Vista Media Center TV Pack 2008 - Thumbnail Issues (No, the other thumbnail issue!)

After skim-reading through all the posts in the lengthy TV Pack 2008 thread I noticed a handful of people are having problems with thumbnails on their dvr-ms recordings but not even one person mentioned having the same issue as I'm having.

My thumbnail problem is that custom JPEG thumbnails cease functioning for any video file you open. In other words, once you open a video file in the Video Library, the JPEG of the same name as the video file is no longer the thumbnail but it goes back to using a movie still as its thumb.

This never happened to me before I installed TV Pack. I'm wondering if it's happening to anyone else...

My media is stored on a read-only network share. If anyone with TV Pack installed can help me out by testing theirs I'd appreciate it very much. (Just place a 200x150px custom .jpg of the same name as a video file on a read-only network share and see if the custom image disappears from the video's thumbnail after you open it. You may need to re-enter the folder the file is stored in whilst browsing Video Library.).

    Thanks in advance,
    SS.

yeah, same issue here ! very unhappy i have around 150 .jpg's for my videos now they are all gone ! Every VMC update breaks something else. The second level video folders now have text instead of just the folder image as before. I also hate this ! Please someone help find a fix.  Thanks

Ok, so it is the update that's causing this. Was hoping it's just me but okay. I guess I gotta go through the painful re-installation of Vista and everything else.

Thanks for the reply, by the way, vanleeuwen.

I have a fix ! it's not the best but if you only use the computer as a media center its fine.

    1. Click on the Start button, then on All Programs, follow by Accessories.
    2. Run Windows Explorer.
    3. In Windows Explorer window, click on Organize button on the menu/shortcut bar.
    4. In the drop down menu, click on Folder and Search Options.
    5. Folder Options dialog window will appear. Click on View tab.
    6. Under the Files and Folders tree heading, check (tick) the checkbox next to Always show icons, never thumbnails option.
    7. Click the OK button.

Now the images will show in VMC but you will not get a thumb view of pictuers etc in windows but VMC will show all files correctly.

Now just need a way to show thumbs in widows for pictures

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately that didn't work for me.

Looks like an uninstallation is inevitable! :-(

Mine was fixed then i broke it trying to test the fix. Now after installing the 2 media center updates (from window update) all my images are back. Hopefully for good this time :)

If your looking to "nuke" your settings and try again, there might be something to try before nuking your whole system.

In the ehome directory there is a big DB file, delete it and media center should be back to first run (first time you run setup). You might have to delete it in Safe mode. If any of the media center programs are using it, it wont let you do anything with it.

Is this the only work around to this issue? I have not upgraded to TV pack yet, however I have lots of nameofmovie.jpg and folder.jpg files for my AVI movies in the Video Library area of VMC.

If TV pack does indeed render these images not used? and a thumbnail is generated instead then that's bad news as far as I am concerned.

I am hitting the same problem too.

It seems that this trick needs help from deleting Explorer thumbnail DB too as in another thread.
