I really like Dish's Turbo HD plan. You don't get 100's of channels that you will never watch, just the major HD channels, for something like $25 a month. Now that is reasonable!

Dish has always had a good channel lineup at a good price. If this becomes a reality, I'll be on-board, too. I'm thinking that three receivers and my HDHomeRun combo will have me nicely covered. This would chop tons of money off my cable bill and have a lot better service. I can't even get Sci-Fi HD from TWC!

If this became a reality and one could actually record HDTV broadcasts, will be have the same restrictions that currently exist with ATI Digital tuners:

    1. Media Center will record the programs over Ethernet, but will they still be in the protected .wtv file format?

    2. If so, then it is still not possible to play these on another Media Center; only on Extenders.

    3. Since we are waiting on a driver update from ATI to reduce the the harshness of this limitation, how does this whole thing play in DISH land?

Agreed,  Unless BEV implements the same functionality on their 6141 which is just a rebranded VIP-211k.

    Here's hoping BEV comes through!

Good luck...with the transition to NAGRA 3 it looks like Dish/Bev hacking is coming to an end.  Unless someone cracks the new encryption, it might be a while.

Does anyone know if there is another source reporting on this other than engadget?  I'm hoping to see some sort of formal announcement somewhere else to confirm that this isn't vaporware.  I'm planning to pull the trigger on the vip 922 when it comes out, but would like to know ahead of time if Draco support is something that will be available via firmware update, or if it will require a different tuner.

If I were you I would wait.  Based on what happened with DirecTV it might be worth waiting until an official announcement.   It's my assumption that one of the few beta testers that is testing the Draco projected leaked some info to EngadgetHD.  Beta testers tend to go to Engadget to leak the info to make sure they protect their identity.

I'll probably hold off for awhile anyway.  I want to make sure the 922 has any bugs it may have worked out, and I want to at least hear an official announcement before I switch to Dish.  I am, however, pretty soured by Directv's decision to dump the HDPC-20, so I'm itching to cancel service whether it's an improvement or just a lateral move.

Hey Dan, I was thinking about grey market, not black market, i.e., subscribing to Dishnet with a US based address and brining the box down.  Still paying your monthly fees, etc.

I've been a DirecTV customer since 1991. I have always touted their customer service, and I am a fiercely loyal consumer.

That being said, I would drop it like a bad habit if Dish has a Non-OEM Media Center tuner.

From what Scott at Satellite guys was saying, it's not so much a tuner as an add-on for an existing tuner that would sit between your HTPC and your Dish set top box. He said he saw it at CES, but was vague about anymore details.

Yes!  I'm  a Dish customer that was going to switch to Direct when the hdpc20 came out but since that isn't happening ....  This is very good news!

Does anyone know if there is a beta program that current Dish customers can participate in?

I am going to throw my theory in the mix here. I think the HDHomerun is going to act as the tuner for Dish STB's streaming over ethernet.

Yea... if this enables me to record HBO on my HTPC... even with broadcast flags... I'm definately going to poison my neighbor's trees.
