MCE Remote and / or Extender for PDA and Smartphones

    Hello together,

at the moment I'm searching after a piece of software that allows me to control the music playback on my MCE. I also want this thing to have a shiny simple GUI that shows me the cover of the actual played song.

I tried Niveus which does not support WM 2005 and could have a better interface

I also tried pad one which is in my opinion overfeatured and only useable with a pen and a microscope - that's not want I expect from a remote control. In addition it's performance compared to the other candidates was also poor

Next one was slling clicker - I think they did a great job in integrating that many mobiles but why only ITunes - transfer this to MCE and you have one.

Netremote was also a candidate which didn't succed through lack of MCE integration - starting one song via your MCE box and one over netremote will end up in playing both songs. Also the skin could be improved.

All other tested tools a not worth a word. That doesn't mean that I have seen all - mabe I missed the best solution. Any feedback in that direction is more than welcome.

So far from the remote side - and extender feature for watching TV and Videos on the PDA would be a nice feature too but I'm wondering if that won't make the piece of software too complex for the "normal" user I want to adress.

At the moment I'm also wondering if an remote control via webbrowser wouldn't be the best approach. Xlobby does this for example. This would bring the advantage that all tools are supported.

So again any information in that topic is more than welcome. Thanks to everyone in advance!

Sounds intresting could you explain this more detailed?

Correct me if I'm wrong but you will get no feedback on your mobile with this configuration right?

sony Ericsson have a pc based app that allows you to create custom HID profiles for their phones. Using it you can assign pc hey strokes and combinations of keystrokes to the phone buttons. A nice graphic of the phones keypad appears on the phone screen when using it. you can modify the picture using any editor like paint so that instead of
    1 2 3
    4 5 6
    7 8 9
    * 0 #

    you can have
    open close play
    skip play skip
    .. ... ... etc.

You can even map the more generic keys of the d pad and volume controls on the phone.

yes there's no feed back but its still a nice neat small app.

Yes Niveus does and you can buy it. Unfortunateley they do not support Windows Mobile 5.0. Altough Niveus comes quite near to the requirements - in terms of usability and perfomance it does not convince me 100%. Another issue is that it is only easy usable for WLAN connections for Bluetooth it will overextend most users. For me its no problem to set up the connection but my wife for example won't manage this. I saw a few programs that do a great job for connectivity (Salling Clicker) but have other issues like the GUI.

Thanks for your help - Unfortunateley I'm still searching.

Have you tried Rudeo MCE Control ?  I tried the trial version, it seemed to work. Look into it, it might work for you. I'm also in search of such program but something free!

There IS a script available for MCE (XP and Vista) for salling clicker, and it works perfectly, Can be accessed by Wifi and Bluetooth, and a bluetooth access on one networked PC can steer a Media Center PC that is in the same network.

    Salling clicker is available here

The  Media Center script is available here

Salling allows for a complete control of your media center, and even allows simulation of a mousepath with your mobile.
