Need help with an eHome Infrared Transceiver / S3 mode

I bought my wife a new HP computer. It came with an IR receiver and I believe an MCE-compatible remote (it has that big green MS button in the center ;)). She's won't be using this option, so I thought I could see what I can accomplish on my PVR. However, I didn't want to set it up outright on the server, so I figured I'd set it up on my own personal PC.

After getting it installed, here's what it looks like in Device Manager:
    Computer
     |
     --Human Interface Devices
     |  |
     |  -HID-compliant consumer control device (1)
     |  -HID-compliant device                  (1)
     |  -HID-compliant device                  (1)
     |  -HID-compliant device                  (1)
     |  -Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver  (3)
     |  -USB Human Interface Device            (3)
     |
     --Keyboards
     |  |
     |  -Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard            (2)
     |  -Microsoft eHome MCIR Keyboard                (2)
     |  -Microsoft eHome Remote Control Keyboard keys (2)
     |
     --Universal Serial Bus Controllers
     |  |
     |  -eHome Infrared Receiver (3)
    Notes:
#1 = cannot select turn off this device/Bring out of standby not selected
#2 = cannot select turn off this device/Bring out of standby IS selected
#3 = no Power Management tab

My main purpose of using this device is to be able bring my HTPC out of S3 mode.

However, on my machine (WinXP SP2), when I put the computer into standby, it's not fully S3, it's either in S1 or S2 as the machine's fans are still running.  I have a feeling it's because I cannot set the "Turn off this device" in the Power Management tab.

Any help in completing this option would be greatly appreciated!

You could check to see if usb keyboard and mouse are enabled in the bios. I will tell you though, I have never had great luck with sleep in vista. ie: if it does wake up at all, and hopefully quickly, I have had odd problems with screen resolution, color quality, and sound problems. These issues require a restart to fix. I leave my pc on all the time, it never goes to sleep. Microsoft could do alot to save the environment, if they could fix the sleep problems in vista.

You need to check in your motherboards bios to see if it supports s3 and if it does enable it. You'll also want to enable wake on usb for the remote to be able to wake the pc.

If you still have problems after making these changes, then it's most likely one of the components in the system which is stopping the machine from entering standby correctly. The only way to find out which component is causing the problem is to slowly disconnect each one until you can correctly enter standby.

Re: Need help with an eHome Infrared Transceiver / S3 mode

You are correct... I haven't checked the BIOS on my personal PC for S3 mode, though it is 5 years old, so I'm not sure what options are available, since I didn't pre-plan using S3 mode for my PC, thought I did for the HTPC, so everything is set on that computer.

It is definitely the USB IR receiver as that is the only device I've added recently and now my PC will not enter S3. If I remove the receiver, the PC does enter S3.

As stated in my OP, all the devices that were added by the unit either do not have a Power Management tab or the option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device" is disabled (ie, it's grayed out and can not be selected).

I'll check later today in the BIOS to see what options I have available.

Re: Need help with an eHome Infrared Transceiver / S3 mode

Strange that it's the receiver, I've got 3 of the stock MCE ones and they all put the machines into and out of S3 without any problems and a couple of the machines are a few years old.
I should also add that I haven't had to change any power management options for them either (haven't looked to see if I actually can), but when you think about it (at least when I do!) you don't want to turn it off as how would it then turn the pc back on?
