I have the same STB (Motorola DCT-6412) and I am running XP Home on my Laptop. I do not know why YourMomma said that this could not be done. Playing recorded material from the DVR WILL output over firewire. I guess that Comcast is not 5C compliant.
To get it working get the following files (readily available from many websites)
1) meistb.inf
2) meistrm.sys
3) meistb.sys
4) mstapeo.sys
When attaching, use the firewire port on the right (that is if you are looking at the back of the unit), do not use the one on the left.
Attach your laptop to your STB with your firewire cable, It will pick up a new device, and you will be questioned first to set up an "unknown device", cancel this. Then it will pick up another new device, with this one, select to find your own driver, and point it towards where the 4 files mentioned above have been downloaded. The next new device, do the same, pointing towards the 4 files.
Next, look in your Device Manager, in the Other devices tab, there should be an "Unknown device", disable this. Next, if you look in the Imaging tab, there should be two entry's one saying "Motorola AV/C Panel Device (DCT-6412)" and one saying "Motorola Tuner AV/C Device (DCT-6412)"
As long as these are okay, your XP Home now recognizes and can use the STB.
If you want to record, just use CapDVHS (also readily available on many websites).
Start your DVR Recording off the STB box and CapDVHS will record your program.
Really, really Easy...
