    Re: thanks

    Hi Thierry

Great thread and I have been following the steps and they all work until.....

I have the sane problem as you had - changed the default strings in the mui and they seem to stick but VMC stubbornly keeps the old ones.

You say in your post you "edited the mui". Could you tell us what you did in addtion to changing the names in the previously mentioned lines.

    Thanks

    Re: thanks

    Salut Dazema,

What I did to get it working was to download the file posted by MusicType here:
    http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/permalink/255424/249834/ShowThread.aspx#249834

I extracted the rar and put the files in their respective destinations :

    ehres.dll.mui in Windows\ehome\eu-US\
    ehres.dll in Windows\ehome
    Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll in Windows\ehome
and the font in the font folder.

I then edited ehres.dll to hide the Icons I did not want

I then edited ehres.dll.mui  to rename the strings I wanted to change

et voila, that's it ; should work for you too

    cheers
    thierry

    Re: thanks

Dazema, try running c:\windows\system32\mcbuilder.exe from an administrator command prompt (might take a while to complete) and then rebooting. This refreshes some sort of resource cache that Windows keeps, and your changes should take effect.

    Got it

    Thierry and Advent

Thank you both for your quick responses.

Thierry - I loaded Advent's files as you suggested and they worked first time. I still could not work out why! VMC appears to work without any ehres.dll.mui file but read on..

Advent Brilliant!  Presumably VMC runs off the cache. The cache gets its information from the mui but does not automatically refresh and thus changes to the mui do not register.

Your suggestion works brilliantly so I am now on the way to getting my own customised menu.

One I cannot seem to get rid of is the tile FM in the radio menu. - I have set up other internet radio stations which appear but would love to get rid of the random FM tile....

    Re: Got it

really happy you got it working too; seems like you were experiencing exactly the same problems as I did (MCE working even without the mui file, and not showing you the changes eventhough the modified strings were showing in the MUI file); guess indeed that files are used from the cache; nice find Advent about cleaning the cache; I guess that's what I was missing too.

    cheers

    ryan.tollefson:

Here are some basic customizations you can do (removing sports strip, TV strip, and MCE Spotlight): http://www.mediacenterguides.com/index.php?title=Menu_Customization.

Aside from the TV strip I'd highly not recommend using these methods.  A simple registry key will remove the Sports Strip, Tasks, Online Media....  For advanced options yes you'll still need to use a resource editor but it is an ugly method.

Re: Removing Unwanted VMC Start Menu Items

    Hi

This is a bit confusing for me I suck when it comes to software.

All I want to do is remove video libary as I use the video browser plugin and rename online media.

I made a backup of the ehres.dll file and opened the original in the resource tuner and got down to the SM.PICTURES.XML but this is where it got confusing I removed everything that mentioned video library (is that going to work) but when i go to save it it asks about the size difference I click OK and then it says Error: Can't create New Image File The original file has been probably packed.

I have tried to change the security settings in the properties tab to give everyone full controll but it won't let me.

Can anyone give me step by step instructions to do this or does someone alreay have a ehres.dll file with the video library removed.

    Thanks for the help

    Adam

Made my bride very happy to have all the 'clutter' removed from the interface...

Followed instructions carefully, and it worked like magic...

Re: Removing Unwanted VMC Start Menu Items

So has anyone that upgraded to TV pack 2008 checked out the updated XML files in ehres?  They have changed quite a bit.  Took a few times over to figure out what to edit to get my custom menu back.  Goodtimes!!!!!

I wasn't sure if it changed or if I was misremembering, but yeah, it seemed a little tougher this time.

Re: Removing Unwanted VMC Start Menu Items

    Good morning,

Sorry no haven't tried it (and not going to); took me so long in February to get my Mediacenter to look as I wanted that I have since made a Ghost image of the PC and have not installed a single security updates or updates by fear of breaking it :)
