Re: Windows Media Center TV Pack

Why so serious? Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, has granted us TWO fantastic ways to get the much vaunted "TV Pack":

    - Blow $3000 on a new PC in 2008 with TV Pack!
    - Blow $3300 on a new PC in 2010 with Windows 7!

Let us thank them and pray they do not alter the deal!

    @wbbigtymer

Do you really think we would do this to screw our customers intentionally? Perhaps them's the rules.

I like to think that S1Digital is a little more progressive and leading edge than Dell. We're so out there in fact that if you have an S1Digital system, it may pay for your to "lose" your recovery disc and you may have to contact us for a new one, becuase you lost your old one. The forthcoming recovery disc may have a certain update on it that previous ones didn't. Perhaps. Not saying anything, just saying. That's all. But of course you would have to have a S1Digital recovery disc, because it won't work on other systems (and we'd check to make sure you were a customer before we hand stuff out willy nilly). Oh, and just to clarify, a recovery disc wipes everything, it's not an upgrade. So I feel bad for other customers actually. :)

But it's not out yet anyay, so don't loose anything just yet.

    Chris - Moderator:
If a focused company like S1 isn't or can't provide an update, your chances of Dell doing so are less then .000001%.

    what he said.

TV pack may not be the end all, and for windows 7 you'll just need to caugh up the $200 for the OS upgrade, not a new machine.

I won't be surprised if Windows 7 has higher system requirements than vista or requires a GPU that supports DirectX 11+. And won't you need a new PC if you use cablecards since I doubt the old activation code will work.

They've said already that the requirements for win7 will be the same as for vista, infact they are even working on possibly reducing them.

As for cablecards that is a good question. I'm not sure ANYONE has thought about how an OS upgrade will work against the cablecard activation code.

The real kick in the crotch about Media Center Tv Pack is that it all but gaurentees that anyone who has allready purchased Vista will NEVER see any of the updates that they expected - such as DirectTV, clear QAM....

This is because any future updates that would come along will most certainly be predicated on the Media Center Tv Pack being present.

This is just a wag but, the reason that the Tv Pack appears to be OEM only, is that it can't be installed as an update and requires a fresh install to be put in.  The most likely reason for this would be that something that the TV pack needs,  needs to be put in the boot sector.  This is in all likely hood some form of added DRM.

So, all you Vista early adopter (everyone soo far) - what you got is what you get, you can buy Windows 7 in 2010 if you want anything more.

If the TV Pack is the only update this year, and S1 Digital already told us everything about the TV Pack and other Major vendors have confirmed both the exsitence and feature set of the TV Pack, then why can't ChrisL (under NDA) or any of the beta testers (under NDA) tell us anything about why the decision was made or even really confirm this is the full fiji update?

I'm 99.9% certain because this TV Pack is some short term stop gap fix, and that a full update is coming and it will be publically available so I think we all need to just calm down and see how this pans out. If we are at CES in janurary and the TV pack is stands as the only VMC update I'll be amazed.

Another good reason why I'm a happy S1Digital customer!

Let's just hope it happens before Windows 7... Otherwise, there's going to be one angry mob!

    Ha!  Awesome. Idea [I]

Hopefully Velocity Micro would help out one of their customers the same way you guys do.

I'm not holding my breath and wish I would have bought an S1 system instead of my VM system.  But that's how it goes I guess.. S1 got any trade-in programs for VM ocur systems? Wink [;)]

Will the Greenbutton special be available with the TV Pack?  Will you be offering 3-4 tuners with Ultimate on these systems?

While I'm still doing my "homework", my research shows that both S1Digital and Velocity Micro are probably the best choices around in terms of their HTPC technology offerings and pre-/post-sale support.  I'm sure both companies have to work within the legalities of their licensing agreements and probably have their hands tied right now while Microsoft is trying to figure if and how they can possibly work out an upgrade of some kind.  ...it's out of their hands; it's up to MS to make the next move.
