Re: RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I have another variation of this problem!

I can put my system into standby (S3, fans off and all) with the remote, no problem. I can start up my system from standby with the remote, no problem. BUT when I schedule a recording, put my system to standby and it starts up on it's own there is a black screen and I cannot access the system. If I touch the connected (only for this purpose!) ps/2 mouse or keyboard, the screen "awakes".

So it's like I can resume from standby, but I need to be able to "invoke" the screen with my remote....

    Any ideas?

Just Press the OK and then Home button on your remote.  You should see Media center welcome screen.  Remember that you don't need the Frontend of MCE to record a show, it runs as a service.  I think It was made on purpose since you don't want the screen to turn on when you recoed a show in the middle of the nigh ;)

Imon software is really buggy.  I have issue with them.  They are leaking like crazt, they take more and more ressource till it reach 100% of CPU.  I have to kill VFD.exe to bring my system back to normal.  I send few post on Imon web site but never got any replies.  That's maybe it's the reason why it won't sleep, in my case imon software is the problem!

Re: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

After a little work and frustration, I got this working. 1st bug I ran into was a black screen on resume, or a really distorted one. The fix was to run a Nivida card hack from MCE standby tool and all was well. Consequently, this app also takes the regedit and some other legwork (e.g. power management configuration) out of the equation. Just the same, I applied it after following this tutorial, to eliminate the signal problem I was having on resume wtih my LCD TV.

The problem I'm experiencing now is that directed packet over NIC causes the PC to immediately start back up after S3 standy. At first, I thought this was due to DHCP server lease negotiation so I assigned static and took PC out of lease range. Still, no go... same exact problem. With directed packet turned off, and magic on, all is well.. But then I lose ability to turn PC back on without magic packet.

    Any ideas or similar experiences?

Re: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I have a very similar, if not the same problem...  I'm actually trying to build an XP/MCE NAS/server based on an Intel DG965WH motherboard with the Intel onboard Gigabit ethernet controller.  I'm not interested in using magic packet WOL, but I am interested in the system waking from S3 when an attempt is made to access one of its shares - so that's the Directed Packet.  The system is set to go to standby after 5 minutes of inactivity...

Although I can get the system to wake quite happily from S3 on accessing one of its shares, at the most I can only seem to manage about 30 seconds of sleep, usually much less, before it pops awake again.  If I disconnect the network cable it sleeps fine, reconnect it and it wakes up (regardless of whether there are any other systems active on the system with a share open).  I'm in a constant wake/sleep/wake/sleep cycle, with sleep being anything between 1 and 30 seconds.

I guess either something is trying to access the PC legitimately based on its IP/MAC address whilst its asleep and the issue needs to be stemmed there (I can assume only my router, as it happens with nothing else on the LAN?), its waking on just "general" network activity or for some other reason.

Not even sure how to look into this...  I've tried with a packet sniffer attached to a different PC on the network, but I'm not really sure what I'm doing here; it doesn't throw anything up with either the problematic machine's IP address (which is fixed) or MAC address at the point it sleeps/wakes, but I'm not convinced I'm seeing all the network activity...

I've two other threads open here and here, but as yet without reply...

Oh dear...this doesn't bode too well, and from 2003 too.

Is anyone using an Intel onboard ethernet adapter or standalone NIC successfully with wake on directed packets?

Re: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

Well...as a follow up to anyone searching and finding this, I switched from my current router (a Buffalo WYR-G54) back to my old router (a KCorp Lifestyle Gold KLG-575) and all is well.  The server sleeps as it should do and only wakes when it's either pinged or an attempt is made to access one of its (previously active) shares.  You need to use IP addresses when mapping drives/shares from it, as it won't resolve its name when in standby, but it does seem to work exactly as it should.

