Does SageTV support this yet?  Or is that still "coming soon"?

Haven't downloaded yet since I don't have an HD-PVR, but their current public beta release of 6.4.3 supports it.  From what I've read on their forum from people--it seems to work fine.

(Note, I'm currently still running 6.3.10 release, so take the info with a grain of salt)

You can pre-order the HD-PVR but they still haven't started shipping them yet.  They had a supply chain issue with the cases.  They should start shipping this week though.  Both BeyondTV and Sage have beta versions that work with it.  Media Center won't work with it until the next release.  Hauppauge has given some indications that the next version might be out as soon as this summer, but some don't think it'll be out until later.  Apparently there are a limited number of beta testers right now though.

Has this been verified that the next release of MC will work with it?  By next release do you mean the "Fiji" update that is a late-08, early 09 release or are we talking Windows 7?  And am I correct to assume that this card will never work with MCE 2005?

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

I think it can be said for certain that it will never work with MCE 2005.  MCE 2005 does not support H.264, and Microsoft has said definitively that there will be no feature releases for MCE 2005.  Hauppauge could provide a driver for XP/MCE 2005, but the actual recorded stream would not play without an H.264 decoder.  Even if such a decoder was made available by a 3rd party (3rd parties do provide the current MPEG2 decoders in MCE 2005), it would not work on V1 extenders.

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

Hauppauge has verified that it will be compatible with Vista Media Center, possibly as early as this summer.  It's speculation that Fiji will be what makes the HD-PVR compatible with VMC, but it's not far fetched.  I would think it would take a fairly major update to VMC to make it compatible with H.264, and thus the HD-PVR.  With Fiji already being beta tested, and Windows 7 due in 2010, it would be stupid for MS to wait until late '08/ early '09 to release it.  As far as XP MCE, I think we can safely assume that the HD-PVR will never be supported, at least not by MS and Hauppauge.

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

OK, well I know I want a Hauppauge HD PVR Model 1212.

So for now I suppose I could use the bundled ArcSoft software and Hauppauge scheduler for background recordings. Since I primarily use an HDHomeRun with Media Center I can just be sure not to use the cable set top box for manual viewing, manual recording or scheduled recordings. Then I can use a automated program to transcode to a format that Media Center supports and automatically dump it in a videos folder for use in Media Center. Alternatively, I could use software like PowerDVD Ultra or an included Arcsoft app as a plug-in to Media Center and access the program from the main Media Center menu.

BTW, Hauppauge posted a quick start guide for the HD PVR and some other stuff like the Hauppauge scheduler:

If Fiji fully supports the Hauppauge HD PVR I’ll buy another Vista license.

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

Just received mine yesterday.  Definitly worth the wait.  The video quality is better than I expected.  I just hope that MS starts supporting HD-PVRs in VMC soon.  While the hardware works great, the included software is pretty rudimentary.  I might have to use Beyond TV until it's supported in VMC.  Both Snapstream and Sage are very close to supporting HD-PVRs.

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

Right - BeyondTV also has a beta that supports it.  I got it running with the BeyondTV beta last night (albeit with some rough edges).  I guess what I meant is that they are very close to supporting it with a production version.  My point is that Microsoft better get its act together and support it in VMC, and soon.

Support will come from Hauppauage when/if it comes at all.

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

If it were completely up to Hauppauge, why wouldn't they support VMC?  I would think that it would take at least some work on the part of MS to support H.264, and thus support the HD-PVR in Media Center.  Hauppauge might be able to come up with something, but it would be about as kludgey as FireSTB (something that would monitor VMC for recordings, then record through the HD-PVR, then transcode to MPEG-2, then add metadata to create dvr-ms file).

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

Sorry, we are mixing the two.  Microsoft does have to provide some things on the backend (like H.264), but any other supportability issues will come from Hauppauge and not Microsoft.

I'd say that Microsofts end of the support is the more involved/important part...Hauppauge has been pretty good with their drivers and such but it's VMC that needs the overhaul to put a dvr-ms wrapper around a H.264 file as it currently only understands regular old MPEG2 being in there.  I like to think they built the dvr-ms format to be flexible enough to make this change fairly mundane but having worked in MS technologies for the past 16yrs or so I don't have any real faith that that's the case :(

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

So far, I am disappointed.  I cannot get Totalmedia Theater to start.  No 5.1 is a show stopper for me.  The box is going on the shelf until the driver update supports 5.1.
