    Question about CableCard and HDHomeRun

Can they coexist in the same machine? I've been looking into getting a CableCard PC since they are finally starting to become reasonable but I was wondering if I could use my HDHomeRun along with the CableCard tuners so I could have 4 total tuners.

Also, not necessarily on the same subject, but does anyone know if Comskip works on CableCard recordings? I'm assuming it doesn't but was just curious.

Re: Question about CableCard and HDHomeRun

Yes I have this setup and have no issues.

The comskip applications do not work with cablecard recordings..

Re: Question about CableCard and HDHomeRun

I have 2 ATI DCTs and 2 tuners provided by an HDHomeRun (4 tuners total) and they coexist well.

    No idea on Comskip...

I see in your signature you are using the HDHomeRun for Clear QAM.  Is that right?  How does that work when mixed with the ATI's?  Are you using cablecards in the ATI's?  How does Media Center juggle tuners when recording?

I have my HDHRs tuning ATSC signals so Media Center keeps my cable channels and the OTA channels (and therefore the tuners) separated in the guide.

I'm also using the HDHomerun for QAM.  It works because media center doesn't know it's QAM, it thinks it's ATSC.  In media center it works the same way as installing a standard ATSC card, like what you're seeing now.  The only difference is the HDHomerun unit is tuning QAM instead of ATSC.

Cool...  How are channels that are on all tuners handled?  For example, I have 313 (ABC) on the ATIs so would it show up as 313 on the HDHR as well?  I guess it gets more complicated if you have cablecards then, right?  In that case, 415 (encrypted premium) will be handled by the ATIs ok but not the HDHR.  Do I have this all wrong?

Re: Question about CableCard and HDHomeRun

    Jitters.

Using the HDHR with the ATI DCT's works great.
Media Center still thinks that the signal that it is getting from the HDHR is ATSC so it still places the channels in a different range.
Tuner juggling is really more of a matter of me just remembering to schedule properly.

    Example...
I get NBC 3 times with the current tuner setup...
Channel 4 = SD basic cable feed via ATI DCT
Channel 784 = HD digital cable feed via ATI DCT
Channel 1084 = HD qam feed via HDHR

So when I want to record Heroes I just remeber to set it to record on channel 1084 only... that way it still leaves my ATI DCT's free so I can surf the entire range of digital cable.

It's not perfect by any means, but after some getting use to my wife even has no problems scheduling stuff to record from the HDHR if it's local.

    cheers,

So in your example 784 and 1084 are exactly the same channel just brought in by different tuners.  The call-sign for the channel is exactly the same....?

For the premium channels, you just leave them out of the map for the HDHRs?

    Thanks...

Re: Question about CableCard and HDHomeRun

Yep 784 and 1084 are the same channels with the same call signs. VMC just thinks one is coming from digital cable and one is coming from ATSC/OTA.

Also yep for the premium channels, you just end up leaving them out of the qam remap file and windows never even tries to tune them.

    cheers.

Re: Question about CableCard and HDHomeRun

Sounds like the ATI DCT + HDHR (using qam) scenario is good and working for some users... how about the DCTs + HDHR (using ATSC)?  Anyone have this working and can confirm?

Time Warner in my area broadcasts all of the networks in clear qam EXCEPT NBC.  The only NBC on my feed is the analog SD channel, so now you know why.

While we're on the subject, would the ATI DCTs work with the Aver A180 tuning ATSC if I decide to use a card I already own as opposed to buying a HDHR (which seems now hard to find)?

To Media Center it doesn't know that the HDHR is doing QAM, it thinks it's ATSC, so yes it would still work if the HDHR was really doing ATSC.

Also Media Center officially supports 2 DCTs (or analog) and 2 ATSC tuners, so as long as the ATSC tuner(s) you want to use are supported by Vista Media Center they'll work with DCTs also.

You can buy the HDHR form any of the 7 re-sellers listed on the HDHR homepage, http://www.silicondust.com/wiki/products/hdhomerun

I have mine configured exactly the way you have asked about and it works perfectly.  2 ATIs with cable cards and 2 tuners from the HDHRs tuning OTA via ATSC tuners.

The A180 will work as well with the ATIs.  I had two of those before I started using the HDHR.

Re: Question about CableCard and HDHomeRun

Following this thread really has me confused. I have 2 cablecard tuners and 2 ATSC tuners from VBOX. When i activated the cablecards it appears to have disabled all my ATSC tuners and now i have no 1000 level channels. This thread makes it look like it is possible to use 2 cablecards and ATSC at the same time, despite other threads saying this is impossible.

Can someone elaborate please, is it possible to use cablecard and OTA ATSC both at the same time?

    Thanks!
