Vista x64 Windows Media PLAYER plays all videos... Vista x64 Media CENTER refuses to play same videos

Hello all.... first time poster here... seems like a great place.  I hope you guys can help me figure this one out...

I'm trying to get Vista MC to play videos that are shared through my wireless network.  I just formatted and installed Vista Ultimate x64 last night... I've downloaded all updates and all my drivers are installed.  All my hardware works... and works well (new PC build yesterday).  I then downloaded and installed "K-Lite Mega Codec Pak" (this allows me to play RealMedia and QuickTime files with Windows Media Player as well as tons of other AVI codecs).  I have installed this codec pak in XP MCE and Vista 32bit MC previously and have not had any issues.

I can load and play all my shared videos through Windows Media Player without fail.... even the RealMedia and QuickTime files.  BUT... when I load Vista Media Center, any video I try to play I'm told that Media Center "can't find codec" and refuses to run the video.  This happens will all videos but WMV.

I know the codecs work since Media Player is running just fine... but Media Center doesn't?  I thought that MC uses WMP as it's player so why would one work while the other doesn't?

Since this has worked in both XP MCE and Vista 32bit MC I'm assuming two things. 1) either Vista x64 does something different with MC... or 2) Vista MC is messed up and I should reformat and try again.

Thanks for any help in this...

    TK.

You need to also install the k-Lite x64 codec pack. This includes the 64bit version of ffdshow which is required for MCE integration.

Not a fan of k-Lite but for my x64 experience, it works best -- better than vista codec pack.

    Thanks for the reply....

I'll track down and install the K-Lite x64 pack as well then and report back.

So should I install K-Lite Mega and then K-Lite x64?

If I don't get answer for this next question here, I'll make a new thread...

I'm also having one other issue... this has happened in both 32bit and 64bit Vista through Media Center...

While a video is playing it will pause (both audio and video)... this is random and can happen about 3-7 times during a 30min clip.  After 30secs to 1min later, the video will fast forward to the point where the clip should be had it not paused.... the video then goes into slow motion waiting for the audio to catch up.  For the audio after the pause, the audio will pickup where it left off and play at normal speed.  Once both video and audio catch up to each other the clip will play normally again until the next random pause.

This only happens when I'm using Media Center... if I simply use Media Player or other video players to play the same videos... they play without a pause or any interuption.

Is media center running a bad cache system or trying to load or run things in the back ground that's causing these issues?  This is happening on fresh installs of Vista... before I switch to x64, my 32bit VistaMC did this in the first day.... and then never stopped for the last 4 months before I switched to x64... but I've now seen the issue in x64 as well.

    Here's my PC setup:

    Asus P5N32-E SLI

    2GB DDR2 800Mhz Corsair 5-5-5-12

    Dual Core Intel e2140

    GeForce 7300GT PCI-E

    400GB IDE Seagate HDD

XPMCE 2005 never had this issue... and that was built on an older computer hardware... I then installed Vista 32bit and it started having that issue... I then built the new hardware computer above yesterday thinking it would fix the issue... but it has not done so.  This problem happens with any video format (mpg, avi,rm,qt,divx, etc, etc).  The same network and cards have been used between XP & Vista installs.  I've also tried every wireless channel... and even tried wired network access and this has had no effect.

    Thanks again,
    TK.

The order for Klite doesn't matter but I've found that installing 64bit last will give you the best experience. sometimes, 32-bit applications overwrite critical settings thus rendering the system unstable.

For the stuttering, i would post under the hardware section of codecs is not an issue. It shouldnt stutter like what said. The only item I see is the Cosair settings/timing you have. That seems quite unusual.

BTW, the 400GB IDE, maybe the bottleneck. Run perform and see what the stats are. I suspect your Disk I/O is all bottlenecked.

Question I have is since you have 2GB RAM, why go 64-bit? You cannot take advantage 64-bit unless you exceed 4GB RAM.

Re: Vista x64 Windows Media PLAYER plays all videos... Vista x64 Media CENTER refuses to play same videos

    Well... I'm getting closer.

I reformatted and installed the KL Mega and KL x64 codec pak.  From what I can tell so far all my normal videos play through VMC... 50-75% of my quicktime (.mov) files play... not sure what's wrong with the others...

and I still can't get any RealMedia (.rm) videos to play... although the error has changed from "can't find codec" to "can't find file".... huh.  Trust me when I say the files are there, they are shared and they work just fine if I load up WMP and play them outside of VMC.

    Any thoughts on that one?

Thanks again for all ideas and tips so far,

    TK.

Did you install the x64 version of Real Alternative? I'm not sure if k-lite has that in their codec pack. check their website. Other than that, I have no idea. I dont play back rm files so i'm grasping at straws. sorry.
