Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
I have often had to reconnect my xBox to my Media Center but this latest time over this past weekend (ish), after I put in the 8 digit key; my PC poped up a message stating that I could not connect and that I needed to remove an update (not specified) and reinstall the Media Center Manager software. The strange thing here is that my older Linksys MCE is working just fine. I have over 1.5 TB of movies and do not want to lose the linked DRM in the event that I have to uninstall or re-install any software or updates. Any advise would truly be helpful, I thought I would post here first before called xBox.
thx
Marc

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
Thank you JasonT. I had exactly the same problem as marcwilliams. Your fix completely restored my Media Center access on Xbox 360.

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
Jason,
After I posted this, I thought what the hell and called Mixrosoft; they initially sent me to thier xBox division, then onto the XP division then to a divion I can't recall and finally back to the xBox division. No clue or help after 4 hours but did suggest I re-install MCE 2005-that's when I said thx goodbye.
Your fix worked like a champ and I really appreciate it.
thx

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
I don't understand this fix. Does this relate to Extender Not Found issue when trying to link the 360 with the PC? I've searched the Internet for this and found ZERO answers. I've tried this method and it doesn't work. I'm about to take my PC and 360 and smash it to the ground.

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
Jason, I just ran into this problem yesterday. My XPMC has had sp3 installed since 6/20 and was working fine until yesterday. The only changes that took place yesterday were the following updates:
KB954086 Windows defender updated definitions Silverlight(first install) Updated Nvidia drivers
At first the issue was that the 360 would hang on the connecting screen until I powered it off, but every connection attempt resulted in this. So, I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers due to a post in these forums regarding the newest nvidia drivers. I also uninstalled silverlight and kb954086. I then followed the directions that you provided on your blog. After this, I was able to get the extender setup to run, but it would result in a connection error with the 360 near the end, after it had verified the code. The 360 would continue to try to connect for a minute or so before it would produce a can not find media center computer error.
I then uninstalled sp3 and uninstalled, reinstalled mcextender setup, this would run until the point where the mc was creating the profile, but it would error out before the extender profile was created, the 360 did the same as above, fail connection to media center.
I tried system restore, but it is not working, every available date/time listed in the restore option fails to restore.
I did check the system events and found references to both: SystemRoot\System32\RDPDD.dll failed to load as well as items stating the mc extender service was stopped or sent a stop command, something to that effect, I'm not at home so I can't get the exact message, but I can post this later if you need or want other information.
Sorry, the error popped up last night at 9:30 and I was up till 12:30 trying to correct it.

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
This sounds like a common problem with newer versions of the Nvidia drivers. What version of the Nvidia drivers are you running?
I successfully run using 169.21. I believe that someone else posted that you can go as high as 169.40

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
I saw the issue about the drivers after I did the update to the most recent, 175.19. So I uninstalled those drivers and returned to a 98.xx version and then installed 169.21 to get a more recent driver. But now I am at the point where there is not a mc extender profile, and the setup will not advance far enough to create one, so I though this may be related to the kb update for the restricted content issue, but I may be off base.
I'll be on the task of getting it working again in about an hour or so, and I'll be on it all night until I get it working.

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
Time to take a slow step backwards.
- Download the 169.21 release and unpack the files (typically to c:\NVIDIA).
- Using Control Panel/Add & Remove Programs, uninstall Nvidia Drivers and Nvidia Media Center Extensions
- Restart the system allowing Windows to discover your video card and install default drivers.
- When the Found New Hardware dialog comes up, cancel out.
- Go to C:\Nvidia\...\169.21 and run the SETUP.

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
Ok, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers, but there was not a nvidia media center extensions item to uninstall, so I moved on to the reboot and automatic install of the old drivers and then updated to 169.21. I then tried to install the mc xtndr, but it error'd out at the creating new profile and dropped the connection.

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
Yes, I'm fairly certain that the problem is neither of those because the setup actually runs past the point of entering the 8 digit code, where it says connecting to media center extender, the 360 shows the media center connecting screen, the pc then shows creating profile for about 1 second and then it crashes with an error that it can not connect to the extender.
This morning, I removed the nvidia card and installed an ATI card that I was planning on upgrading with, this allowed me to fully remove all of the nvidia drivers. With the ATI card in, I still had the same problem at the same exact point of install/connection.
I also tried to install after removing my antivirus program, no luck there either. I'm baffled. I really don't want to go the route of system recovery, particularly destructive recovery.

Re: Cannot connect my Media Center 2005 to my xBox 360
I did a fresh install of xpmc05 last night and got it working. Whatever the problem was, it is not appearing now, but I have not done all of the windows updates yet, only the mc updates and rollups. I'm only running nvidia driver 93.xx, so I'll update those to the 16x.xx versions that were mentioned, after that, I'll update to sp3 to avoid having to install the 109 high priority updates that were available last night. So, I don't know what the exact cause was, I was hoping to find out so that I can correct it easily if it happens again. Anyways, thanks for the assistance.
