    extender losing settings

    Hi,

I have a Linksys Extender DMA2200 and about once every couple of weeks it keeps losing it's setting.  So I have to put in the number and rebuild all my info over again.  I think it happens when I reboot the computer and the extender is on.(I leave my extender on all the time)  Has anyone had this problem or knows of a fix.  This didn't happen in MCE2005 with my old extender.

    Re: extender losing settings

This has happened to me numerous times.  I believe every time there is a major Vista update (like SP1) the extender connection will be lost and a reset is needed.

It actually happens a lot, to much in fact.

    Re: extender losing settings

I've only had mine setup a few days and have had this happen 3 or 4 times at least.  I'm on x64 Vista.  I haven't figured out yet what is causing it, but I'm not impressed with the whole extender thing so far.  If I wasn't in IT I probably would have thrown the thing out the window.

    Re: extender losing settings

This was happening to me when I had just one extender.  Now I have three Linksys units and they all have the new firmware and the Vista machine is up-to-date and it doesn't happen at all anymore to any of my extenders.  I leave them all on all of the time but I did that when I was having problems so that's not what is keeping this from happening anymore.  I also reboot with the extenders on but they are not linked via Media Center when I do that.  Try exiting Media Center whenever you are not using it.  You can still keep the thing on.  Mine connects with Media Center in less than 20 seconds.  It does help that I am extending a Quad-Core with 4GB memory and 64-bit OS.  I've learned from years of using Media Center and from my recent experience with the Quad that it's really the only way to go when extending to four extenders(one being a 360).  Good luck, I know how annoying toying around with these things can be when you just want to sit back and enjoy the content.  Q.

    Re: extender losing settings

I have been having this problem since day one with the Linksys extender, including once since the firmware update. It does seem to coincide with Vista updates and/or reboots, but I have not investigated enough to pin it down. Note that I don't lose my settings everytime I reboot the VMC PC....

I am having the same issue.  Very frustrating.

    Re: extender losing settings

I did have this issue fairly often but after various upgrades it seems to have gotten better. It did happen the the day when the extender got hit with a power cut but the VMC stayed on thanks to UPS.

    It is rather annoying.

    Cheers, Tony.

Just a heads up that this issue, or a similar one, is under investigation.  I will let you know our findings once I have more information.

Good to hear it because it is so frustrating once you get everything a certain way and then have to do it over again and again.

    Re: extender losing settings

I am having this problem with my Dlink DSM750 as well.  Very annoying....need to re-enter the setup code and refresh all media each time...

Looking forward to a solution to this....

    Re: extender losing settings

    Mark,

If you are noticing this problem regularly, would you please provide the specific steps you took to reproduce this issue?

    Other questions:

What is the make/model of your device?  Include firmware version if possible.

When doing these steps, does it happen 100% of the time?  If not how often does it happen?

If you are losing the connection between these two devices (we call it affiliation), if it relates to turning the device off and on, how do you shut down the device (e.g. with a remote power button, direct on the device, etc)?  How do you power the device on?

What OS version are you using?  Vista SP1?

How is your device connected to your PC?

    Re: extender losing settings

    KarriLaB:

Yes...I experience this practically daily lately.  I go through the normal setup process, enter the code, then allow the extender to refresh my media files.  All works well until the next time I turn it on.  Sometimes it will go directly to the setup screen, other times with will try to connect to my PC, then say "Cannot connect to PC", then the setup screen appears.

I have a Dlink DSM-750, I don't have the FW version handy, but it is the original firmware that came with the unit (this is my second unit...my first had the security certificate corruption issue, so Dlink replaced it)

This does not happen all the time....lately it has, but I would consider it random.  Sometimes, if I leave the unit off for an extended period, it will work the next time I turn it on.

I never lost the connection.  When I power off, I typically do so via the remote.

    I am using Vista Ultimate 32bit, SP1, 4GB ram

I connect to my PC via ethernet through an Actiontec router provided by Verizon FIOS.

    Hope this helps!

    -Mark
