    Does sorting work?

A relative came over yesterday and had to show her vmcNetflix.   I tried sorting by Stars descending.  I also tried sorting by Year and nothing seemed to change.  Does sorting actually work?  Is there something I need to do other then going in the settings and changing it and saving?

Sorry, I guess more information would have been helpful...=)  Ok to answer your questions, Netflix Player does work in IE7, IE7 however is not my default browser, should it be?  As for the music, are we talking about Netflix Player or vmcNetflix?  It has been some time since I installed the Netflix player so I couldn't say for sure if it had music or not, as for vmcNetflix I don't remember any music.  I am on the Neflix one out plan (8 some odd dollars).  I am trying to use this on my XBox 360 as an extender.  It works perfectly fine on my computer within vmcNetflix.  These topics have been covered, this is true but the thread is almost 80 pages long covering a large variety of versions and the search tool is not all that helpful...=\...I had found some issues similar to mine with suggestions, none of which helped.  Is the troubleshooting guide on the main page or buried in the thread?  If its the troubleshooting portion on the main page, I tried it but to no avail, is there an updated one somewhere?  Thanks for any help you can provide.  Like I said, I just really want this to work because it seems like such a cool plug-in and idea.  Thanks!

Ok, best bet is the troubleshooting that EricL posted in response to you as well.  Yes, IE7 is required to be default.  The music I mentioned was what you hear when vmcNetflix is initializing your movie player in VMC.  Since you can play on your desktop, you should be ok there.  The music may be behind the scenes in current releases, so disregard anyway.  Hopefully the troubleshooting will help.  If not, there is guidance on what to do to log your issues and get additional help.

    Re: Program is still gone!

    affeking:
Well, that's bizarre.  I installed the menu mender program, and its pretty cool.  The weird thing is that it shows vmcNetflix on the internet program menu, but VMC does not.  I tried moving it around and, while it moved according to mender, VMC didn't show it.  I also did the restore and the same results.  It just won't recognize it anymore.  So frustrating.

Anyone have ideas on this?  At this point the only option seems like it may be to reinstall Vista.  What a piece o' junk.

I have seen someting similar.  I am not sure though if mine was related to early builds putting My Movies in the same spot as vmcNetflix.  In any case, way I fixed was complete uninstall of vmcNetflix, restore with Menu Mender, and reinstall of vmcNetflix..  then I menu mended again...  worked for me, but not sure if it is same issue.

I changed the way sorting works, it is now retrieved directly from Netflix in the specific sorted order.  Sorting is currently limited to sorting the Genre categories under Watch Now and Browse DVD.  I may re-implement manual sorting of the other categories if I cannot find a way to retreive the others pre-sorted.

Also, after changing your sort preference you will need to either restart the plugin or switch pages (i.e. Watch Now to Browse DVD) for the sort request to take effect.

Re: vmcNetFlix Beta 1.0.28R1 w/ Vista Extender Support (7/3/2008)

I initially loaded this application about a month ago and had no success in watching on my Xbox extender, so I gave up for a while.  Yesterday I went ahead and tried all of the troubleshooting steps that Eric has listed (clearing cache and resetting extender worked for me) and I'm finally able to "Watch Now" on my Xbox.  Great plugin... this is the kind of stuff that sold me on buying a VMC in the first place...

Great Job and keep it up!!!

Re: vmcNetFlix Beta 1.0.28R1 w/ Vista Extender Support (7/3/2008)

I just found out about this application today (after reading the Netflix stuff from E3), and I've been monkeying with it all day unsuccessfully. I'm currently getting the codec error whenever I try to view a movie with the "Watch Now" option from my Xbox 360 Extender.

I have the latest version from the vmcNetFlix homepage, along with the latest NetFlix viewer from their site. I have been able to successfully watch movies on their website and through the VMC plugin on my Vista PC. I am currently running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I have IE7 32-bit set as my default web browser, and I have the DRM options checked in Windows Media player.

