Re: Does XP SP3 hose your MC2005?

Someone posted a fix for this over in the AumHa forums.  After SP3 installs do the following:

    1. Download and reinstall the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
    2. Go to the Start menu, choose Run and type CMD
    3. In the black box that opens, type this carefully (or, Copy/Paste):

    %windir%\ehome\medctrro.exe /o /p RunOnce

    4. Reboot and it should be working

I just installed SP3. Start to finish took less than an hour. After reboot, I started media center and was able to watch TV right away. All my extenders work. No problems here!

My WHS connection was not affected either.

    Gargybloke:

I think the problems people have seen after sp3 are just very similar to problems some folk experienced after MCE update 2. Have a try of the solutions on Aaron's blog (below) and you should be able to fix them ok.

I Don´t know how i can make it up to you for passing this information on, this really made my day, or should i say my daughter´s ;-)

I followed his advice but in the end, Peter Rosser´s program fixed the problem. It seems to be as he describes, an error with the .NET installation.

Now, time for a coffe and a ghosteimage...  Tallyho

Completely hosed my MCE2005 also.  Even after the uninstall, everything originally broken by SP3 was still broken.  None of my media would play at all, with several errors every time I started the Media Center.  Thank God (again) for image backups, which I created immediately before the SP3 install.  Don't think I'll try it again.

I did mine at the weekend using the CD version (rather than the download version or WU) and it went without a hitch. From what I gather the CD version has the best success rate. I'm not sure if everyone can get it though.

Re: Does XP SP3 hose your MC2005?

I run a mix of both MCE 2K5 systems and Vista Home Premium systems and I have no problems with at the very least beta testing “Windows 7” if the opportunity arises so I am by no means fixated on XP. Still, I value my MCE licenses and hope to get a lot more use out of them.

I’ll give SP3 a try if it will fix the minor issue of my OEM HP m1070n (originally MCE 2K4 SP1 with free HP DVD upgrade to MCE 2K5 SP2) no longer being able to go back into suspend mode after awakening for Guide downloads / preset-recordings.

Naturally, I’ll cover all the bases by backing up the system before hand. I have a NAS solution coming in tomorrow so I can give it a go.

BTW, I think the stanby problem was cause by using the MCE 2K5 upgrade DVD before updating the system BIOS to the latest version, not sure though

A LOT of folks have standby issues. There is no real fix for it.

Believe me when I say, I did a lot of research on this problem so I know a lot of people have standby issues,……a lot! It just seems like one of the perfect fixes to add to a service pack if at all possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were no such fix though.

Anyway, I’m sure I can fix the stanby issue by simple using the HP recovery set and then going back to MCE 2K4 but the update to 2K5 actually fixed some issues as well. Besides who wants to go back to MCE 2K4? However, as I said before, I strongly suspect the stanby issue was caused by not updating the motherboard BIOS before installing the MCE 2K5 update.

I can experiment with it a bit since I bough a Seagate 750GB HDD and would like to replace the existing Seagate 320GB HDD.

There was a beta program I tried (the name escapes me) that seemed to work very well but it introduced some stability issues so I uninstalled it.

I doubt installing a BIOS update before or after any software in the OS would hurt.

Re: Does XP SP3 hose your MC2005?

Well, I've cracked installation of SP3 on my system.

    SP3 unregistered 2 of the 3 services - doh!

Re-registered them as detailed on Aaron Stebner's blog, then used Peter Rosser's excellent reregister/rebuild  program and it cured all the issues (and some I had been having previously with random .NET-related crashes).

Phew. One happy MCE user (again!).

Re: Does XP SP3 hose your MC2005?

I am also running XP MCE and have yet to install SP3 - at least I don't think I have.  What advice would you guys give - I have installed all updates in the past - should I just skip SP3 altogether?

Smile [:)] Re: Does XP SP3 hose your MC2005?

SP3 broke my TV and guide features in MCE the same way as described in previous posts in this thread.  Unfortunately the posted fixes did not work for me and I used the 12-step process in the link below which fixed my MCE after installing SP3.

Thanks Aaron Stebner, your 12 step program worked great for me!   Big Smile [:D]
