What are folks using these days to rip DVDs?  I had been using DVDShrink but most of the new DVDs don't work on it (well at least the kid's movies that I want to backup).

Hands down, DVD Fab decrypter or platinum depending on your needs.

I use ripit4me (google it) it is a frontend utility that uses dvd decrypter and dvd shrink.....i have NEVER had it fail....it does some neat tricks to rip any dvd to date.....

Depends on what is required, and how I want to rip.

I have used DVD decrypter, DVD Shrink + nero, and AnyDVD.

AnyDVD can indeed pummel a drive into submission of you are having region coding issues :p

On Vista I used:

Start command prompt as administrator

Created a shared folder on my server with the share name "DvdInfoCache" (You can use any sharename here)

Changed to the directory C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\eHome\  (this directory path is hidden so you may have to change the options to be able to see it.

Renamed the DvdInfoCache directory to DvdInfoCache_copy

Ran the command mklink /D DvdInfoCache \\MyServer\DvdInfoCache

Now when I run DVD manager, it makes the XML files in this directory.  I have done the steps above on all my other media centers and they now load the xml files from that directory as well.

I'm writing this from memory so I hope I have all of the steps right.  If not, I'm sure someone will correct me.

I haven't done any updates yet to the program (chapters, etc) because I'm on a business trip to New York until the end of next week.  I hope the last changed worked fine, especially the IMDB lookup.

Yes IMDB lookup works great, bit slow but very useful for amazon sometimes lacks data or a title at all.

I have uploaded a new version to try fixing the issue where DVD folders don't show up in the list but they do in the VMC library.

I improved the scanning of the folders and I also added a new option to View Error Log. It is found on the main screen under the Advanced menu.

Please let me know if you still have problems. If you see any erros in the Error Log please copy and paste the log and send it to me (taranu@gmail.com).

Because of the limitations of VMC that I couldnt overcome I switched to MediaPortal.
But i'm still following these forums :)

New version up, this version should be more aggressive at finding the DVD folders. In the previous versions I was checking for VIDEO_TS folders but VMC can play a DVD with no VIDEO_TS folder. Now it also checks for a VIDEO_TS.IFO file without a VIDEO_TS folder.

NOTE: please uninstall the previous version (using the Control Panel's Programs and Features) before installing this one.

Just uploaded a new version. I think this version will now fix most, if not all the problems that people had with not finding the DVD folders.

Chanes:

- better detection of nested DVD folders

- automatically add the Public Videos and User Videos to the scanning list

Thanks again for the program I have used it to finish of my DVD library with over 350 DVD's

Works great for me, only one thing I could ask though. If its possible to either add chapters to cache info or even if thats not possible to leave any existing chapter info alone.

This would make the program perfect for me as I have chapter info for a lot of my DVD's and have to cut and paste each one to avoid losing it.

Man so far I'm digging it.  One feature that would rock is to have a button or something for an initial setup to automatically download the info from amazon (as it is faster than imdb atm). Then obviously you could verify and do a manual search to correct any misread titles.  It would definately cut down on time for people with large libraries.  Any possiblities for that?

what makes this stand out? there is a great plugin out there called MyMovies and it has made A LOT progress. is there anything tht this has that mymovies doenst?

Personally for me, I like this a lot better in that I can use an already existing funciton of Media Center.  The DVD Gallery is perfect for me, and doesn't require me to have a database, and update the database, etc. 

To me, this is great, no need to install MyMovies on all three of my VMC desktops, and the two VMC laptops.  I can simply run a quick script to change reg entries for all users, to setup the gallery, and to provide the shared folders they should be looking at.  Once I do that it's done.  Less time consuming than MyMovies, and I like the look of Dvd Gallery better than mymovies. 

If this app were to have "Auto Fill" type function like someone suggested above that would even be better.  Although after having used it for 150 of my DVD's, it's easy now whenever I add a dvd.
