Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

    I've posted at this thread:

    http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/2/264305/ShowThread.aspx#264305

I have the ATI 1.17.1 firmware, XPS 420 Bios A04 installed, Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP1 installed. The system has 2 ATI DCTs and no great support from Dell on my XPS 420.

This gets more interesting every day.  My wife complained that Days of our lives stops recording 46 minutes into the show each day at 1:00 pm, Channel 232 Comcast, Cumming, Georgia (Atlanta).  Go figure.  So, I have been resettting the power to the ATI DCT's in the afternoon when I came up and found the "Restricted Content Errors (running 1.17.1 firmware).  So, this morning I repowered the DCTs before I left for work.  Guess what, the recording again stopped t 1:46 pm.   Did not make a difference.   Interesting.  Can someone tell me where the logs are and where to upload?

    - Dell XPS 420, Vista Ultimate SP1
    - 2 ATI DCT, Firmware 1.17.1
    - 1 LG LCDTV - 47LC7DF
    - 4 GB RAM
    - 3 1 TB Hard Drives
    - ATI 2600HD Digital Video Card
    - Comcast (Atlanta, GA), Cumming GA

I'm realizing that its not the exact same time everyday for me. Its actually 24 hours after I got it last working.

So, I'm wondering if I leave it on all night. Then in the morning, turn if all off before work. Unplug the works.

Then come back in the evening and hook it back up. If it would still go "Restricted" at the same time as today. OR.....will it be like starting over?

Only XPS Owners? What BIOS Version?

I went through the pages quickly and only saw mention of BIOS versions on a couple of  posts.  Is there anyone with A03 that has this problem?   Also, is it only XPS owners that are experiencing this?  I didn't see mention of any other hardware.  Maybe it was a combination of some sort of update/driver/firmware in conjunction with A04?

EDIT:  Someone posted earlier tonight that they think theirs broke after a BIOS update with Dell Support: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/264365/ShowThread.aspx#264365

Again, for the record, I have the following without the problem.  I am glad to help if anyone wants me to check some settings/configurations.

    • XPS 420 - BIOS A03
    • Always on; never sleeps or shuts down
    • Vista Ultimate SP1 (original Dell build and upgraded to Ultimate)
    • Dual ATI DCT (and HDHR)
    • Graphics Card - ATI HD 2600 XT
    • 3GB RAM
    • Firmware: 1.17 (from ATI); driver 6.0.6000.16386 with a date of 6/21/2006 (original install versions);  Windows Update was set to autoinstall nightly but this update did not appear (has since been turned off)
    • Microsoft Forefront Client Security for A/V and malware protection; always on
    • Windows Firewall always on
    • Addons: LifeExtender, MyMovies, and mceWeather

I have an XPS410 with BIOS version 2.5, dual ATI DCT (1.17), and have the problem exactly as described in this thread.

Re: Only XPS Owners? What BIOS Version?

The error first started for me less then 1 hour after I updated my BIOS from A02 to A04.  I also updated my ATI DCTs to 1.17 2 days prior to that, but I didn't have any issues until the BIOS update.  I cant be completely sure now if this was caused by 1.17 or BIOS A04.

my issue started while I was still on the  A03 version of the bios. I upgraded in an attempt to correct the problem.

Re: Only XPS Owners? What BIOS Version?

I'm still on the A03 BIOS version. I really think Microsoft did some sort of Media Center DRM update and messed it all up for us. Who would have thought it? DRM hurting people that want to play by the rules. Unheard of! Sorry if I sound bitter, it's late and this has me disgruntled.

Re: Only XPS Owners? What BIOS Version?

I might have found a solution that allowed me to record past 8:11.  this forum will not let me post it (I get really tired of writing long posts only to find this forum gives me a page not available and you have to start over)

so I posted it over at Dell forum, but found that by editing this post I could get it here... Stupid board

Same here.  Only upgraded to try and fix the problem that occurred on A03.  But I have some good news..

Last night I systematically approached this issue.  I decided to do a system restore.  I had done this before but only simply.  It occurred to me that when you do a system restore Vista just goes ahead and installs all the updates it has previously downloaded as soon as you boot up so really if you are trying to undo an update system resotre in its simplest form is no good.

So here is what I did.

    1) Delete and remove all downloaded windows updates. This requires you to delete the data in the following folders c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download and c:\windows\softwaredistribution\EventCache

    2) Unplugged my ATI tuners.

    3) Disconnected my internet connection (this is important because when you restore, it will restore yur windows update settings and if set to download automatically will immediately start getting the updates again if you have an internet connection)

    3) Performed a system restore back to May 13

    4) Went into control panel and turned updates to notify me first

    5) Rebooted

    6) Now that we have removed all updating, I began to reinstall the tuners, first without the cable cards. Plugged them in and did a TV set up

    7) Then I flashed the 1.17 firmware to the tuners.  Waited 7 minutes

    8) Turned off the system and plugged in the cable cards

    9) Turned on the computer

    10) Went into Media Center and activated the digital part

    11) Prayed......

At exactly 8:11 my pc continued to record the program it was scheduled to record at 8pm.  This is the first time in days that an 8pm recording has actually recorded properly.  As of 7am this morning everything was still working.  If 8pm comes and goes this evening I will breath more easily, but for me it is possible (touch wood) that this has solved it.

The reason the system restore did not work before was because of the windows update issue,  just reinstalling the updates on top of the restore as soon as it boots.

If as of 8pm it is still working it will confirm to me the problem was caused by a windows update.

^ Let us know if you get it working for over 24 hours....Once you past that point it looks like it might actually be working.

Re: Only XPS Owners? What BIOS Version?

Not sure.  The wife got an error when she went from one room to another and restarted the receiver service without noting the error.  I had another error free recording night last night.  I will know this evening.

One other thing I did was turn off real time protection in Windows Defender.  Forgot to mention that.

I will know this evening she is out all day.  A

So Mogulbasher, now that it's been a couple of days has the error shown up again or are you back to normal?
