Does XP SP3 hose your MC2005?

Just installed SP3 tonight.  Everything went great until I used Media Center.  Tuners no longer recognized.  Hardware all still in device manager.  Tried reloading drivers.  Nothing works.  Just broken.

Anyone have better luck or is SP3 to be avoided?

    Thanks...

Not exactly a helpful response...but a response.  Thanks.

Although I generally agree, its was not a big deal to restore my previous backup pre-sp3.  I just found it odd that it basically broke the TV/tuner aspect of media center and wanted to know if others have run into the problem.  I've not had any other updates break media center like this one.

If anyone else has either a positive or negative experience with SP3, post.  Even though delayed from Windows update it will be there soon and I'm sure I won't be the only one asking about it.

Haven't seen any hardware-specific issues with SP3 on MCE2005, however those who did not have their MCE specific updates current prior to installing SP3 have reported other problems. SP3 contains none of the MCE 2005 updates - specifically Update Rollup 2 and the subsequent Cumulative Update from October 2006.

I'm sure the original SP3 availability announcement from Microsoft stated that MCE2005 could only be updated through Windows Update. Unfortunately I think that original announcement has been taken down as a result of SP3 being pulled temporarily.

Personally I think SP3 should have included all the available updates to Media Centre. I can't think of a good reason why it shouldn't, especially if not doing so causes the issues described above and elsewhere.

I think best to wait on installing SP3. There's no rush. Not particularly any new functionality. SP2 will still be supported with security patches for a year.

Re: Does XP SP3 hose your MC2005?

I put it on 3 DVB-T MCE machines last week. 2 were ok.

1 gave critical critical process errors on starting Media Center. I don't agree with Meatloaf at all, 2 out of 3 IS bad. Unistalled sp3 without change. These looked like errors some people got on installing update rollup 2, so I checked out .net and re-registered the components which fixed it. Then re-applied sp3 ok.

see this oldish article from Aaron for details of how to do this.

dancougar - were your symptoms the same as this or different?

I also think it is a shame that the Media Center updates aren't included in sp3. Why not put them in?

Shame on you MS, shame on you, shame on you...

In my case, I'd fire up eshell and go to live TV and it would report that I had no tuners.  I tried doing TV setup again and it still told me I had no tuners.  I uninstalled and reloaded the drivers for both my tuner devices, still no go.  I then used the tuner cleaner and still no go.

Prior to installing SP3 I had every update available on Windows update.

I have the USB Adaptec 3610 and a HDTV Wonder card.

Restoring my image prior to install fixed it all....

    Hi Dan,

I'm sorry to hear that SP3 has essentially broken your system.

I know that you are looking for answers, not smart ass "I told you so's"
but past history tells us that Microsoft puts things out in the product stream
that are not fully functional and waits for user complaints before addressing
    the problems.

That being said, it is always best to wait a while BEFORE applying ANY updates
or service packs as MS often pulls them and then re-releases a "new & improved"
version once they hear from actual end users.

The other thing is... haven't you heard the phrase..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Sorry to be a such a wiseacre, but as one of the only few remaining XP/MCE 2005 users
here on TGB, please let me know if I can help you restore your system to good health!

Re: Does XP SP3 hose your MC2005?

I work in IT...so installing SP3 is as much of an experiment as it is about just being up to date with the latest pack.  I have broken more installations of MC than I can count and always take an image of my boot drive before loading anything.

Its not that I was looking for help getting back to a working state...worst case I would just re-load from scratch.  I really started the topic because a.  SP3 broke my installation and b.  There were no hits for XP SP3 in the community yet and I thought it deserved some discussion for all those that will be loading it in the coming weeks.

Thanks for the input, but you will see that MANY people load updates, especially service packs even though it ain't broke.  I already think starting this thread was worth it....some good feedback already.

BTW...you comment that you are one of the few 2005 users left here.  While that may be true, we are here and we have invested in extenders and tuners and other hardware/software that will not ever work right with Vista.  Sure, I may be able to throw it all away and buy new gear, but to be honest, I'd rather go on a nice vacation with my family then throw money into another platform that our friends at Microsoft will just abandon in the name of progress.  Certainly, driver support for older hardware isn't totally Microsoft's fault, but the extender issue is.

I will try SP3 again once it hits Windows Update and will post my results.  For now...all be warned, if you've downloaded SP3 standalone installer, do not install on MCE 2005 without a restorable backup.  I would NOT trust the SP3 uninstaller.

    Here, Here Dan!,

I totally agree with you about not spending money on Vista which inevitably
leads to abandoning lots of other FULLY FUNCTIONAL hardware we already own.

My head spins when I read posts where someone has spent a seemingly excessive amount
of money on a brand new Vista HTPC, and cannot reap its benefits because Vista is not
    playing nice with their hardware.

I once jokingly borrowed/paraphased a statement made by the late Charlton Heston saying
that "someone will have to pry XP/MCE 2005 from my cold, dead hands before I switch to
    Vista"

Of course, I know that a day WILL eventually come when I will need to bid a fond farewell to
my XP/MCE system and finally start running Vista, but I will wait until this is absolutely necessary
    before doing so.

As for experimentation with new software and the like, I too am always looking for the
"better mousetrap" and like yourself Dan, I have "broken" my share of perfectly fine running system
installations in the name of trying out something new. This is what we do and fortunately, we have
done it enough times to know the simple rule of thumb: backup, backup, backup! A concept that
I am forever trying to pound into the minds of some of my own IT clients.

And actually, the only reason I stated that I was one of the few remaining XP/MCE 2005 users
here on TGB was because it appears that almost all of the current posts pertain exclusively to
Vista related problems and issues and also, in the past few months, I posted several technical
questions and no one has even bothered to help me or for that matter even acknowledged the
    questions at all.

To me, this is rather disheartening as in the past I have offered up help and advise to plenty
of other TGB members who were stuck and were seeking out answers. Once again, this is
    what we do!

It's all good...I learned a long time ago that for the most part, we are simply on our own and
can usually only turn to someone else for help on rare occasions.

    Best,

    -Steve

Good posts!  As another XP/MCE 2005 user, I'm glad I found this.  I'd already decided I won't be moving to VMC anytime soon!  I also plan to wait awhile now before installing SP3.
