So there is no way to login to the same machine with the same user twice?(ie:say an administartor user is logged on locally to the box then try to RDP to that box with the same user)

I remember being able to do this before. I know it's possible in Windows 2003.

Im not sure if you can do that.

You can definately log on when someone is using the console. Just not sure if you can use the same user twice. I have a user for MCE called Media Centre, then I just log on as me or the admin account to do work on the box whilst people in the house are still watching TV and using the system.

Does anyone know if this hack breaks Extenders from working with 05?

RE: 2 users loggid in at same time on MCE 2005 - Concurrent Sessions - Better title

Would this do anything to the workgroup,

I have been able to access the workgroup for months now,
and I was even copying file from another computer, then I just did this little mod which worked.

But now when I go to My Network Places or try map a drive it says
"Workgroup is not accessible. you might not have the permissions"

though using the MCE addon My Movies which runs movies from another PC this works,

Any Ideas where my network machines went?

Mine appears to be working after applying rollup2, but this is the pre-official release of rollup2,

Same here. The rollup doesn't change any of the registry entries but it does replace the dll. Just copy the old termsrv.dll from the rc back in over the new one and you are set to go. MSFT has had many requests to support this and I think it is scheduled for Vista but who knows for sure.

This is working a treat for me. Very helpful!

BUT. Now of course I need to have two users set up on my MC and during boot it stops at the login screen with two users where as before I could get it to log straight through into the one default user I had set up.

I need this as it runs in my living room so needs to be wife friendly.

    Any helpwelcome.

    Ta, Scott..

Get XP Power toys from Microsoft or other tweaking software ie Tweak XP and enable auto logon of a particular account.... that account will then start on its own...

Did items 4. 5. & 6. only in the guide in the first post, over a Remote Desktop Session.
    Success!
    Thanks a lot!

Can anyone confirm if this tweak is still OK to use if you are using the new wave of extenders? (xbox 360)

Set it up last night and it appears to work fine for me. I can have MCE up on my main machine, remote desktop'd from my desktop and have the 360 connected as an extender all at the same time.

RE: 2 users loggid in at same time on MCE 2005 - Concurrent Sessions - Better title

    Here's a trick I just learnt.

This is good for people who can't get the dll-swap hack working, or are too prudent to use it.

I do use the dll-swap (but not rollup2), but sometimes I really need to log on as the main user - for setting up playlists and such.

Usually I use the old Ctrl-Alt-Enter, then Shutdown, so that the media center reboots and gets back to normal - but that's annoying if somethings being recorded. So yesterday I searched google groups and came up with a solution.

    C:\>tscon 0 /dest:console

that little command in windows will reconnect the main display and disconnect the remote one. Works like a charm.

I don't pretend to understand it fully, but from what I get it seems that their are two kinds of session: your user session (the account you're logged into, etc) and your console session (your media center versus your RDT connection).

Now, when you remote connect, it connects the running user session to your new remote console/session. The tscon command connects a specific session to a given console. So
    tscon 0 /dest:console
connects session zero to the the main console (and disconnects the remote one).

The post I found, which has nothing to do with MC, indicates that sometimes your console id might not be zero. The way to find out is with the windows command "qwinsta". (Just run this in a dos console on any XP machine and you'll get an idea of what it outputs).
I've found that zero always works. But if you want to be sure you can do this:
    C:\>for /f "tokens=3" %i in ('qwinsta ^| findstr /b ^^^>') do tscon %i /dest:console

which will run qwinsta, get the console session id and use it.

I've tried the simple 0 and it works, but it leaves your command prompt running (though it gets hidden when you re-run MC with the green button).
But I didnt want the console to stay open, and I didn't want my family to see the desktop without MC running, so I made a simple bat file that runs the command, then runs MC then exits. Here is the entire bat file content:

REM reattach the user sesssion to the main console
    tscon 0 /dest:console

    REM restart Media Center
    start c:\windows\ehome\ehshell.exe

put that in a bat file on your desktop, and when you've finished with your remote session, just double click it and bobs your uncle.

(Note that I'm restarting MC because when connecting remotely it either dies gracefully, or I kill it from the task manager which I get with Ctrl+Alt+End)
