    Shopping for an extender

I'm a VMC user and I want to start shopping for an extender. I think I understand most of the limitations on file formats etc. and I'm ready to move forward. I have a few questions though that I'm hoping this community can help with.

    1) In your opinion, which is the best v2 extender? I have ethernet at each of my TVs so I don't really care about which has the best wireless functionality.
    2) On a couple websites (newegg, amazon) the DMA2200 mentions 1080i upscaling on the DVD player but the actual Linksys page says 1080p. Which is correct?
    3) I understand that .vob and .iso dvds will not play over any extender. I have my dvd collection transcoded to .mp4 format and I use MyMovies as the plugin to access them. As long as I've gotten the file format correct, should I be able to access them through the MyMovies interface on the extender?
    4) Do all the extenders allow for audio through HDMI or do I need to buy an optical audio cable as well?

    Thanks for the input!

    Re: Shopping for an extender

    1. DMA2100 is the best bang for the buck.........Circuitcity is selling them for 150 now

    2. I can confirm that DMA2100 outputs 1080p just fine over HDMI.

    3. never tried playing a mp4 file........so, sorry!

4, DMA 2100 works through all options just fine.

    • HDMI audio works
    • digital audio output over coax works (not sure but I think it has both coax and toslink)
    • Above two are switchable.
    • simultaneous analog output works too.

Great, thanks for confirming #2 and 4 and for your opinion in #1. As for #3, I know I can mess around and get the format right eventually, what I'm really asking is can the MyMovies interface be navigated on the extender?

    Thanks!

Yes, my movies is fully functional, with the exception of playing Blu Ray on the extenders.  They'll show up in My Movies, but will not launch.

The interface is smoother on the Xbox360 but the 2100/2200 works well. I have a 2200 and a 360. Biggest down side to the 2100/2200 is no 4th zoom. Dell has the 2100 on sale right now for $127.49. Just picked one up for our loft.

Yeah, I had decided on the 2200 and saw Dell had it for $169.99. I went to buy it this morning and the price has gone back up. It looks like NewEgg is the cheapest I can find it now for $199. That's what I get for trying to be so analytical!

    Re: Shopping for an extender

I have an HP x280n and I love it. I have it hooked to my 37in Vizio using HDMI in my bedroom and it works great. It is connected to my wireless network and I haven't had any problems with signal drops. I decided to go with it because of the nice clean look (very small and no antennas). The remote is awsome... Much better than what comes with the Linksys models. It also has the HP media connect interface just as a secondary option. The price is kinda steep but I don't regret buying it at all.

Try eBay. I think you can get them on there for about $180 shipped...maybe less.

    Re: Shopping for an extender

MP4's work on the DMA 2100 extender using MyMovies, OML, Video Browser etc.  The only thing I have noticed is a delay in playback, but theis may be due to Transcode 360.  In my case, I started using DVR-MS video formats as playback is instant and FF/RW also work.  For MP4's, I was using Nero Recode with 5.1 audio.
