Problems with Windows Media center DRM after install of Windows 7 Please help

I have posted the following before.

I am a former broadcast engineer. Recently I ordered up digital cable with a cable card from Time Warner Cable. Since Time Warner Cable(TWC) uses switched digital video and cable card technology, I needed a switched digital video adapter (received a Cisco STA1520) and a cable card for my ATI Digital cable tuner (ATI DCT). I first attempted to install under Windows Vista and had all sorts of problems. Interestingly people at TWC told me that their tech support only handles Windows 7 as they said that Windows 7 was a lot easier to set up and worked right. So I upgraded to Windows 7. Interestingly after following all of the prompts for setting up the ATI DCT with cable card and making sure the cable card was permissioned properly (verified by two TWC technical representatives physically) the problem is not a TWC issue under Windows 7. I am having the same problems under Windows 7 that I had under Windows Vista with a few seconds of video then no sound and sometimes no picture. Microsoft technical support has on several occasions tried to help with vista and could not resolve the issues by remote connection. I AM NOW BEYOND THE HELP THAT THE STANDARD TECHNICAL SUPPORT PERSONNEL CAN DEAL WITH!!!!!

I need answers as I have RTFM'd everywhere I could and am not getting any resolution to the problems. I wish I was a billion dollar corporate chief technical officer as I might have better luck getting resolution to my problems. Verifying my hardware I do not have failing hardware. I am beyond frustration on this issue. Maybe if I were Bill Gates I might be able to get quick resolution but my bugs that I am experiencing are serious and need resolution by someone who can crawl through the software and fix the software on the fly if needed. I am willing to work with whoever has the resources to deal directly with this problem. NO MORE STANDARD TECH SUPPORT PLEASE!!!!!

This is not a signal issue as signal has been tested by TWC at the ATI DCT and found to be fine and in addition to this I have another TV and cable tuner that works fine elsewhere in the house. The ATI DCT works fine in analog mode. This means no problems with the tuner. Two different cable cards have been tried with the exact same results. IS ANYONE QUALIFIED TO HELP!!!!?????

Firmware in the DCT is 1.19. One of the microsoft support call center personnel tried to revert the firmware to 1.17 and then claimed I had a broken DCT. I removed the DCT from the device manager then reinstalled to reupdate the firmware to 1.19. Apparently the person on the other end of the line did not understand that you DO NOT REVERT FIRMWARE!!!!!

I am currently talking to one of the regional experts within Time Warner about this issue and he and I have determined I have followed all of their guidlines/troubleshooting routines including correct connection of the equipment in question. Pairing has been done several times with different cards. Both the DCT and the SDV adapter are plugged into the computer via USB with the SDV adapter between the Time Warner signal and the DCT plugged into the computer. I see ~5 sec. of video and audio then the picture stops. According to both myself and the Time Warner rep this is indicative of a permissioning issue within the software itself. This occurs both with a tuned analog channel or a digital channel without fail with the cable card. Without the cable card and the DCT set up for analog only channels the tuner works fine. However the questions you have asked though are the typical ones I have already dealt with here with Time Warner. This includes the observation of a Time Warner field tech who checked through all I did and determined that all was hooked up correctly.

I sent the following to the Time Warner representative I am working with in the following email.

The issues bluntly deal with DRM and Windows Media Center. Following the traces in the webpage for the ATI Digital Cable Tuner (ATI DCT), I was able to determine that the video for most of the stations is going into protect mode not allowing me to view the video. I started trying to work this out in Windows Vista but I am seeing the same issues under Windows 7. The Microsoft case # is 1121509833. Since this issue is consistent between both Windows 7 and Windows Vista, the issue is with Media Center directly and DRM.

I have already been able to verify with the Time Warner technicians the following results.

1. All equipment is hooked up correctly.

2. Signal levels at all tuners/adaptors are at the correct levels.

3. Cable cards are permissioned properly.

4. Setup was followed as prescribed by Microsoft.

With Microsoft techs they made the following mistakes/assumptions/standard scripted corrections in Vista

1. The knowledge base article at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=891664 was followed both by me and Microsoft support without success.

