System response after the clip ends is non-existent. It takes about a minute to recover (just freezes on last frame or thereabouts).

P4 2.8 GHz HT, 512 MB RAM.

The purpose of rendering to MPEG-1 is to save time over rendering to MPEG-2 which is the final goal. However I rough edit my vacation videos to something quick so I can review them, take notes and trim/fade/etc, for final cut then I would use MPEG-2. So, if some other output format is also quick to render and compatible with XP MCE, let me know, I'll try it!

btw I use Sony Vegas 7.0 for video editing/rendering.

That's not enough ram for much of anything and it may be your video card, too.

I'll see what doubling the RAM does and oh by the way, I shoulda mentioned that my viewing is actually done on an HP x5400 extender.

Er, ummm, finally, I should mention that skip and fast fwd/rew don't work and usually lock the extender up.

Is there something I should be doing specifically in the MPEG_1 encoding settings or is it just hopeless?

The fundamental question here is not whether the system is slow - sure it's an old beater! But, I am just wondering why when viewing these videos, that there is no control over what they are doing. I presume that some aspect of the DVR-MS format enables the fast searching, etc. and it's not so much a matter of MPEG-1, it's just that it's not DVR-MS. However I see that people use Xvid and WMV, do those formats suffer the same limitations as raw MPEG or not?
