Ok this is strange problem that I cant figure out. I load VMC and the sound is fine and then load MyMovies and start to play a dvd watch the dvd everything is ok. Then try to play a differnt dvd now I have no sound. I go back to the main menu and getting the VMC sounds but when I try to play music I get an audio error and when I try to play a dvd I get no sound I have to restart the computer to resolve this issue

    Re: Strange problem with SPDIF

I am having the same problem, I find that the problem happens after I play a DTS dvd then try do a normal dolby digital movie I get the sound hanging problem. I thought it was something to do with ffdshow but it isn't. I am running an asus motheboard with onboard realtek hd audio. I am connected via coax to my onkyo amp. I have DTS and DD set to spdif passthrough and set to spdif in media center. If anybody has any pointers on whats going on or how to fix i would really appreciate it as the WAF factor is at an all time low due to this!!!

    Re: Strange problem with SPDIF

i had simular issues with an Asus mainboard.  i had better results using microsoft drivers for the sound.  Just uninstall the current drivers and then let windows find drivers online, it may work for you too..

For the most part mine is all good, apart from some distortion every now and then.

    Re: Strange problem with SPDIF

Are you getting distortion on the spdif output? Or on analogue output?

I am away from home at the moment. Did you have success when you uninstalled the realtek audio driver and just used the standard windows audio drivers?

    Re: Strange problem with SPDIF

I only use SPDIF, every now and then the audio will start to distort.  If i stop the play back (must be stop not pause) and the resume all is good....  This does not happen with anything encoded in some sort of surround.  All in all the windows HD audio drivers worked out much better than the original!!!

Thought it a good idea to mention that a while back i got rid of AC3 filter in fovour of Spdifer....

    Re: Strange problem with SPDIF

If you cant get it figured out,  Iwould highly recommend getting a sound card that supports DTS Surround and Dolby Digital Live. I have the Auzentech Xplosion and couldnt be happier with it. it converts all sound to DD 5.1.

    Re: Strange problem with SPDIF

I have a Dell E520 tower with a soundblaster XI-FI running a toslink to my Yahmaha reciever.  I never had any issues til after installing Vista SP1.  I am now getting a scretching sound when playing video or music.  I thought it was the OS so tried going back to XP Media Center 2005 with no luck.  I also thought it was my sound card which originally was a turtle beach DDL card.  I have tried just about everything, including a new optical cable.  Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem.

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Strange problem with SPDIF

addman12 sounds like you are one of the lucky people who has a sound card driver not compatible with sp1.  But to cover the basics; have you checked for an updated driver? Tried to let windows installed a default HD Audio driver (if available)?

    Re: Strange problem with SPDIF

Replacing the realtek driver with the windows generic driver did the trick for me. Now i spotted a new problem is anyone noticing that sometimes the highlight graphic for the dvd menus disappears in vista? i think i saw a thread regarding this some time ago....

I had the same problem 2 years ago on MCE 2005 with DVD menus did not highlight , it was the video driver, after updating the video driver the DVD menus worked and you could see the highlighted menu.
