Speaker proximity to HTPC box - is it safe?

    Hi,
I'm thinking of replacing two of the crappy little Sony surround sound cube speakers that came with my Surround Sound Receiver (circa 2001) with some nice floor standing speakers so I can listen to music [I can't stand the bass heavy 5.1 setup].   I'm thinking of getting some mid-range speakers in the $600 - 800 range, but I noticed the pair I want seem to be unsheilded.  I'm buying an LCD TV so I'm not worried about having the speakers near it, but I am worried about my HTPC - specifically the 3x500GB internal drives plus an external 1TB USB drive.

What kind of space should one keep between their speakers and their AV / Computer equipment?

    Thanks!

PS. I'm looking at Klipsch RF-52's... anyone have an opinion on those?

As a general rule of thumb, if the magnet doesn't rip the fillings out of your teeth then it's safe within a couple of inches of your hard drive.

also most people dont realize that there are super strong neodymiun magnets inside of hard drive that drive the acutator arm.  if you happen to have a dead hard drive laying around you are feeling adventurous you can pop that sucker open and pull out a magnet that could hold a newspaper to a refrigerator.  about the only thing that will have enough power to affect a hard drive would be a hard drive degausser.

    exactly

one of the biggest myths out there is that you can't have a hard drive near a speaker

I think that goes back to folks confusing floppy disks with hard drives.
