Noob Question: how to get HDTV through Vista?

Ok. I have tried reading about all of this stuff and im not getting it at all. Everyone keeps talking about some tuner cards antenas and other stuff. I have never had HD programing before and was wondering how to get it.

I have an xbox 360 and am getting Vista Ultimate in about 1 week. I read that You can connect them together and stream HD television throught the 360 so it plays on my HDTV(which I have). But I am at a total loss as how to do any of this. I was hoping someone here could clarify for me what exactly I need to buy, what services I need to sgn up for, and how to do all of this in general.

WHat I hope to have in the end it the ability to watch and record HDTV on my 360.

    Thanks,

    Ghost117

Re: Noob Question: how to get HDTV through Vista?

the 360 is connected over your network to you vista pc..  theres a media center section in it if you didn't notice before.

All the tuners/devices to get tv into the 360 go into your vista pc and you set up media center on that machine.

    Offical options:

ATSC Tuner (usually called hdtv tuner) with an antenna.  picks up local broadcasts in your area.  its not like old analog tv with an antenna, its actually rather nice quality.

Digital Cable Tuner (sometimes called OCUR or Cablecard).  You can only get this in a new vista pc that is certified for cablecard.   Its a tuner that acts like a HDTV set top box.  you order cablecard service from the cable company, they put in a decoder card into the special tuner and activate it to get all cable channels including hdtv but not ondemand.

HD Homerun, this is a newer network based tuner device.  has 2 tuners in it, connects to your network and talks with the media center computer.  you connect up your analog cable and any hdtv channels that do not require the decoder card are available.  there is some manually intervention to get it working correctly but worth the time.

ANALOG tuner.  you connect up the HD set top box from your provider and record/watch it in non-hd quality.

    Unoffical:

FIRESTB:  if your HD set top box has a firewire port.  This program works with media center when you have a set top box connected to analog tuner.  like the hd homerun, if its unprotected the recording will happen in full digital hd quality.  if its protected, your analog tuner records it in non-hd quality.   it doesn't do like HD quality.

Can you elabarate on the HD homerun and analog tuner options. Also How does a set top box work? And which option is cheapest. I dont have much money so I would prefer the cheapest posible option.

Re: Noob Question: how to get HDTV through Vista?

Read up on the HD Homerun in this thread:

    http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/160595.aspx

A few things you want to keep in mind while reading that thread are the following.  While this may be over-simplified, I think you'll get the point:

First and foremost, do not get intimidated by the birrage of information you're about to read.  Quite the contrary, you're about to enter the realm of 'early adopters' so the fact that you're taking this step should be very encouraging.

Now, when you read the other thread, you'll see references to QAM all over the place.  Again, in the interest of simplifying this, QAM refers to a digital signal that the cable companies deliver over their wire.  For the most part, that signal includes the local high definition stations completely unscrambled.  If you were to just plug this wire into a QAM capable TV, you woud get your local HD stations without the need for the cable company's decoder box, also known as a Set Top Box (STB).

So, the HD stations are contained in the QAM signal on your cable wire.  You want to get those stations displayed on your shiny new HDTV.  Vista and Media Center do not support QAM tuning natively.  That is to say that there is no way for your Vista or MCE PC to display these local, unscrambled HDTV QAM signals.  This is where HD HomeRun comes in.  This is a small device that needs to be connected in 2 different places in order to work properly:  1 - Your cable wire.  2 - A network which is also connected to your Vista PC  (You can also connect the HD HomeRun directly to your PC's network port, but we're going to assume you have a home network to 'hang' this device off of.)

Still with me?  Good.  I'm not going to get into the particulars about how to set up the HD Homerun here as I don't even own one yet, but the basic theory makes sense to me.  The HD Homerun receives the QAM signal off the cable wire, and is able to 'decode' the unscrambled stations, and then it's ready to deliver this signal to your Vista PC, over the network connection,  in a format Vista is able to understand and display.

On your Vista PC, you need to do some leg work.  Follow the HD HomeRun instructions for setting up Vista's program guide.  Vista does not know about these new HDTV channels it's about to start getting.  You're going to have to tell it what channels they are and how to tune them in.  I know, that sounds like (shudder) programming but it really isn't, so you can relax.  The documentation for HD Homerun looks pretty good, so you should not have any problems going through this step.

Now, just tune in those sweet, crisp, clear HDTV channels.  Please keep in mind, though, that you are only going to get unscrambled QAM (Clear QAM) channels.  These will include your networks, maybe a few others, but do not expect anything that the cable company would charge money for.  Channles like ESPN HD, TNT HD, Discovery HD, InHD, and of course, HBO HD are almost always scrambled.

With the current state of this particular endevor, I would recommend this solution.  It'll cost you soewhere in the neighborhood of $120 or something like that and it's the most reliable with the least cash outlay.  The Firewire solution is very high maintenence, frustrating and flakey.  Although i'm using it as my solution, I would not recommend it to a self proclaimed Noob.  The over the air solution is nice, if you're in a major metro area and can pull the stations in.  I'm just outside of Raleigh NC, and due to the hills around me, I can only get Fox to come in reliably.

OK, so you're ready to go now.  Click on that link up there and go read up on this solution.  First, you might want to pour yourself a glass of wine, as it's a very very long thread already!  Again, do not get intimidated.  Anyone can do this stuff with a little patience, some research and a lot of help!

Very happy convert to SageTV! Finally, watching ESPN-HD in real HD on my HTPC without having to deal with the CableCARD fiasco!

Re: Noob Question: how to get HDTV through Vista?

Thank you very much. I will go read about this now but I have a couple more quesitons.

First, If I have a QAM capable TV and dont want to bother with the whole vista thing, can I just plug a QAM wire into it and get HDTV for free? Also how do I know if my TV is QAM compatible?

The HD Homerun solution sounds resonable so I would like to clarify a few things. If I set up the HD Homerun thing, I will not need to pay monthly to anyone, I will be able to record HDTV with WMC on vista, and I will be bale to stream this HDTV to my HDTV through my xbox 360, right?

If this is all right then what exactly do I need to buy for this solution?

Finally, How good is the over the air reception. I like in a pretty good area and I looked at the sites that say what chanells i will get but im not sure how good this will be. For $40 this solutions seems too good to be true if I actually get good reception and it actually look like HDTV.

I just set up my hd homerun, easy to setup (lil effort needed to set channles/guide) but with in 10-15 mins youll be watching unencrypted channels on your pc. You can record/scedule recordings on hd tv,  i just did the office and scrubs last night with 0 issues. I Dont have a xbox360 so i cant comment on what the extended can/cant do.

Re: Noob Question: how to get HDTV through Vista?

no. and maybe better quality, it depends on how your cable company is putting the channels on the wire.