2. Attempted reversion of video drivers was attempted.

3. Attempted reversion of firmware on the DCT was attempted. Here the Microsoft phone support said I had broken hardware at this point (funny...NOT!!!). However the tuner works fine when reverted back to version 1.19 of the tuner firmware. At this point I can watch channels not DRM protected.

4. Checked to see all drivers were up to date which they are now at this point.

5. Advised to upgrade to Windows 7 (Done with same problems as in Vista just slightly different error messages about not being able to update playready)

6. Tried sfc /scannow to fix system.

I am now currently running Windows 7 with the following hardware configuration in the attached file called system report.txt. (which I would be willing to include.

I have also since seen in the last 3 days since the Windows 7 upgrade, 1 Blue screen of death, At least 3 instances of Windows Media center locking up, 2 shutdowns that had to be forced, 3 crashes with automatic reboots immediately. Are you sure Windows 7 was ready to be released? (I have since started working on some timing issues with installed memory)

And I have followed the following with no resolution.

1. Deinstall and reinstall of Playready as described.

Windows 7 is more then ready for production, it's rock solid in every sitiuation I've used it. That said I never do OS upgrades. And Windows 7 is required for SDV support, Vista does not support the SDV adapters.

The first thing I would try is to uninstall and re-install PlayReady, this is the DRM software Media Center uses. If that still doesn't help and given the fact that you're seeing crashes in Windows 7 I would do a clean Windows 7 install.

2. Attempted update of DRM.

I have tried to RTFM about DRM and have gone nowhere.
I get the following error in Windows Vista Media center when I try to update the digital tuner setup.

The upgrade of your security components was incomplete. You will not be able to watch or recored premium or high definition contents until the upgrade is successful.

I have tried deleting the DRM folder and following instructions on this link.

Please follow these methods.

Method 1

I would suggest you to check if the system clock is correct.

Method 2

1.       Try to disable the firewall and check if the issue still persists.
Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clicking Windows Firewall.

2.       Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3.       Click On (recommended), and then click OK.

Method 3

I would suggest creating a new user account and testing under the new account if you still get the error. If you don’t get the error, there is likely a file/setting in your old one that is causing the conflict and you will need to copy over your files to the new account. If the error does still exist, you may need to perform an in-place upgrade, or a reinstall.

1.       Click the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety, and then clicking User Accounts.

2.       Click Manage another account. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3.         Click Create a new account.

4.       Type the name you want to give the user account, click an account type, and then click Create Account.

Time was successfully syncronized with time.windows.com and this does not solve the problems.

Windows Firewall was totally disabled and this does not fix the problem

Creating a new user account does not solve the problem.

An in place upgrade for me is not an option. I have the original Vista RTM disk and cannot back out service pack 1 or service pack 2.

A clean reinstall from scratch is not an option at this point.

You may try this for Windows Vista:

First you need to close the system tray icon of the application that is using DRM or even Windows Media Player.

1. Open Computer icon
2. Click on Organize
3. Click on Search and Folder Options
4. Click on Show Hidden Files and folder and uncheck the box right beside the "Hide Protected Operating System Files"
5. Click on Apply and then Ok buttons
6. Double click local disk C:
7. Click on Program data Folder
8. Click on Microsoft Folder
9. Click on Windows folder
10. Open DRM folder and delete everything including Cache.
10. Open Internet Explorer (and this will only work using IE)
11. type this on the address bar http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite and it will prompt you to install Active X or Run Add-ons before clicking the Upgrade button.
12. Next will be http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/crlupdate/en/crlupdate.html and again there will be Upgrade button before clicking on it please do install the Active x that will be located on top of the page as pop-up blocker.

Now try playing or downloading movies that is using security component for you to download protected files such as movies or songs.... Hope this may help you a lot...

