My MCE box doesn't play DVD's, well is does but only the sound and a black screen. I can play the DVD through WinDVD 7 directly and play DVD's via MyDVD's from my network. Any ideas?

You need an MCE compatible decoder. Run this utility to see what you have.

Thanks for the quick response. I have the decheck app already and have the windvd 7 decoder which is mce and wmp10 compatible.

Just so I understand you, you can play DVDs in Media Center from a network HDD but not from the DVD drive, is that correct?

That's correct. I don't have any problems with ripped DVD's or playing via winDVD 7 interface.

This is a weird problem.

 

Are the ripped DVDs in a VIDEO_TS folder with VOBs?

What video card and drivers do you have?

Is the DVD drive enable for DMA mode?

Do you see a black screen when playing the DVD from the DVD drive with Media Center in window mode?

Well I managed to solve it, but not sure how. I had a major stint at trying to sort my troubled mce box. I removed the graphics card and used thebuilt in one as I no longer needed s-video. I also did a few updates to the bios and some bios tweaks and it now works. I think the graphics card for the culprit.
