RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

I have both M4a files and Mp3 files in my Itune library, but only MP3 in my WMP library. I have added a registry hack to recognize m4a files in WMP.

My question is Do I need to scan the entire disk (120Mb) in WMP to pick up the m4a files? Will WMP duplicate the entries for the MP3 files already there? How does your app identify the m4a files in WMP so it can write the itunes info to them? File name? This is going to be a very long process (probably it will run for several days) for me so I thought I would seek your guidance before proceeding.

    Thank you

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

    Hello James,

thanks again for musicbridge! When I wrote earlier that I could not convert my mp4 files with your new version, it was (obviously) due to my own fault. I had to use the system backup functionality earlier and forgot to reinstall the directshow filter which is nescessary for media player zo recognize mp4 files. So mp could not locate the files, hence musicbridge was not able to convert the tags... Maybe you should add some note about the directshow filters within the documentation (or maybe it is possible to check for correct filters from within musicbridge?). One other thing that could be missleading to users: When one selects "all data" as sync option, the covers are not included but have to be run seperatly...

Anyway, by now my MCE is working perfectly fine, thanks to you. I therefore would like to show (atleast some symbolic) support by sending you 10 US-$ via paypal - if that is ok for you please pm me the email adr. for paypal.

Right now I am still working with backup music files, since you stated in the disclaimer
"Music Bridge will make changes to your media libraries and meta tags in files. Be sure to make backups of all files and libraries before using this application.". It would be nice to use it on my "original" library - I am only converting from iTunes (which I am using for organzing etc.) to MC (only playback). What metatags are beeing modified within the music files exactly?

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

Great Job with the applcation! Seems to be working great.

One question (or clarification) that I have.

I am going to adding M4a files to my WMP library and I already have 80 gb of mp3 in my WMP library. I don't want to update the tags for these mp3 files that I already have in WMP> I am going to be adding about 50GB of M4a files. I probably will add these a chunk at a time over several days. All of these files (mp3 and m4a - 130GB) are already in iTunes.  I would like to update the m4a files that I add to WMP based on the creation date of the files in WMP. In other words, I would like the application to look at the creation date of the m4a files based on an input parameter in WMP (or range might even be better) and then go to iTunes and get the appropriate info and from the file add it to the entry in WMP library.

    Is this feature feasible?

Thanks for your worked in creating this great application!

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

I'm happy everything is working for you.

Regarding the note abouut directshow filter, I do mention that I use 3ivx to enable WMP10 to recognize and play AAC files. I could probably write a longer description about getting everything setup now things seem stable.

In the readme it does describe what is included in the sync "all" option. Having the cover sync seperate is just personally convenient...

I would have to go and check the API's to see what exactly gets modified in the file. It is something roughly like this:

Syncing to iTunes: Pretty much everything except ratings get set in the file itself (hence the iTunes rating export/import)

Syncing to WMP: For AAC files nothing will be updated to the file itself. For MP3 files, most fields will be updated in the file itself (I believe)

Basically if you are confident in your data, you can go ahead and make the changes (I do), if you have a backup you can always go back.

Thank you for your generous offer of a donation, but it is really not needed. I wrote MusicBridge to deal with my own sync issues and figured it might be useful for others. I'm happy it works for you.

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

I'm happy to hear that MusicBridge is helpful to you.

Regarding your question about WMP modified date. Sounds like you want a "Destination Added" date criteria. I think that should be possible, but I'll have to take a look at the code tomorrow.

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

The import cover doesnt work for me. I dragged a cover for 112 image from amazon into itunes and all the files have the image in itunes now. i run MB and go throught the log and it says it added artwork for a particular song. i went into WMP10 and MCE and no artwork. i tried 3 different albums and nothing.

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

Can you verify that a file called folder.jpg exists in the folder that the particular music file is in.

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

OK, I think I might have found a problem:

I found one folder that in addition to my folder.jpg file had the following files:

    AlbumArt_{DF01450A-F849-4BF5-AA33-758C16B39176}_Large.jpg
    AlbumArt_{DF01450A-F849-4BF5-AA33-758C16B39176}_Small.jpg

When I deleted these files, the folder.jpg showed up instead of the "unknown" cover icon.

You could probably do a search across your library and delete any files beginning with AlbumArt and you may find that your imported album art shows up.

I am going to investigate further and may have to add some delete functionality into the cover import function of MusicBridge.

I should be able to add the destination create date criteria function. It's on the list.

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

Ok, my post about the AlbumArt_{DF01450A-F849-4BF5-AA33-758C16B39176}_Large.jpg files seemed to be a bit of a red herring. The only instances I found of this being a problem is when specifically the AlbumArt_{DF01450A-F849-4BF5-AA33-758C16B39176}_Large.jp exists in the folder, but does not actually match the ID of any of the music files in that folder. That would mean something weird happened in the past.

As for the fact that you could not find folder.jpg files at all, that is very strange... Is it perhaps on a network share and MusicBridge doesn't have permission to write a file to that location? We need to figure out why no folder.jpg file is being written.

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

I'm traveling during the week, so I can't try this yet, but I just wanted to thank you in advance. I've been looking for a way to sync my itunes and WMP ratings for a while. It would actually be more useful if I could set this up to be compleletely automatic.
Like the machine that has the itunes library could publish the xml file out to a network drive that the mce machine could grab and read in periodically.

Either way, this should be quite helpful.

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

Ok so i'm confused now!! so i transferred the art from wmp to itunes and they all showed up in itunes. so there were a few that i had to get from amazon. so i go to mce and no art again then my amazon art starts popping in. there also still is no folder.jpg in the itunes folders. am i looking for these right...start > search > file or folder > folder.jpg or album then nothing pops up for either.

RE: Application to help sync your WMP and iTunes libraries

You may not find them, with a search as they may be considered "system files". You either need to set the search to include hidden files, or you need to set your folder view options to show hidden/system files. Then you can right-click on a track in WMP and choose "open containing folder".

I'm guessing the files are there.

If you transferred FROM WMP to iTunes using MusicBridge that means that at least at the time you did that the folder.jpg files existed, that is what I use. Did you possibly remove and readd all your music to WMP? I'm wondering if you left behind a bunch of those special WMP albumArt_ files that are now detached and blocking the viewing of the folder.jpg, these files are also considered system files.

Let me know what you find.