I have tried to RTFM and have had no luck. I need help. With Windows 7 I am still seeing issues I SHOULD NOT SEE!!!!!! The software in Windows 7 says that I am compliant. RTFM on hardware installed says I am compliant. Why will the software not work!!!!

Media Center has lost its remote connection to Windows Media Player and must restart

I am running Windows 7 64 Bit media center. Had been working flawlessly and suddently I get an error saying that Windows Media Center has lost its remote connection to Windows Media Player and must restart. When I click ok, it shuts Media Center down and when I restart it works. This message doesn't seem to come with any regularity, sometimes it takes a few days, other times it happens every 30 minutes. I have not made any recent hardware changes, nor have I added any software. Where would I start looking at how to fix this problem?

How to Re-Order channels

Hello - I use Win 7 Media Centre to watch DVB-T channels. I have created my own favourite channels list. Now somehow in the process I seem to have re-assigned channels #s to each channel. What I would like to do is re-order my channels list but for the channels to keep their original #. For example if I put BBC News as my fifth channel in the list I still want it to keep the channel # 80 rather than it be changed to 5. How can I do that?

BTW - is there a plugin that allows to record DVB-T streams in a different format than wtv?

I was almost ready to pull the plug on TIVO with my nice new HTPC. However, I have moved backwards with MCE in one area. I can no longer watch recorded TV on the other Win7 PCs on my LAN. DRM gets in the way and will not let me playback the programs on other PCs using Media Center. I get the error:

Copying Prohibited

The broadcaster prohibits this content from being copied. You can only play this content on the same which it was recorded.

TIVO allows you to do this but you have to have a application on each PC to view the files on the TIVO device. I expect MPlayer or MCE to be my application to view protected WTV files from anywhere on the LAN in a TIVO-like way.

I have Win7 Ultimate x64 running on the HTPC and all the other PCs in the house. I really need a way to watch recorded TV an any MCE PC in the house without buying additional Extender hardware. Extender haedware would be a waste since I have some powerful hardware and great displays in the PCs.

Two questions:

Is there a way to do this that I'm just missing?

If this can be done via Extenders, why can't one MCE act as MCX for another?

Here's what I'm seeing in the Event Viewer...

Media Center Extender Setup failed as the Extender was detected on the network but the UPnP search for the Extender failed (timed out after 20000ms).

Any thoughts? I've disabled the firewall in Windows 7 to see if that might be the issue, but still not connecting.

My understanding is that you can only get HD channels either via over-the-air, or via the cable company using a digital cable box. Well if you're running your cable line into a TV Tuner card in the computer, how can you pick up the HD channels, or even say HBO if you subscribe to such a thing?

I'm trying to play my tv through the tuner using a HDMI cable that connects to my RCA 40" HDTV and to the tuner itself.
But when I plug it in and run the Catalyst Media Center, my tv isn't recognized, help me please. I tried setting it up as digital antenna,
but its not working. Any suggestions?

restricted content message

Seems like this is the only channel that is an issue so far and I did a search on "restricted content" and didn't turn up anything recent. Trying to figure out how to deal with this problem. Comcast says No CableCard for PC?

I was talking to a higher up Comcast rep and I was trying to find out pricing for a CableCard so I could use in my new Windows 7 MCE for when the Ceton CableCard tuner comes out. He told me I that it would not work in a PC. I tried to explain to him in case he didn't know how it was done and he said he knows all about the upcoming release of the Ceton CableCard tuner and he said that Comcast cable cards will not work and that they would not allow a CableCard in a PC, only a TV. Will a CableCard from Comcast work with the new Ceton CableCard tuner and can they deny me the CableCard because it is going into a PC? The Comcast rep went as far as saying there installer will just leave and not install the CableCard and they will not allow me to install it myself. I have the Comcast rep's name, number, and his direct extension so I can call him back if needed to get more information why he says Comcast will not offer this to me if needed. Any help or thoughts would be great.

