I recently noticed when watching Late Night with Conan O’Brien using MCE 2005, that I was missing the edges of the screen.

 

It is very noticeable.  On the Standard Definition NBC channel, you can clearly see that 2-3 inches on both sides of the picture is missing.  Often, text displayed on the screen is cut off.  Even the “TV-14” logo is partially cut off.

 

However, the High Definition NBC channel displays the show correctly.

 

Late Night with Conan O’Brien is filmed and broadcast in widescreen format.  My question is:  Does NBC not correct this on the Standard Definition full-screen channel?

Have you tried hitting the info button, choosing 'zoom' and making sure it's set to 1 or 4 for widescreen?

Yeah, I've tried all 4 MCE zoom modes.

My question is more of a General TV question, rather than MCE-specific; since the sides of the picture are cut off when watching the Standard Definition NBC channel live through just my TV, but the HD NBC channel is right.

It just seems to me, that NBC would adjust a widescreen format show for broadcast on the Standard Definition channel, so parts of the picture aren't missing?

It seems to me that somthing is not set correctly. are you using a set top box? or using a tuner in your pc? If your using a set top box, it may have the wrong aspect set.