My best guess is that the Buffalo attempts to access the sleeping sever machine by IP address when it shouldn't be (ping or otherwise).  I've not confirmed this with any packet sniffing tools as Ethereral/MS Network Monitor certainly aren't showing all my network activity when running on a different PC on the network e.g. they don't show pings I deliberately make by myself from the router to the server, which is the sort of thing I would need to see to investigate.  I guess this is probably not too surprising, although I'm not sure what you can do to network all your router's activity?

My old KCorp router is fine, in fact it's a better all round router, but the wireless is knackered and hence that's why I got the Buffalo as a cheap replacement.  For a brief moment I thought I could use the Buffalo connected to the KCorp but just as a wireless switch (DHCP switched off, cable from KCorp router to one of the Buffalo's LAN ports).  This works, but even in this mode the Buffalo must still be pinging out some crud onto the network directed at the server as the server starts waking up when it shouldn't do.

I now have the predicament of finding a router with good wireless but that doesn't interfere with Wake on Directed Packet on the server's ethernet adapter...  I guess folk don't much use this specific ability of NIC's/onboard adapters, but if anyone has any working recommendations for a decent wireless router that's fine with this I'd be interested.

Re: RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

Just adding my case which is a variant of this:

Had resume time from S3 state of 110 sec with black screen in the meantime on a Asus board A7N8X-X  with XP Pro SP2 . But resume was ok always.

Tested a lot and searched without result until I found post 53038 in this forum.

Also used dumppo and bootvis with no help.

Solution: uninstall selectively Nvidia ide driver and let windows install its standard ide driver . In my case it used the same ATA modes so no problem. Nvidia driver was NForce2 ATA controller (V2.6)  v.5.10.2600.446

Now I have a resume time of a few seconds !  wonderful !

    Thanks to this forum.

    A7N8X Deluxe S3 Standby Issues

PC does enter S3 Standby; however, all fans still spin (case & heatsink) and I can’t bring out of standby.  I have tried to bring out of standby using the keyboard by pressing every single key while plugged into PS/2 port with an adapter and also plugged into a USB port.  I have tried to bring out of standby using the mouse while only plugged into PS/2 port.

Both mouse and keyboard are wireless.  While in standby, I can see the cradle receiver responding to the keyboard and mouse when hitting connect button.  Cradle connects to computer via PS/2 port for mouse and USB port for keyboard.  I have a PS/2 adapter for the keyboard.  I don’t know what the deal is.  I feel like I have hit a wall.  Please help.  All settings and troubleshooting processes listed below.

    PSU: True430 ATX12V (provides max 2A on +5VSB lead)
Keyboard: Logitech LX 700/MX 3000 Keyboard
    Mouse: Logitech Cordless Click! Plus

    2. USB Device Wake-up (2x3 pin USBPWR12, 34, 56): all three set to 2-3 (+5VSB)

Windows XP Pro, SP2 5.1.2600 Settings:
    1. Display Properties>Screen Saver>Power>Power Options>Hibernate: not enabled
2a. (with keyboard plugged into PS/2 Keyboard port with adapter) Computer Management>Device Manager>Keyboards>Logitech PS/2 Keyboard>Properties>no power management tab present
2b. (with keyboard plugged into USB port) Computer Management>Device Manager>Keyboards>Logitech HID-Compliant Keyboard>Properties>Power Management>Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby is checked

    3. Computer Management>Device Manager>Mice and other pointing devices>Logitech-compatible Mouse PS/2>Properties>no power management tab present

    Troubleshooting:
    1. I have read through many threads on the ASUS website.  I have installed the S3USB.reg registry entry from http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/utils/S3USB.zip.  The only other thread in the ASUS Forum pertaining to my mobo was http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20071027001939078&board_id=1&model=A7N8X+Deluxe&page=1&SLanguage=en-us.
    2. Followed procedures outlined in Microsoft KB 841858 at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841858/en-us.
    3. Tried the procedures outlined in the first post on page three on PC Perspective at http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=190313&page=3.

    4. Tried the procedures outlined in the first post on page one on The Green Button at http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/1/29899/ShowThread.aspx.
