This is probably the same issue that Gordon was having earlier, it is a limitation in the MCE Controller program. The server program just sends the commands to the computer globably, not specifically to Media Center .
To summarize, this means that when you press a button on the MCE Virtual Remote program, it sends a command to the MCE Controller program. When the MCE Controller program recieves the command, it then sends a new command to the system. Unfortunatly it does not specifically target Media Center with its commands. This means that if Media Center doesn't have focus, it won't recieve the commands from the MCE Virtual Remote.
As I mentioned earlier to Gordon, if anyone is feeling ambitious you could try to change the MCE Controller program so that it will only send commands to Media Center (sourcecode is available on sourceforge) . That should fix the problem.
*Edit* - this has been fixed for versions v0.17 and newer

I haven't figured out how to make it run on the extender yet... I think what needs to be done is that the MCE Controller program needs to be launched in the MCX1 account when the extender logs in. I haven't had a lot of time to look at how to do this, so if anyone has some suggestions, I'm all ears.

I just did a fairly large update to this program - please see the front page for the latest info, screenshots, and download link.
Quick summary:
- Added Media Mode and Number Mode to give access to many more buttons
- Color coded the background to go along with the modes
- Media Mode has a timer on it, so it will go back to Standard Mode after about 45 seconds, or about 2 seconds after you hit a button from within Media Mode
- Interface was made just slightly shorter for touchscreens with large DPI settings.
Just my $0.02.

MCE Virtual Remote v0.14 (beta)
I'm releasing v0.14 as a beta. The link on the first page will not show beta releases, so if you want it, download it from this post. Delete your current "settings.ini" before using this release (it will create a new one with a slightly different format). *Edit - this no longer needs to be done on the current version*
Release Summary:
- Support for up to 8 servers.
- Quick server change with righ-clicking in the remote window (background).
- Now has a settings window so editing the settings.ini is no longer needed.
- You can now keep the remote open on a failed connection.
New right click menu and new "Settings" window:
Please provide feedback for this release, especially any issues or thoughts about handeling multiple servers. Download MCE Virtual Remote v0.14 here.
*Edit - this version is no longer current - please check more recent postings for new beta releases, or the first page for official releases.*
Just my $0.02.

Re: MCE Virtual Remote v0.14 (beta)
Uhmm, I can't find a stop button on the transport. E.g. I'm watching live tv and then want to stop it?

Re: MCE Virtual Remote v0.14 (beta)
quick question\request... First let me explain what im tryin to do, i have a multi-zone AV receiver, my HTPC is hooked up through it by component..2 zones of audio, to my home theater room and to my outside patio, i also will be using a Nokia 770 tablet for control,
Now the question is can you add the now playing que from VMC and make it show on my tablet..for example i want to see my playlist\library when im outside and just hit play...is something like this possible or is it only for your reg commands(play, stop, etc)

Re: MCE Virtual Remote v0.14 (beta)
Gordon Moore:Uhmm, I can't find a stop button on the transport. E.g. I'm watching live tv and then want to stop it?
There isn't one *Edit - the stop button was added in v0.16 * . I never use the stop button, and I wanted to keep the interface as simple as possible for typical usage, so the Stop button didn't make the cut. I assumed that Pause would be good enough - but I didn't think about the fact that when you pause a live TV stream it will automatically start playing when the buffer is full .
For me, I usually just leave the live stream going and turn off my TV so there is no sound - in otherwords, I never stop the stream. I do see that this might not work for some people, but I really don't want to add buttons unless I have to... how about if I were to make it so when you press and hold the pause button for a few seconds it stops? Would that work well enough?
CaMs:...i also will be using a Nokia 770 tablet for control,
Now the question is can you add the now playing que from VMC and make it show on my tablet..for example i want to see my playlist\library when im outside and just hit play...is something like this possible or is it only for your reg commands(play, stop, etc)
That is possible. I have been toying with the idea of adding the current state of media to the remote in some way, and perhaps even the music library, but I haven't figured out how best to do it yet. Also I don't know MCML at all, so I would have to learn that first (I think, if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know). Or if anyone has a good working example of how to get the current status from the MediaCenterSink please share and I'll see what I can do (pretty sure that's what would need to be done).
So back to your question CaMs, yes it is possible, it will probably be a while (if ever) before I put it into MCE Virtual Remote. As far as running it from your Nokia (or any other smartphone for that matter) - unfortunatly there isn't a good way for me to port this program to other platforms (non-Windows XP/Vista). Also I don't have a smartphone, so it makes it hard to develope for that platform without being able to really test it - if anyone wants to donate one I'd be happy to give it a shot though .
One thing you might want to look at CaMs is the "Pocket Remote 2.0" from Niveus (www.niveus.com). It gives you a lot of control from a smartphone, and gives you feedback. I actually just saw this for the first time this morning and was playing with the trial a bit. It is neat, but to me it seems a little quirky (not that my program isn't, but hey, mine's free) - I expect small programs like this to be near flawless if I'm going to pay for them (not sure what the cost is, but I know it's not free).
Just my $0.02.

Re: MCE Virtual Remote v0.14 (beta)
thanks for the reply ryan,
The Nokia 770 is not a smartphone, its a web tablet. You would not need to dev. it for any other platform...you connect to your Vista|Xp machine using rdesktop while on the 770

Re: MCE Virtual Remote v0.14 (beta)
As far as a smartphone/pocket pc version is concerned I personally would love one. Have you considered using the emulator options? Or sharing code?
In terms of stop functionality, I don;t mind your idea, but would a small circle somewhere be a a major issue? or even another page? for specialist transport

Re: MCE Virtual Remote v0.14 (beta)
After lurking in this forum for years to-day I had to join just to tell Ryan Tollefson a huge
THANKYOU!!!!
Why is so good, at lest for me, I contracted motor neurone disease (mnd/als) a couple of years ago. About november I found I could no longer type. But a month ago I found this head tracking device called a Smartnav. It works by the camera (???) tracking a silver dot on my hat or my modified sunglasses (I’ve taken the lens out). I type with an on-screen keyboard, it’s slow, but at lest I can communicate again.
That’s not me, she’s easier to look at
I had been look at remote control software for an old PDA and using a type of remote desktop to the PDA via usb, it was all crapy, now I can use my mce again. I have to tell you how important this is, I was left home alone the other day (bliss) but I can no longer use the mce remote or the mce keyboard anymore and DR Phil came on, I wasn’t able to change the channel or even turn it off. So considering I’m male and 40, I learnt if I was a 50 year old woman and have a 25 year old son I shouldn’t bring 30 year old one night stands home. I suppose I should be grateful it wasn’t a vacuum cleaner add or ………
Gordon Moore:Uhmm, I can't find a stop button on the transport. E.g. I'm watching live tv and then want to stop it?
I would love a stop button and as mentioned above I think a long hold down on the pause is a great idea but I can’t perform that with the Smartnav, bummer ha.
I think may have created something thousands of disabled are going to really appreciate.
So thx again Ryan.
Cheers Steve
