    growing sound lag. Please hellp!

whenever I watch TV the audio and video are in sync but grow apart with the sound falling behind.  After half hour it is noticible and an hour real bad.  I have the latest drivers for everything.  I have tried ffdshow, ac3, spdiffer.  I have optical out to my Samsung HTIB for surround sound.  Any help please.  DVD in WinDVD plays flawless.  .avi files have the same growing lag problem.  Also once the lag is there it stays until reset.  Even if I close MC and open .avi with Media Player.

audio/video sync issues are almost always a codec problem (unless the original encode was poorly done)

    Tikker:

I agree, I just don't know what codec to use and with what setting.  Like I have said I tried FFDshow and AC3 which are the 2 main codec's.  Plus there should not be an issue with audio with MCE and live TV.  I have never had this problem before.  There needs to be a setting adjustment for the use of optical out to my receiver that I am missing.

use gspot to make sure you have the right codecs installed

Re: growing sound lag. Please hellp!

I have GSpot not sure I am doing it correctly but a recorded TV show is showing up as a DVR-ms.  CODEC status is yellow and says undetermined.  At the bottom is says render OK the following combination of filters were used.  Then only ffdshow audio decoder default directsound device.  Odd that is doesn't mention ffdshow video.
When I play an .avi file I get CODECs are installed and both audio and video ffdshow is listed.  Also there is a lot more information throughout the screen with recorded just the top and bottom panels.
I will continue to play with settings.  I will also work on getting permissions to add a file so I can show a screen shot.  I don't know how to check a live TV show with Gspot though.

I got a program called "vista mediacenter decoder utility"  which is telling me that I am using "Microsoft MPEG-2 Video Decoder"  and "Microsoft MPEG-1/DD Audio Decoder"  I am supposed to be able to change the codecs to what I want, but they are to only options.

Re: growing sound lag. Please hellp!

here is an update to my problem.  please help anybody

Any sound that my PC processes has a growing lagging problem. This includes Itunes, Media Player, Media Player Classic, Media Center and mixcraft audio editing software.

The sound starts out OK, but as time increases so does the lag. Fast forwarding jumping ahead or moving around in a file with audio makes the problem worse. The ONLY solution I have been able to find is to mute the SYSTEM volume. I notice that the sound will play for a bit depending on how far behind it is and then stop. After a quick mute things are OK. If I am watching a football game I will have to do it every half hour or so ( i have learned to live with it). If I am watching a recorded show and fast forward commercials I have to do it every other commercial break. Itunes lags after a song or two.

I do not have HD cable TV, just a cable box into the TV card

It almost seems to me as the sound card cannot process fast enough to keep up, but I am not sure. IF it is the sound card can anyone recommend a good sound card. Something that has 5.1 support and is not $200

I have FFShow and tried "reccomended" setting, but I don't know what most of it means. I don't want to use pass through either. I want the computer to process 5.1 and receiver to distribute to the speakers (or am I wrong on this)

Any help would be much appreciated. It is becoming a real head scratcher.

My computer is AMD dual core - GeForce 7600 - 3 GB Ram - Hauppauge hvr-1600 on board Realtek HD 5.1 sound Optical sound to Samsung HTIB receiver

Do you still have this problem? Because I had the same problem and I know the solution now.

go to --> my computer --> properties --> hardware tab --> device manager --> IDE ATA/ATAPI or something like that--> and there go to te primair and secundaire driver properties --> advanced tab--> and look if it is set to pio or dma? the first one should be set to "dma if availble" write down if it says PIO beneath it or DMA ULTRA

This only applies for IDE not SATA drives I think.

Re: growing sound lag. Please hellp!

That doesn't matter, if your DMA driver is using PIO your computer gets real slow, mp3 files even encounter lag problems.
