many mkv files not recognized by media center in Win7

I have a collection of HD .mkv files.  Used CCCP codecs in Vista 32 bit all worked well.  Now experimenting with Win7 64 bit since new CCCP codec pack allows media center player to play .mkv etc.  Strangely, many of the files do not play.  I get the message "Windows Media Center cannot find the specified file.  Be sure the path is typed correctly.  If it is, the file does not exist at the specified location, of the computer where the file is stored is offline."

These files will play on media player 11.  Anyone out there have an idea as to how to correct the problem?

Yes, it's because the majority of the codecs out there are 32bit only and Media Center is running as a 64bit application. Media player on the other hand has both 32bit and 64bit versions installed in 64bit Win7 and the 32bit one is the default player, which is why everything appears to be playing fine in media player. As far as I'm aware there isn't a 64bit codec that supports MKV's and Media Center doesn't have a 32bit version installed so I ended up installing the 32bit version of Win7 and now everything works fine. Once there are many more 64bit codecs out there I'll consider going back to Win7 64bit.

    Thanks for sharing your experiance.

I was aware that there might still be some issues regarding 64 bit.  I had tried win7 32bit but unfortunately there is no driver support for my ATI theatre 650 capture card listed at ATI.  I tried the vista 32 bit drivers in Win7 32, but no go.

The Vista 64 bit drivers worked on Win7 64bit so I thought I was off to the races.  I do see some advantage to Win7 version of media center over the vista version, but, as it turns out I guess the good old 32 bit vista OS is still the best current solution for a seamless media center experiance....will go back there as soon as my current video job finishes.

I understand hauppauge capture cards are much better supported.  Thinking about a change there when I build my next machine.

Which capture card are you using that works on Win7 32 bit?

    My rig = Q8200, Asus P5QLPRO, 4G1066, Palit/ATI/3600/512 PCIE2 graphics & ATI theatre 650PCI capture

Uninstall all the codec packs and just install the haali splitter.  Google for mkx.y.9 to get the splitter. Its got both 32 & 64 bit versions in it.

Thats all you need if you dont need subtitles or other special features.