I am able to setup the Extender movie player successfully, and I can see all the titles from Netflix show up on my Xbox. But whenever I try to watch a movie, I get a slowly spinning 'processing' circle, for about 5 seconds, which then changes to a quickly spinning circle for 10 seconds, and then the codec error.

I'm tried every permutation of suggestions listed in this thread so far. I've unintstalled the plugin completely using the instructions from the home page (including the manual deletions), restarted my PC, and reinstalled. I've reset the extender multiple times, cleared the cache, and re-initialized it. I've disabled my Windows firewall completely to make sure the 8081 port wasn't being blocked, and still nothing. I have been able to watch the movies 100% of the time on my PC, and 0% of the time on my Xbox 360. I'm hoping someone in-the-know has a concrete suggestion to follow instead of all this reset/re-initialize black magic.

I'll check log files to see if I can get more info.

P.S. - I would suggest making a configurable option for setting the movie download directory. I'm currently hovering around 1Gb left on my Vista drive, and I don't want to use up more space just for temp movie files. I have a secondary drive for that kind of thing.

I know Eric has posted in this thread before on how to change the default download directory, so I would search around a little and you should be able to find it.  I haven't had to do it myself, but to me it seemed like an easy change to do when I read it.

I was in the same boat as you as far as being able to watch everything with no problem on my PC, but not getting it to work on my Xbox.  Yesterday I went through the settings on the Xbox to clear the cache and reset the extender... after you reset the extender in the Xbox settings, shut down the VMCnetflix plugin and restart it.  It will say something about cloning the license or keeping the license cloned... say 'yes' to this and then try to watch something in 'Watch Now'... It worked for me... I hope it works for you.

    Did you try this: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/permalink/251420/272078/ShowThread.aspx#272078

Quote: "I often get "Cannot Play..." on the extender (DMA2100,) when I try to play a Netflix title after an upgrade of vmcNetFlix. Resetting the player doesn't usually help.

But, I've noticed, if I am in vmcNetFlix on the main PC, then after I reset the player once on the extender, it plays nicely after that. Every time.

So, try playing a title on the main PC, then stop it, but stay in vmcNetFlix, then go to the extender and try Play. You may have to reset the player once, but then it should work."

Yes, I tried that. I loaded a movie in VMC on the PC, watched 30 seconds, then stopped it and tried it on the 360. No dice.

I also tried clearing the cache and resetting VMC. Then I tried resetting it and then clearing the cache. Neither worked. I'm not sure what you mean by "shutting down" the plugin though... Do you mean just backing out of the menus on the 360 until it asks you if you'd like to leave NetFlix, or something to that effect?

I was playing around with it a little more tonight and I think it might have something to do with my limited harddrive space. I freed up some more space and got it to ~1.8GB on my Vista drive, and I think I got a little further.

When I would try to Play a movie, it would give me the normal codec error, but when I told it to re-initialize the player, it looked like it was trying to play the movie. The screen would clear and a black box would appear at the top left corner of the screen, and consume about 80% of the width and height of the screen. It wouldn't cover it all though, and along the bottom and right edges of the screen I could see the normal blue background behind it. After this, Media Center Extender would quit on my 360, and kick me back out to the generic Media Center error message that said something like "Lost connection to the Media Center host because of a UI window opening on the Media Center PC...". From that point on, whenever I would try to open the NetFlix Plugin on my 360, it would lock the 360 and I would have to restart it, remove it as an extender, and re-add it before I could use the NetFlix plugin.

That entire sequence was reproducible, and it happened 3 times before I just plain gave up on the whole thing.

    P.S. - I couldn't check the logs because they don't exist...The files:

  •  C:\Users\Mcx1\AppData\Local\Temp\vmcExtenderSetup.log
  •  C:\Users\Mcx1\AppData\Local\Temp\AxPlayer\AxPlayer.log
  • which are noted on the vmcNetFlix homepage don't exist on my machine. And yes, the Mcx1 account/directory does exist, but those log files don't. Are there any other log files?

Re: vmcNetFlix Beta 1.0.28R1 w/ Vista Extender Support (7/3/2008)

I finally got this to work and here are my steps in order...

