You are supposed to configure the TV power and volume buttons to learn your TV functions so it will work with your TV volume.  At least that is how it seems to me

Check the manual for the remote.  Volume control is done through your external device (TV, AVR, etc).

I would like to use the media center remote to control my volume, would that be possible? just like when you are on a pc and the volume bar moves left or right on the top right corner

No, you can't do this on the Extenders.  The external source must control the volume.

I found it in the menus on the extender.  Cant remember where, but it has a step by step process.  did not get it to work though....:)

Using the Remote Control Learning Functionality

The TV, VOL +, and VOL – buttons on the remote control for Media Center PC can

“learn” IR commands from other remote controls. This feature lets you use the TV

button to turn on your TV and the VOL + and VOL - buttons to adjust the volume on your

TV or another device, such as an audio receiver.

    Notes

By default, the VOL + and VOL - buttons on the remote control for Media Center PC

control the system volume on your computer, and the TV button has no command

assigned to it until it “learns” one.

Do not perform this procedure in bright natural or artificial light.

To program buttons on the remote control by using the learning feature

1 Place the remote control for Media Center PC head to head (2 to 3 inches apart)

with the remote control from which it is learning.

2 On the remote control for Media Center PC, press and hold the DVD MENU and OK

buttons at the same time until the remote control lights turn off

    (2 seconds).

The remote is now in learning setup mode.

3 On the remote control for Media Center PC, press and release the TV,

VOL +, or VOL – button, depending on which command you want it to learn.

The remote control for Media Center PC lights blink once to confirm the selection.

4 On the remote control that is teaching the command, press and hold the button that

you want the corresponding button on the remote control for Media Center PC to

    learn.

The remote control for Media Center PC lights blink twice to confirm the selection.

If the remote did not learn the command, the lights blink quickly four times. To try

again, repeat steps 1 through 4.

5 Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the other buttons that can learn commands.

To restore the default remote control settings

1 Press and hold the DVD MENU button and LEFT navigation button at the same time

until the remote control for Media Center PC lights turn off.

    2 Press the OK button.

The remote control for Media Center PC lights blink twice to confirm that the buttons

have been reset. The TV button will have no command assigned to it and the VOL +

and VOL – buttons will adjust the Media Center PC system volume.

If the default settings were not restored, the lights blink quickly four times. To try

again, repeat steps 1 and 2.

    Re: change volume on extenders

The Linksys remote is slightly different, but it's explained in the manual. But the DMA2100 remote really stinks, so I am using an extra Microsoft remote that I had laying aroung. The Linksys buttons are very small, not backlit, and are laid out differently than the MS unit. The icons are so small that I can't even read some of them.

That's weird though.  I've used the extenders v1 for MCE2005 and I could change the volume on them just fine.

Overall I was much happier with the v1 extenders than the new ones. The DMA2100 just is horribly slow (until you disable menu animation), it misses one of the zoom options (the best one in my opinion; stretching a 4:3 picture to a 'normal' looking 19:9 ratio).  I've also seen with component hookups the zoom option not working at all.  It will cycle through the different ratios but the picture on my tv won't change???

The DivX/Xvid implementation seems to be implemented in a way where the Media Server transcodes these files on the fly to a format supported by the extender.  It's not like the extender itself supports DivX/Xvid.

No such feature happens with any Extender.

Then why the delay in starting a divx video file? And why can I not skip ahead?

The reason that you can't control the volume on the extender is that the audio outs are RCA white/red cables.... these analog signal CAN NOT be controlled by an XBOX360 connector as far as I understand.  If you had an HDMI connection or somehow had a digital audio signal you would be able to control the volume...

    Re: change volume on extenders

The Linksys DMA2100 that I have would not allow me to control volume over HDMI.  I had to program the remote control with my TV's power, volume up, volume down and mute.  The extender's remote does nothing without programming it to the TV.

The only part that stinks is that I decided to switch to a MS remote since it has backlighting, but I can't get the mute to control my TV's mute (MS remote manual says only power, volume up, volume down are supported) .

Correct.  I've used v1 Extenders as well (matter of fact, I'm still running 2 old-school Xboxen with the Xbox MCX kit), and they do, in fact, have a volume control (for both optical or analog output.)
For v2, however, no.  No volume control.  But, for connection to an A/V system (or, to anything, for that matter), 'tis still best to leave the line-outs at 100%, and regulate the sound level with the amp.  Amps (receiver, amplifier, or a TV's sound board) are designed to take signal at x level.  Cut that level, and you start to introduce noise (or, more precisely, you start to hear 'normal' noise over the actual sound.)
