Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

I tried it... and I remain hopeful despite not being able to get it working.

First of all, I have the HP Expresscard tuner (2nd edition that has QAM tuning), which is itself a rebadged Hauppauge HVR-1500. That card is not on the list of supported cards for this QAM driver.

However, I thought there was a decent chance it would work, and at least until the last step of their walkthrough it does. I followed the directions to a T (including installing the latest driver packaged with the QAM utility). I then re-set up the tuner as ATSC only (it's a hybrid, not a combo) and then launched their nifty 10-foot QAM scan utility. It scanned through all my channels and locked 41. At the end of the scan it prompted to restart, and according to the walkthrough that is supposed to "enable Clear QAM mode in the driver".

However that is the end of their instructions. After reboot there were no channels added to my guide (it just had the default ATSC list, none of which worked because an antenna is not connected). I assume the next step is mapping the 41 found QAM channels to ATSC guide listings but I am unaware how to do that--there are no further instructions and I have found no other posts from people who have attempted this.

I'll keep playing around in the TV options... maybe there's something I am missing... and maybe you truly do need a 1250, 1600, or 1800 to be able to do this. But the fact that the scan utility found the QAM channels using this card makes me hopeful that it will work eventually.

If anyone has any info/advice, please post! Thanks.

Got it working with my PVR1600 card.  I followed the walk-through inside the zip found here -

I did have to update the drivers for the 1600 - those were found in the same zip.

I had the same experience as luv2chill with a HVR-1800. I got the driver updated from the folder, and ran the plugin after install / restart. It scanned the channels in a descending order then after I clicked Continue and Reboot, I didn't see anything different.

Could you please details the steps you took to watch the actual qam channels after the scan?

I'm having the exact same experience, scans, reboots, nothing.  I noticed in the walkthrough it says

**** You have to read the Known Problems section to complete the install ****

I'm really curious as to what those known problems are and if it solves this.  Unfortunately, no documentation with Known Issues is included :(

When I go to Program Library i get a choice of HR yes or no if i pick no i get no channels if i pick yes i get 39 channnels but no video or sound with a HVR1600 get all the unencryped channels with Wintv 6  Did it like three times same outcome might try uninstalling driver than doing a clean install of the plug in to see if that makes a difference.

    I got it working!

Here is my setup, a Hauppauge PVR 150 and a Hauppauge HVR 1600.

I installed the plugin as per the included directions, and then when I set up my guide, I had it select the digital cable listings.  I then went into guide settings and maps the listings to the found chanels from the plugin.

And Viola!!!!!  ClearQAM in Vista.  Record it, watch it, love it!

    Hey revrenhex:

I didn't have quite the luck you had with the plugin. Started the plugin a got an error 33 message (I think tht was the number) and tried doing a scan anyway....nothing. That was about a week ago and I haven't looked at it again since.

Question: How do you know if your cable company sends out QAM channels for sure?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!!

I also got the error, when I tired to use the remote, but if you use the mouse, no problems.

And as far as the cable company, I used GBPVR to tune for it, and see whats avalible.  WinTV also tunes clearQAM.  All 3 programs found the same chanels.

Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

I have a question about this, maybe someone here knows the answer... Right now I have an HVR-1800 with both an analog cable connected and an OTA HD antenna hooked up to the digital tuner. This driver (assuming it works) would eliminate the need for the OTA HD antenna in my setup?

My HDTV has the analog CATV plugged in directly and I pick up a lot of HD channels that are not advertised in my basic (22 channel) package. So like PBS HD comes in as channel 254-2, etc. The feed from my  CATV provider is on 24/7, whereas my OTA tuner shows "off the air" about 90% of the time for some unknown reason.

The cable version is higher quality than my OTA signal, so if I could record with it I would jump at the chance.

I dont know about the 1800, but yes.  I have my CATV pluged into the OTA tv port on my 1600, get clearqam chanels from cables HD linup.  I can record them, and play them later.  record them while watching somethign analog, etc etc.