I would like to report a serious bug affecting Cablecard PCs running Vista Media Center. It may be confined to Verizon Fios users. There are (to my knowledge) two threads here currently discussing this issue:

When watching content on HD channels, there is a significant judder/frame loss. On most channels I would estimate 20-30% of frames are dropped, resulting in jerky motion. The problem (al least for me) is actually most severe on NBC-HD, where I would estimate 50% frame loss and severe pixilation in addition, even when SD content is being broadcast on the HD channel.

The problem seems to affect people with both ATI and nVidia cards, different video driver releases, and both Vista x32 and x64.

I am in a somewhat unique position, because I have both a working and a non-working instance of Vista running on the same hardware. My PC (an HP m9000t) experienced this problem with it’s factory Vista install when delivered about a year ago. Largely because TV was so unwatchable, I did a clean install of Vista x32. By tinkering with TV Setup (more fully described in the first thread above, which also has some other useful info about driver quirks and bugs that may bear on this issue) I was able to eliminate the judder and have a perfect picture in both HD and SD. Recently, I did a clean install of Vista x64 + TV Pack 2008 onto a separate hard drive, and that install experiences this issue. I have checked all settings in VMC, Display Properties, and the nVidia Control Panel applet, and I have made all the settings on the x64 system the same as those on the working x32 system, but the problem remains. I am happy to help troubleshoot and correct this bug in any way I can. I am hooping that you might be able to compare configuration and registry data from my three installations, to see what sets the working clean x32 install apart from the other two. If you want any files or video showing the jerkiness, please let me know.

xbox connected to windows media center that came with computer

xbox Windows xp hp pavilion media center came installed on computer (Computer about five years old) have xbox hooked up to router with ethernet cord. see the network can type in code fine, but cannot see the media center error! think maybe the fire wall i have norton 360. Dont know what to do!

But if we hook up the xbox to the router and play it to lcd (tv 6 months old)! which is about in other room with fourteen thousand feet of cord it works fine!

Microsoft Mediaroom and Media Center

I live in western Canada and one of the nation's largest telco's, Telus, just recently launched Mediaroom as the backend for their IPTV service. I believe it is version 1.6. I will be switching from my regular cable service because the features look great and the cost is about the same.

I am wondering if anyone has information about how long or difficult the transition to Mediaroom 2.0 is. I have been waiting for years to use my Media Center PC and Xbox 360s to handle live HDTV and allow me to use them as my primary PVR. Obviously Telus has not mentioned anything about Media Center and Xbox 360 compatibility but I assume if they eventually upgrade to 2.0 that these feature will be available.

CableCard will never be an option for cable and satellite subscribers in Canada so it seems that Mediaroom will be the only option to get premium HDTV content into Media Center without a cable box.

Recording the buffer

How come recording the buffer has not been addressed? There has been discussion for 5 yrs now, but MS has not addressed this. I was watching the Super Bowl today and then decided I wanted to record it. Ooops!!! I hit the record button and lost the first quarter!!! Lots of questions on how to handle this but just inaction. I'd rather see something than nothing. I had Dish Network for years, not sure exactly how it worked, but at a minimum it recorded all the show I was currently watching. I will accept a pop up box to ask me, but give me option of a default action to be applied.

Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly.

I have been reading up on previous posts similar to this one and did the same steps to fix this error. I started off by uninstalling and re-installing my tuner followed by updating my graphics card driver. I still get the following message:

"Video Error Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer."

Just to make sure it wasn't my drivers I tried watching the high def channels on winTV 7 and it worked well. I run out of the HDMI port although I wouldn't think that would make a difference. I really hope someone can help. Below are my computer specs:

Missing Tiles in W7 x64 Media Center (Netflix, Internet TV...)

Hi, I know there is a thread on issues relating to Netflix, but really, it's not helping - people having trouble getting this to work on Vista, Win7, a so many problems with this... ..

