Hi all, my HTPC is now randomly uninstalling and reinstalling my tv tuner. Here's whats changed. I had to format and reinstall Vista to get SP2 to install. SP2 is now installed and Vista is running great. So I setup my tuner and MC again. Everything went great and MC seems much more responsive under SP2. BUT now every few hours it seems Vista uninstalls and rediscovers my tuner. This causes MC to give an error about no tuner found, then another message about setting up a newly discovered tuner! HELP! haha im not sure what is different now, besides SP2, that is causing this to happen! Thanks again!!

EDIT: the tuner is a Hauppauge wintv pvr usb2

The first thing I'd check is your USB settings in your current power plan:  make sure that "USB selective suspend" is disabled.
Also take a look at the power settings for your USB root hubs in Device Manager - uncheck 'allow Windows to turn off this device to save power.'
Change settings as necessary, and reboot for good measure.

Ahh good tips, thanks! Unfortunately both power settings (in control panel and device manager) were set the way you suggested. :-( The computer is also set to never sleep.

you're not using a USB hub are you?

No, plugged directly into the computer.

Just curious, have you checked for Motherboard Bios updates or Driver updates for your Tuner or Motherboard? Some thing here might be the issue. Since power settings are correct in Windows check the BIOS power settings just in case.
not sure if this will help but might be worth looking into.

I haven't checked for MB or BIOS updates. I have looked for newer tuner driver updates but cant seem to find anything dated new than 2007. I didnt think about BIOS power settings but ill check.

How do you know your tuners are uninstalled/reinstalled? Do you see messages in Vista somewhere? Also, is there any possibility of your tuners failing?

I know it is b/c vista makes the "bump-bump" sounds when, like when you plugin or unplug a jump drive. Second, as I said, media center tells me the tuner cannot be found and then says it found a new one... I suppose the tuner could be failing - I have no idea, ha.

Well so far I've had no luck with anything but I have thought of something. Unlike before I formatted, I now have Avira virus protection running on this machine. Do you think it could be interfering? I have disabled it now and am waiting to see what happens. Could Avira be doing scans of USB devices or something that would mess up my tuner?!? Anyone else using Avira?
