    Re: Linksys DMA2100 - Hands on Mini-Review

    Hey guys,

I know this is quite an old thread but i just had a quick query about the DMA2100 and wondered if anyone who already had one could let me know. I already have a DMA2200 that i use in my bedroom and i want to get a DMA2100 for use in my office (i don't need a DVD player in there). Obviously they have just discontinued them, but i have found the DMA2200 to be very effective so, whilst it's not ideal, i don't mind that too much. I stream everything to my DMA2200 via cables, however i will have to use wifi to go to my office as i don't have enough cables running there already. My concern is this site: DMA2100 says

"DMA2100...also features two antennas to the DMA2200's three. As a result some users have reported a significant decrease in wireless quality with the DMA2100 vs the DMA2200"

This worries me as if the wireless isn't strong enough then it's useless to me and i may as well just buy a DMA2200 and not use the DVD player. Could anybody (ideally with both a DMA2100 and a DMA2200) confirm whether this is actually true or not, and whether (if i'm going to use wireless) they think i'd be better just buying a DMA2200 instead?

Thanks so much for your help guys, it's very much appreciated,

    Jezz

You may have a lot of trouble finding a 2100 in stock.  Most places I've looked don't have them, so you may be forced to buy the 2200 whether you want to or not.  If you are doing HDTV, chances are, the wireless won't work reliably.  Very few people get wifi and HDTV working even with N and the 2200's 3 antennas.  If you can't run Ethernet, you can try a powerline network setup.  I say this mostly because I recommend that people have a backup plan to run wired if/when they determine that wireless won't work for them.  Either that or get your extender from a place with a good return policy.

Netgear's MOCA kit works like a charm. Sorry I didn't read the first post to see if this for US/UK/etc.

Hi! I have a Linksys DMA2100 Media Center Extender, and i try to watch the TV with one Freecom DVB-T USB digital tuner, but the Media Extender did not displayed the broadcast. It shows an error message: Video Can not be displayed, the format used for this video is not supported this media center extender.... On my PC its work fine. Could you please help me, and find a solution?

Does DVB-T use H264 video, and are you using Windows 7?  If so, the 2100 doesn't support H264 video in the WTV container.  Xbox 360 is the only extender that does.

I use the DMA2100 and a Dlink DIR-655 router (wireless N).  The DMA works well providing the content is StandardDef.  HD works well if it is encoded to MPEG2.  H.264 does not seem to work well.
