    from sales@hauppage.com:

We will have Vista Media Center drivers for the new HD board.  Microsoft will probably have HD support at the same time.

    Regards,

    Dorothy

Did you ask specifically about Vista drivers - can we make any inferences from the above response that there will be no support for this card in XP from Hauppauge's perspective?

I think in terms on media center, yes Vista will be required, but for not MSFT applications, I am pretty sure from my conversation with them that an XP driver will be available.  They have XP drivers out for all their latest cards, but with no h.264 support in MCE2005, I can see why they aren't trying to do an MCE2005 driver.

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

So we will have the card and Vista MCE drivers from Hauppauge in Q1 (if they say it, I believe it).  But what about H.264 support in Vista MCE.  It's great to hear Ian has it up and running for the next release, but what the heck does that mean?  If not part of SP1, does that mean it will even be available in 2008?  Any guidance here from the ehome team would be appreciated.  (Again, why so tight lipped about this!)

BTW, support in SageTV is also only speculation.  In the SageTV forums, there is no confirmation from the SageTV folks on support for the card.

True, but on Jan 8 the CTO & Founder of Sage posted a message asking folks for a good name for a card that could do this.

If Bill Gates posted a similar message on this forum it wouldn't be an official announcement of support but I think the message would be clear.

Trust me, the Sage guys are working with Hauppauge on this.  They'd write the driver themselves if they had to, it's too important a product for them.

Is there some reason I should trust you?  I mean, I've been hearing similar stuff from others on this board about all the great things that MCE is going to do.  But, nothing ever comes from it.

Hauppauge, on the other hand, is a company that actually delivers products.  I wish Microsoft would sell the whole Media Center thing to Hauppauge.  Their 3 developers could probably produce twice as much stuff as the 100 developer ehome group!

Sage and MSFT are very different companies.  Sage is a very focused company, and I assure you, they understand how this could open up a larger market for them.  They are pretty good about keeping promises.  In any case, you can wait a month or two and you'll have your answer.  This isn't like waiting a year for Fiji...

I emailed Hauppauge to ask them if there will be XP drivers for the HD PVR and here is their response:

All of our new products will be XP/Vista compatible.

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

If you asked them if there would be drivers for Windows XP, that doesn't imply it will work in MCE 2005.  That just means the card will work under Windows XP.  If this thing shoots out H.264, it has no chance of working in MCE 2005 at all.

Completely agree.  Not an issue though for Sage which supports h.264 in XP, and I suspect that's true for BTV and Mediaportal too.  But MCE2005 doesn't, so it's not really possible there.

I agree.  I did specifically ask about Vista Media Center, but I don't see MCE2005 supporting H.264 so I didn't ask about it.

I do expect there will be drivers for the MCE2005 OS, but Media Center itself will likely only be able to play the recordings through My Videos and likely won't provide PVR capabilities.  Recording would have to be done manually using the Hauppage capture software.

Its too bad Tim Moore stopped working on FireSTB.  It would have been quite easy to add the ability to make HD recordings to FireSTB using this new card with MCE2005 (no Live TV though).

Another reason to make my upgrade from MCE 2005 to Sage rather than from MCE 2005 to Vista?  I believe that would also allow me to continue to use my V1 extenders with MCE, although not with the H.264 content unless using Transcode 360.

    Re: Hauppauge HD PVR

To give another option, GB-PVR will also support this new Hauppauge device from the day it's publically available. GB-PVR is free, so wont cost you anything. You can record high def H.264 channels from your set top box and it'll automatically change channels using the device's IR Blaster.

Users on Vista with modern video cards supporting H.264 video acceleration can also take advantage of the EVR renderer and its support DXVA 2.0 giving super low CPU usage for playback of these recordings.

...and if you try it and have any problems, post the details on the GB-PVR forums and I'll do my best to sort it out for you. (http://forums.gbpvr.com)
