mcupdate_scheduled, the sleep waker returns!!!
Is there any way to change this schedule? i have searched but obviously with Vista+TVPack this was a massive problem...
Anyway up until a few days ago my PC was fine now it wakes up randomly whenever it wants and doesn't go back to sleep!!
I have disabled everything minus the MC remote but it still happens and viewing the event log shows the dreaded mcupdate_scheduled is to blame.
FFS Microsoft can't you put a setting in to only update when PC is on???? how hard can that be???
I WAS really happy with W7 as Vista would never sleep properly for me (conserve the environment and all that!), but now (having bought the pre-release!) i am mightily miffed!!!
ANY SUGGESTIONS????????
Intel DH55HC, Intel Corei3 540 , 2GB DDR3 1033mhz(skint need more!), Nova-T500, Nova-S2, Skystar HD2 with CI (running motorized dish).

Task Scheduler / Microsoft / Windows / Media Center / mcupdate_scheduled ==> change the trigger to "At log on of any user"

You can also type in a DOS window "powercfg -requests" and find out what's keeping it from going back to sleep. Then work on fixing that problem, which seems to be the real issue.

Shouldn't be greyed out, just edit the trigger, choose at log on, the default is any user. Either way, at least you'll know when it's gonna update :)
Check the rest of the tasks too, there's a bunch of random things that pop off at weird times, I set all the tasks that wake up the PC (except mcupdate) to 1am on thursdays. Haven't had any troubles with it yet.

Re: mcupdate_scheduled, the sleep waker returns!!!
Hi,
I've created a replacement MCUpdate solution (for Win7) that provides an S3 sleep option. It's a cmd file and a task sched xml.
The cmd file runs stock mcupdate.exe with the default args, waits till it completes, then runs some code to initiate suspend mode. The task sched xml creates a new task named MCUpdate that is configured to wake up 2AM. This works well for me and always results in the PC re-entering S3 sleep mode after mcupdate.exe finishes.
Its part of MCI-Kit, a free Media Center Integration Kit that I put together. The new version has just been released at sinderon.com
Hope this provides some relief for the fail-to-resleep problem :)
Regards,

Re: mcupdate_scheduled, the sleep waker returns!!!
I think the REAL question here is why can't Microsoft sort this out? a standard user is not going to want to faff about with all this stuff, hell i can hardly be @rsed myself.....

No argument on that point.
It's entirely possible that this is on their radar of things to fix, but at what priority I don't know. Based on the lack of progress in solving it over the past 2 or 3 years though, I've come to the conclusion that it is either low priority or so complex that its in "complete rewrite" territory. At this point I'm not sure what else can be done to get Microsoft's attention on this. There have been many posts detailing the issues, and even some spot attempts by MS to look into specific cases, but there is not yet a general solution to the problem.
Hoping...

Re: mcupdate_scheduled, the sleep waker returns!!!
from tasks->settings->general->automatic download options
you can either
- uncheck automatic downloads (and thus turn off mcupdate from ever running automatically - you'll have to manually trigger a download)
- set up a window of time (has to be a minimum of 6 hours) that mcupdate will honor and only perform the download in (and thus wake up the machine).
I would suggest the latter option.

Hi Mike,
The problem is that the PC fails to return to sleep mode after being automatically awakened by mcupdate.
I think the desire is to maintain the automatic download feature and control over the download times, but to have a reliable mechanism for returning the PC to sleep after mcupdate completes.

Re: mcupdate_scheduled, the sleep waker returns!!!
will the PC go back to sleep though if you set up the time slot? as you've seen before this seems to be the problem. If it woke up updated and went back to sleep i wouldn't give a r@ts @rse....
could you elaborate a bit on the tasks bit too? is that in scheduler?i'm on my Vista laptop at the mo. searched tasks brought me up system 32, not sure thats where i need to be.
I'll check the Mediacenter when i get home....
Cheers for the pm offer btw!

Mike - The problem is PC fails to reenter sleep mode after mcupdate task wakes it up and then completes its work. I believe that users would want to retain automatic updates and control over the update time window, just add in reliable return-to-sleep and the sun will rise again :)
Also sorry if this is a duplicate post, the first one is stuck in Moderator Approval void.

Unchecking automatic download does not stop the mcupdate_scheduled task that wakes the machine

Weird, my PC has been going back to sleep perfectly 99% of the time.

Re: mcupdate_scheduled, the sleep waker returns!!!
I just unchecked the "Wake this computer to run this task" box in Task Scheduler for the mcupdate_scheduled task. No more waking up in the middle of the night.