    1. Turned my firewall off.
    2. Opened up port 8081 on my router.
    3. Turned UAC off.
    4. Uninstalled the vmcnetflix plugin from programs and features.
    5. Uninstalled the Xbox 360 extender from my pc by going to Tasks->Settings->Extender and uninstall(within Media Center).
    6. Reinstalled the Xbox 360 extender.
    7. Reinstalled the vmcnetflix plugin.
    8. Set IE7 as my default browser
    9. Played a Watch Now movie in IE7 and pressed pause(left opened).
    10. Played a Watch Now movie on PC Media Center and pressed pause.
    11. Then I clicked back on my IE7 browser to stop the movie and I stopped the movie in Windows Media Center as well.
    12. I opened vmcnetflix on my 360 and clicked yes when it asked me to clone.
    13. I waited about 30 secs and it said problem responding so I closed it and then opened it back up.
    14. I then repeated steps 9 and 10 just to be safe and then I played one of my already downloaded netflix movies on my 360.
    15. Finally I tried stream the watch now on my 360 and it worked!!!!

Re: vmcNetFlix Beta 1.1.1 w/ Vista Extender Support (7/16/2008)

I attempted to setup the vmcNetFlix on my Xbox today and was successfull in cloning the software however upon trying to play a movie I received a codec error and the next time I attempted to use the software it did not load. I also was unable to play a movie on my computer after this so I re-installed vmcNetFlix on my computer, setup the extender under media center again, and I am still having issues with a codec. I did not see any log files in the temp folder so I can't follow up on bug issues. The OS is Vista Ultimate x64 which is a recent install and can do other tasks from my media center on my Xbox.

Re: vmcNetFlix Beta 1.1.1 w/ Vista Extender Support (7/16/2008)

Alright guys and gals. I have been reading every post here to see what would help with my problem. I installed this program and everything worked off the bat, with the occasional cannot play video error. One day my friend came over and i wanted to show him this awesome application but all of a sudden it did not seem to work. So i tried everything i could think, went through the entire thread and every troubleshooting step on the main page. I had no luck for about a week till today i was reading everything on the main page and hit me. THE ANTI VIRUS PROGRAM! See i did not pay to much attention to this troubleshooting step because it was working correctly before with the same anti virus program. So i decided to exclude the application from my anti virus program and wouldn't you know it worked like a charm. Now the only thing is to see if eLuttman will release a fix to speed up the browsing. For whatever reason when i updated the application it seems to go slow and sometimes stall. Thank you for this awesome program and i hope to see some ps3 support in the feature. =P

Re: vmcNetFlix Beta 1.1.1 w/ Vista Extender Support (7/16/2008)

    Feature Request:
I would love to be able sort (in settings) the 1st & 2nd teir categories.
That way I could move my most used categories up to the far left and leave the disused categories down on the right. (i.e., Watch Now & Downloaded on the left, and Browse DVDs on the right)

For the 2nd tier either sorting manually (move up, move down), or maybe sort by title with the special categories (i.e., Top 50) on the top/left.

    Comment on Beta 1.1.1:
Wow this is much much faster!
From an earlier comment, you turned off sorting on all but the Genre categories.  I request that you turn it back on for the Downloads-All category.  There really aren't too many movies there.  So, the preformance hit can't be too bad.

    Re: vmcNetFlix Beta proxy problem

    Hi

I cannot play or download  movies on my pc. The message is 'proxy has not been installed' or similar.

I have stopped the virus manager, is there anything else i should do?

I can watch movies outside of vmc ok.

    thanks

What about having the ability to selectively remove the 1st teir categories (Browse DVD, etc.) that you don't use - for the 2nd teir are you requesting the ability to display the sort Genre categories sorted?

With beta 1.1, I switch to getting the items pre-sorted by netflix.  Right now, this only works for Genre under Watch Now and Browse DVDs - If I cannot figure out how to do this for the other categories, I'll put manual sorting back on for those.
