The bad part is that it's just going to get worse.  With the restrictions and requirements that are being put on the digital side, as well as the paid off support of the FCC to allow blocking recording on dvr's for new release movies and shows, we'll be lucky to record 20% of the shows that we typically watch.

wow, now that it's happened twice in the USA, maybe they'll accidently fix the 25-40% failure rate we've had in Canada for 2+ years!

It isn't being ignored.  We hear you, and we are actively working on this.  You'll see that Tim from eHome SE has been posting in a couple other threads about this.  He'll post more info when we have it.

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

Hi Jeff, it's great to have you around, regardless of the tone of some of my posts and a few other posters.   So, how long until you move on to the Zune team?Wink [;)]

Like you've already heard in a couple of other threads, many here have been waiting on things to be implemented/fixed for a very long time.  During that time, small problems manifest in to big problems and create a negative energy that can grow on it's own.

This particular problem has received feedback from a variety of MS reps since it was brought up initially early last year.  Each time we have heard that MS knows of the problem and is looking at fixing it.  You are just the most recent to say the same thing.  This has gone on for a year and a half.  In business cycles, with quarters and such it doesn't seem that long, for average users(I don't know if we'd be considered average users), that is too long for a product to malfunction.  If this were any other device in the home, it would have been returned within a month.  I hope you can understand this and not take the comments personally.

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

I agree that our response to this could have been much better, much quicker.  I get the level of frustration our there surrounding this issue and am committed to improving the overall Media Center servicing process.

This particular issue deals with content protection, and any servicing in this area is sensitive.  We cannot make unilateral changes in this area and must work through a variety of considerations.  The process for releasing non-security updates to Windows Update also comes into play on how quickly we can get a fix released.

I jumped on this thread in March and wanted to identify a solution we could provide in the next non-security release cycle.  We had already missed the deadlines for the April and May release cycles, so we targeted June.  This still only gave us a couple of weeks to identify a solution before we had to lock down for the testing cycle.  Given the timeframe, we identified a safe, although limited, solution.  KB950126 released in June, including the limited solution that would provide relief for systems that did not have a set-top box or used analog over digital cable cards.

Throughout the release cycle, there is always a chance that our non-security updates will slip.  Part of this is due to our model - doing Cumulative Updates - and part of this is that a higher priority update may bump us out to the next release date.  As a general rule, we don't provide specific release date information or information about fixes contained in a Cumulative Update before it releases since a particular fix or the entire update may slip.

We continue to investigate this issue with the goal of providing a broader solution than what was included in KB950126.  I'll continue to provide updates, as appropriate, as we progress.

to be more specific, it deals with MCE reacting to a flag that technically doesn't exist in Canada, that no other PVR in Canada reacts to

most of us have "fixed" the problem by removing rollup2, or by stripping out the signal before it hits MCE

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

Like the previous poster, I am using XPMC, so that particular kb doesn't provide any assistance.  So, we're still hanging here and posting, hoping, that mce can be as reliable as my dvd-r or vcr for that matter.

Another week, 1 more failed recording, and another update Tuesday and still not resolved.

That's just because the fix has "slipped".  It's been slipping for nearly 2 years now since this problem was first reported.

The January fix, which was "pulled", must have accidentally "slipped" right out the door, since we never did hear about that one again....

    <sigh>

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

It's this type of thing that keeps me from wanting to buy a new VMC desktop pc to replace my old XPMC.  Or to pay for services like live with the xbox, something that there should be no charge for anyways.  I have no trust in them to do anything right for the consumer anymore.

I mean, they can't even fix known problems in a fair amount of time, much less this one, which is a key issue preventing MC from recording shows, the primary purpose of the software.

this doesn't get to slide off the front page

anyone else shocked that this isn't a priority for MS to fix?

Well, they did release the supposed fix today.  I'll know fairly quickly if it works or not, so I'll hold off on anymore comments until that time.

Btw, here is the link regarding the fix.

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

fix without dealing with set top boxes is pretty much useless
I'm not sure why they insist on half assing this

CGMS-A does not exist in Canada

I'm not sure why MS feels the need to *** around like this

I haven't installed a MS pvr in months, there's no way I could stay in business trying to install this garbage
