Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

It looks like this has been covered somewhat in other threads, although I never found an answer and/or fix to the issue.

I have a Vista Media PC, my content (music are pictures) are on my "server" (a separate XP box on the network).  Obviously I can see that content when I'm logged into the VMC PC as myself by mapping a drive to the content.  However, my Xbox 360 can't see the content on the server.

I tried copying my Media Player database to the Mcx1 profile, but that doesn't work.  Is there any way of doing this, or is this somewhat simple setup not supported?

Any help would be appreciated.   Thank you!

Run a search in the forum for login script.  You will need one so the Xbox can see the shares...

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

    Thanks for you responses...

The "server" is a Windows XP Professional box on the network.  I'm using it as a file server, FTP server, etc...

As for login scripts, I couldn't find anything that worked with Vista.  I will search again, though.  Thank you.

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

What version of vista are you running, as some of them don't work with the login scripts, i should have asked before...

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

I'm running Vista Home Premium.  I think I read somewhere that the login scripts would only work with Ultimate.

It seems silly to copy the 40GB of music to the Media Center PC and waste all that disk space...  let alone have to manage another music library just so I can listen to it in the bedroom.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

I think the solution is very simple unless I completely misundertood the question.

First import the media into your Windows Media Player library. By import, I do not mean copying of the data. Create a playlist of those files on your XP system in your Vista PC.

If you can see the files in your WMP library the next time then you should be able to see them through XBOX.

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

I just went through this headache myself tonight so I know what you're talkin' about :)

There are really 2 ways to do this...

1.) Go about it the kludgy crappy way and use a logon script to map a drive...which only gets you part of the way there. You do this by creating a share on the local machine called netlogon and place a script in there that maps the drive with ahe appropriate credentials. You then go to the user properties page and enter the name of the script that you created, e.g. MediaUserLogon.cmd

2.) Create a symbolic link to the share. (this presumes you've granted sufficient share access rights to the Anonymous Logon account)

The first option will basically only get you access, but if you need to do things like use Transcode 360, you'll need the symbolic link since the transcoder pukes if the data is on a network drive (that it knows about). The way around this and to solve ALL problems at once is to create a symbolic link like so:

1.) Open an elevated command prompt and switch to Q:\ (Q is my local data partition...obviously yours will probably differ...)

2.) Run the following command: mklink /D NetworkMedia \\yourunc\path\goes\here

    (quote the path if necessary)

3.) If you're running MyMovies to import DVDs for example, point it to Q:\NetworkMedia rather than the UNC path or your mapped path. When the transcoder hits the link...things work...if you use a simple mapped drive...not so much.

Then again...it's late and my thoughts are probably somewhat incoherent. Thank you Microsoft.

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

So I gave it a try with no luck...

I created a folder in the root of  C called 'netlogon', and shared it out with read/write permissions for all users on the Media Center PC.  I created a script called 'mxc1.bat' with the following in the script:

    net use m: \\server\mp3s /user:username password

I followed the directions for using the commands with powershell.  On the second line for login script I typed in the full path, "c:\netlogon\mcx1.bat".  I assume that's the right thing to do.

But it didn't work.  I was hoping to see an M drive in the Library Setup section on the Xbox 360, but didn't.

If you have any insight, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Morgan

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

Let me see if I've got this right.  You are trying to access your music that is located on your XP machine on your XBOX 360 which is "extending" your Vista machine?  Is that all?  If that's the case you are trying to do it the hard way.  Just share the music folders and add them to your library in Vista.  I use a Quad-core Vista to "extend" all over the house and use an XP machine that pre-dates the Quad as a kind of a home server.  Just share all of your media on the XP and add it all to the library on the Vista and you should be set...Q

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

I tried the symbolic link thing to no avail...  I was able to create the link okay, the extender claims it scanning the folder for new content, but it still won't import any of the music.  I was really hoping this method would work.

ChiWax:  I have all my music already imported into the Media Center library using my login.  However, the login for the xbox 360, "mcx1" is unable to import music from a network drive.

I should go to bed. :)

Re: Xbox 360 + Vista Media Center + Content on Server = HEADACHE!

I did the exact same setup for my bro-in-law..........I dont think I had to do anything special on the HTPC machine to make the content show up on the extender (a DMA2100)

I sure remember that I had to make the admin passwords the same for the XP machine (server) and the VMC (HTPC).
