Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions

As I posted a while ago, I fixed my cancelled recordings by hitting the reset button on my DirecTV.

Unfortunately, I was still getting a Content Protection error watching HBO on my XBoxes.

I found an EASY fix for that:

    http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp?force=1

reboot and I was all set.

I'm running Vista Ultimate Edition, Hauppauge PVR-150 + 2 External USB Hauppauge tuners, NVidia 7600 GT Video Card, and 3 DirecTV HD Boxes connected via S-Video.

    Good luck!

EDIT: That only seemed to fix the problem... it worked on a new XBox I added after the DRM fix, but not on an XBox I had connected to the system previously...  Now I have one that works and one that doesn't.  I disconnected the XBox from the XBox 360 control panes and reregistered it, but that didn't fix that one either.  I then removed it from the main computer (in media center), and registered it again
, no luck.  Lastly, I swapped XBox 360's with a friend, and low and behold his worked fine.

What could be wrong with an XBox to make it display that message -- it doesn't seem to be a problem on the Media Center side...

All are running the latest update from XBox Live, I even tried the "bad" one without the HD attached, and even tried loading my gamertag onto it and getting online first.  Nothing seemed to change it...

I'm always afraid to run anything that says it will reset my system's DRM.  When you run these things, can you still play back all previously recorded content or is the old stuff unplayable?

A while back, shortly after RU2 or SP2 (can't recall which) first came out, I ran some sort of Microsoft DRM fix/reset to try to fix the HBO/woman's TV copy protection and a problem with some of our purchased WMV HD DVDs not playing at all (licensing errors on screen when trying to play them).  After that, all of the shows recorded since SP2/RU2 had come out (2 weeks worth) became unwatchable (but all new and older recordings worked as well as all of the WMV HD DVDs).  Right now we have about 500Gb of Recorded TV, almost all since SP2/RU2 came out so if a reset/update did the same thing, my wife, my two children and I would not be happy.

Strangely, each PC in my house that I ran that DRM update on also stopped being able to play back the earlier SP2/RU2 content (the main HTPC is the server, the other 5 are configured to "watch" the exported Recorded TV folder).  At the time I didn't run it on all 6 Media Center PCs so some of them were able to play the early SP2/RU2 content and we watched it on these (I never did update them - other than automatic updates).

Are there any risks running this update these days?  Jessica, do you think it is worth trying it to see if it fixes some of the SD content that won't record?

What does it actually mean to "individualize" your DRM license?

Are there any DRM updates that need to be applied this way (using the link) that are not already installed through Windows Update (our systems are fully updated automatically)?

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions

If you have any DRM'ed content, reseting the DRM will most likely prevent
    you from viewing that content.

Unprotected content will continue to work after a DRM store reset.

    Video Stabilizer reviews

    Electrohome V0761 Digital Video Stabilizer

I picked up one of these units this weekend at London Drugs and thought I should share with folks here that this one does not help with the MCE...

     "Recording Canceled
_________ Cannot be recorded. Restrictions set by the broadcaster and/or originator of the content prohibit recording of this program."

     feature :-)

    Re: Video Stabilizer reviews

The old fashion "Video Stabilizer" for copying dvds and videos isn't what you need.  Specifically look for one that states "CGMS-A" on it.  I googled this one, it's guaranteed, and reasonably priced compared to most of them out there: http://www.xdimax.com/grex/grex.html#TVG

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions

Hello, Austinite.  I have a Happauge PVR-150 and just tried to record an ironic b rate, terrible move and it immediately said it was restricted by the provider.  This was on a Movie Central movie channel.  I tried the next movie central one channel up and it recorded without complaint.  It seems the copywright protection for providers is working too well.  I have no choice but to dump Windows Vista Ultimate and go back to Media Centre 2005 immediately.  I had no problems with MC 2005 (ever).

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions

    OS: Vista Ultimate
    Location: Merritt Island Florida.
    Provider: Brighthouse Networks
    Channel.  AMC
Show: Independance Day <-- kinda ironic

Problem:  Restricted Content message when I am watching the show.  Changing channel and comming back only to restore video for 10 seconds.

    Update!

To add to my own pain, I work in Circuit City’s “Firedog” repair/integration department and have done my fair share of Media Center setups.  Just a few hours ago I got an angry call from my last customer wondering why he could not even watch one of his shows through his Media Center Machine.  I am going out to disconnect his media center machine from his entertainment cabinet and he is going to call the cable company to get their DVR.

    Digg this

    Thanks RandyG,

Sounds like that one might be worth a try.
I have one on order and will report back when it arrives after I get a chance to try it out.
Unfortunately they don't have anywhere on this continent that caries them, so it will be a couple of weeks in shipping before I will be able to see if it in fact liberates my Media Center to the point that makes it is really useful again.

(If they work, maybe Microsoft can make a deal with them and just bundle a unit with each of the Vista Ultimate product sold in Canada Wink [;)] instead of fixing the software)

It's been over 4 months since I first posted about this huge problem with CGMS-A and Canada.  There are other posts considerably older than mine.   If it hasn't been fixed by now, for an issue that really hurts every Canadian user on a DAILY basis, I just wouldn't hold your breath.  MS is intent on plowing forward with MORE drm, not less, no matter what the consequences.

Personally I don't blame MS - they are honouring the DRM flags in the broadcast stream.  The blame goes on the Canadian BDUs such as Rogers, Shaw, BEV, etc and the CRTC that doesn't have the gonads to step in and do anything about the situation.

What MS could do, as has suggested by others, is to ignore CGMS-A if the region is set as Canada.  That could, however, introduce other problems.
