With PP2 you do not need any hacks to play Recorded TV from WHS to MCE.

Correct no need for this hack :)

    Hi,

I used the registry hack to be able to record directly Live TV to my WHS PP2. The main advantage of this is having DVRMSToolbox installed in WHS with Filewatcher, converting the shows to iPod format automatically after they are recorded. It all works fine except for the fact that ever since I changed the RecordPath on the registry to my Recorded TV share, my Media Center PC does not enter sleep mode anymore, which leaves the PC turned on after recording the show. Putting back the RecordPath to a local folder solves the sleep problem. It seem VMC keeps a network file open when the RecordPath is on WHS, which prevents the PC from going to sleep.

One alternative I've looked at was some scripts to schedule the files to be moved to WHS using a simple move command, but this doesn't cope well with Filewatcher on the WHS, which picks up the file and converts but misses the context information. It seems it starts to convert even before the file has finished copying. I've changed the setting for FileWatcher to wait copying for 10 minutes but still doesn't bring consistent results.

Has anyone managed to get Live TV Recording directly on WHS while keeping the Media Center ability to sleep after recording the show?

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: WHS Power Pack 2?

I'm having probs recording directly to WHS PP2.  I have 3 VMCs that each do recordings currently and I did the registry hack, adding my server's Recorded TV folder to each of their "RecordPath"s.  I can get in to watch a show live, but when I hit stop, the screen freezes and I have to force shut down Media Center.  I can watch recorded shows without problems.  Is there anything else, beyond the RecordPath hack, that I need to do to make this work seemlessly?

Due to wife and kids, I'm reluctant to leave this if it's not bullet-proof.  Therefore, if there's nothing beyond what I've done to get it to work, is there a way to record locally and batch move each computer's shows at night(or better yet... to move the show immediately after it has been recorded locally)?  (I can't believe this wouldn't be in PP2, as it's main job is backing up but recorded TV backup isnt even allowed!)  I know of the TV manager and Recorded TV Manager applications, but I think they are each built for Pre-PP2, so I have been afraid to try them.

    Thanks for the help!

Actually, Recorded TV Manager can do this for you.  And Rick recently added limited WTV file handling so it will copy those files as well.  If you are only using RTVM to copy the files up to the server, I seriously doubt there would be any conflicts with PP2.

Thanks WScottCross.  I downloaded the local Recorded TV Manager 3 to my VMC and tried to get it to move the recordings to the WHS, but am not able to get it to work.  I have sent an email to rick asking for help.  Something to do with configuring an account to have permission to move files across the network in the service, that just isnt taking for me.  Don't know what I'm doing wrong, since it seems very straight forward.  Hopefully Rick will have some insight.

In order for that to work, you need Recorded TV Manager for WHS installed also. That part is not free, but I think it's worth it.  Once he gets the full functionality for WTV files, it's a no brainer for me.  The duplicate file handling alone is worth it for me.

    Hi!
I use Windows Media Center on Windows 7 and as Server a Windows 2008 Server.

I did everything exactly as you describe it here.

The scripts run without error and the network drive T: is mapped correctly by the script. The respective folder on the server is shared for everybody and anonymous.

However, Windows Media Center still cannot record on the network drive.

    Can anyone help futher?

I've been trying to find the answer to how to record to a server and came across this.  This talks about how to record to WHS, but I don't use WHS.  I'm just using a PC with Vista as a server.  Can I do these same things on the Vista server as talked about to WHS or is WHS completely different?

Re: Playing recorded tv or recording live tv to WHS.

I tried doing some of this tonight with my Vista server and my son's Vista PC.  I tried adapting the registry hacks listed on Page 1 for Vista and everything seems to match up with WHS.  But when I try recording on his PC, I get a message that says "Recording failed to start."  Any ideas?
