That's weird. Did I miss out on an update? Because I still have that option.

You still may have the KB946648 update installed on your PC.

If the Check Box “Allow instant messages within Media Center” is unchecked you are ok, but if you click and check the box you will get the error message.

Richard, I don't have that selection available"Allow instant messages within Media Center"  I only have the ones below that on the pix you posted. What should I do to get this selection?

Richard, How do I get there to do that and do I need to reinstall after that or what?

Sorry, I'm not up to speed as many of you all.

    THANKS for your attention

I see what's happening. I reinstalled windows tonight (new hardware) and got the error. Previously, I set up media center before installing SP3, unchecking the messenger deal before SP3. Tonight, I installed SP3 first and get that error. Will follow your instructions :D.

    I tried to follow your instructions to no avail.  BUT, I did stumble onto another way!!!  OK,  This is what I did;

    1. "start"  2. "control panel"  3. "add or remove programs"  and remove the windows messenger program  4. Then selected "add/remove windows components", uncheck "windows messenger" and select "OK"  5.  Then select "set program access & defaults".  You will see that "custom" is selected.  select "non-microsoft", then re-select "custom" and select "OK" (If you don't do #5 as stated, the window will just close).  6. Then scroll down to "default instant messaging program" and uncheck "enable access to this program".  The "use my current instant messaging program" was selected when I scrolled down vs. "windows messenger".  Not sure what you will see, or if it matters.  Select "OK" and walla!

CAUTION:  Not Sure If This Will Adversely Affect Other Programs.

    Good luck,

Just google "KB946648". There's a single download from microsoft that will pop up.

    dondjohnson,

Once you uninstall KB946648 in Add/remove programs (you have to click the 'show updates' box -see pic) you can then uncheck the box in MC's 'Setting' > 'Messenger and Caller ID' (see pic) and the error will stop displaying.

Then you can re-add KB946648 by re-running microsoft update and it should give it to you in the list of reccomended updates or you can go straight to the KB946648 page here (XP) or here (XP x 64).

Thanks to Richard Miller for figuring this out. :)

Another possible work around. There was something in the KB946648 about registry change.I am not in front of a XP MCE PC now so I cannot test this, if anyone wants to try it to see if works, I think ehshell.exe may work (not 100% sure). Edit Too Add it dose work.

    KB946648 @ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946648

     [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\ehshell.exe]"AllowMessengerExecHandleFailure"=dword:00000001

Re: messenger failed, windows messenger not installed

Will any of this affect using the xbox360 as a media extender?  Around the same time I started getting this error my 360 stopped being able to connect to my XP Media center.  Anyone else have this happen?  Might just be a seperate issue...

How does one uninstall KB946648?  I've tried pretty much everthing on this thread except that, but I'm not sure where the option is to uninstall that update.

I've uninsalled Windows Messenger, that didn't work.

    I've uninstalled SP3, that didn't work.

I did try to install an open source recording software package (found in Wikipedia), and my TV tuner card isn't supported.   LOL.  I thought that'd be a workaround since MCE doesn't work anymore.  Use something else!

Go to “Add and Remove Programs” in the Control Panel, click on the option box to “Show updates” and remove the KB946648 update
