    Video Library Thumbnails

When I browse into a Video Library folder with Divx files VMC crashes.  I have tried using the Divx, ffdshow and xvid codecs - all with the same result.

Is there any fix for this?  Apparently the problem may be related to generating thumbnails.  Is there any way to manually create thumbnails for a files - the way that you manually create a folder.jpg file?

Shutting off thumbnails is not something I want to do but how do I do this if that is the last resort?

man, it seems like i've seen this same topic posted more recently than ever before...y'all need to be more careful with the movies you download :-)

the thumbnail file is ehthumbs.db, but deleting it probably won't fix it. Start moving them to subfolders in groups & you'll rule out which one is causing the issue. It's a manual process but it works

    Re: Video Library Thumbnails

In my case it is not downloaded movies - it is children's TV shows recorded on a TiVo, MCE or BeyondTV, and then converted using AutoGK to, I believe, xvid.  It doesn't appear to be one or two files - it is the whole lot of them.

Could there be something in my setup that is making this problem worse.

But I have never had the slightest problem with these files in the past.  I have had them for years, some are at least 3 years old, on multiple PCs running different versions of XP Media Player and they work fine.  It is just in Vista that I have problems.

I suffer from the same problem. VMC will crash to desktop soon after I click on my movie directory through Pictures & Videos. ARe there any techs around that can help us with this nagging issue?

    Re: Video Library Thumbnails

guys, i know it's frustrating, but follow my instructions. It's the only way i've seen. The problem is it's probably just 1 of those thumbnails which is causing issues. The only way i've found is to separate them into subfolders, until you can rule out the bad one. it sux, i know.

    Re: Video Library Thumbnails

I do have mine in folders - for example under Videos I have Dora, Wiggles, Barney, etc.  And whenever I go into any of those folders VMC crashes.  So it doesn't appear to be any one file - it seems to be pretty much every avi file.  These folders are all in the Video shared files section of my WHS but I don't know why that will make a difference.  I will try removing that folder from the watched list and just move stuff to a local folder one at a time.

    Re: Video Library Thumbnails

if neither of you guys have ANY movies in the root Video folder (the one where it's crashing), then it sounds like you have a much more serious issue, which unfrotuantely i've not seen nor sure how to fix. I'd start with moving all those files to a completely new folder. monitor that, and see if MCE plays fine iwth it.

Try renaming the files. I had that problem and solved it this way.

No, my files are in the \\winhomeserver\videos\kidsshows\ folder.  The crashing generally occurs when I open up the folders containing the videos through the Video Library browser but I believe I have seen crashes occurring when I open up a folder that only contains folders.  But this may be due to thumbnails being used to create a picture for the folder icon in VMC.

    Re: Video Library Thumbnails

I have Divx videos on WHS and they play fine from WHS to Vista, I will see if I duplicate it (try to make it crash when playing Divx) that should be fun :)
Also I will find out exactly what codec I am using on Vista (I think its ffdshow) for Divx videos, and I will get the version number, there more than one FFDshow codec.

    Re: Video Library Thumbnails

It is the DivX Codec that causes this problem.

Make sure FFDSHOW is set to use Libavcodec for DivX and Xvid files.

How do you do this?  I don't see this option under configuration for ffdshow.  Right now the check marks are selected for xvid, divx3, divx4, divx5 and mp43 from the codecs page of ffdshow configuration.  fyi - under About it says libavcodec version 0.4.6 build 4614 Jun 17, 2002

    Re: Video Library Thumbnails

Hmm.... I will hae to try this out. My event logs say i got a -109 error when the problem occurs. Hopefully it was just a codec.

Well I'am using DivX codec Version 6.7.0 only,  no other codce installed (excepted the Vista dvd decoder) *.AVI files play fine.