Anyways, I have wasted about 12 hours of my lifetime trying to get this to work, and honestly, I think it's just a question of getting lucky or not. Microsoft, do you SEE how many people have trouble getting the NETFLIX tile to show up? Look at your answers site and you'll find out - or look at the Netflix plugin page, 50% or more cannot get it to work.

I have tried EVERYTHING: changing my location, resetting the registry, uninstalling WMC, reinstalling it, reinstalling Win7pro x64, you name it. Hitting the ominous UPDATE NOW button in WMC, whatever you want. Even the command line update would simply not work.

Here's a question: why do you not simply offer an installer for WMC and let people choose what tiles they want to see??? Why do I have to get lucky to make it work? Hoe come there is no DOWNLOAD?

Media Center stopped updating listings.

After working fine for several months, "update listings" stopped working for me on January 20th. I'm running Media Center on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Based on the logs, it never failed before that date, and never worked after.

As far as I can tell from the logs, the only change to the computer that day was a 3:00 AM scheduled update to SilverLight: 1/20/2010 3:00:38 AM Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB979202)

I've read through the postings and tried pretty much all the suggestions I could find, with no change. The mxf file downloads OK, but won't load. What I’ve tried (that didn’t work):

Choosing “get latest guide listings”.
Re-running “set up TV signal”.
Updating as admin.
Running mcupdate.exe from the command line.
Running loadmxf from the command line – only get invalid character or data messages.
Deleting unused channels.
Deleting old recordings to free up disk space.
System restore to 1/19/2010 - before the problem started
Deleted contents of eHome\Packages\EpgListings (can’t find prefs or tracehelper folders).
Changing permissions of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys (lots of access denied messages on the subkeys – even running as administrator). Same results when I tried to turn off “read only” attribute.
Removing the Silverlight update, and then removing Silverlight altogether.
Disabling one of my tuners (I have dual-tuner Hauppauge).
Changing my region (from USA to Canada) or my zip code (from 20002 to 22209).

The results are always the same: Errors during the last update.

Has to be a better way to change recording priority

So I have about 90 items listed in my "Series" list, though of course that's not all series, that list includes movies I want MC to record the next time it's shown, but the problem is if I add a new TV show it's dumpped at the bottom and it's forever using the dumbest method ever invented to move the priority around by clicking the up arrow. Has anyone come up with a way where I can go to a new show, click on it, and set it to be number 17 or something like that? MS's method is fine for those with 5 things they record, but when you get to dozens (I've been at well over 100 at times) it really stinks. Thanks...

Hi All,

Let me see if I can describe my question. I have several hard drives connected to my HP MCE 2005 system. Of course, as items are deleted and re-recorded I shift the drive that will be currently recorded on. So, stuff is scattered across all my drives. I was just wondering if there was a way within MCE to tell which hard drive an item (program) is recorded on. I have not seen a way. I didn't know if there might be a utility that would allow this. I have searched and could not come up with anything.

I do know that I can go into each drive with Windows Explorer or Dos Prompt and view the files(programs) that are recorded on each specific disc. But was just looking for a way to do it from MCE at the same time I can retrieve other info about the program.

Any ideas?

Hello !

I have a question for someone at MS :

Why is the WTV file format such a secret ?

I would LOVE to convert all my media to the new Media Center format, but i cannot find any documentation on how to create my own WTV file.

I know that you will not implement such features as external subtitle file support, but at least provide us a way to do this ourselves with some documentation about how it is handled in MC. - or provide us with a tool that can create WTV files.

Can I use X-Box as CD/DVD player to stream back the audio

My plan is to have WMC-7 pc and 7 channel amplifier on a remote location and xbox in living room.

If I use X-box as extender next to TV Then am I able to play (stream) audio (not video or both) back to wmc pc to play on home theater speakers through 7ch amplifier located on same remote location? Can I integrate X-Box and wmc so I just control everything through wmc?

I have a cat5e and HDMI cable between TV and that remote location (closet) which the router is there too. Also there is a conduit between these two location so I can add additional cable if I have too.
