Note that this activity may be illegal where you live but I have heard that many folks use DVD-Shrink.

Theres no way this is illegal as long as you own the DVD.  If it is considered illegal, then the government is really messed up and needs to have their jobs taken away.

I have used anydvd to rip them to my hard drive. Then I use mymovies to catalogue them. There is a thread in here somewhere on how to do that. There is probably an easier way but this works for me.

I use DVD shrink and My Movies to catalog.

DVD Shrink strips the DVD of its copy protection allowing you to rip the disk. It also allows you to remove un-used soundtracks(foreign languages), trailers, special features and compress the main movie very well.  All these features help save space, by only recording whats important, as some double-layered disks can reach upto 8-9 gigs.

    I use DVDFab.

I usually rip the dvds before I watch them. So far I have about 100 dvds on a 750gb firewire drive (be starting on my second drive soon).

if you live in the states it is illegal if the dvd is "protected" with css.

dvdshrink does not remove css directly, it requires a program like dvd decryptor to do the decss step.

What Title and Section of the USC says that?

    USC?

The DCMA makes it illegal to circumvent encrypted access controls on copyrighted content.

    USC?

The United States Code is the codification by subject matter of the general and permanent laws of the United States. It is divided by broad subjects into 50 titles and published by the Office of the Law Revision Counsel of the U.S. House of Representatives.

We don't need talk about the legality of the subject.  Options have been presented and 5 seconds of search The Green Button will present you will thousands of members doing the same.

Searching Google will also provide you with information about "ripping" DVD's.

Well in the UK its not illegal to copy DVD's for personal use and for backup purposes.

I use DVDshrink which will rip most DVD's ... although more and more have additional CSS encryption and some are even muddling up the DVD structure so even DVD Decrypter will not work.

For those i use anydvd to remove all the encryption and DVD Shrink to Rip to disk.

Then i use manage collection and mymovies plugin for MCE.

So far i have ripped over 100

I think the lack of general knowledge about the DCMA's limitation of fair use makes it worth noting.  The more people who are aware of the erosion of consumer rights, the more likely it is that we can recoup some of those rights.

It's also important that everyone in the states who decides that civil disobedience is the path they want to take, should do so with full knowledge that what they are choosing is not currently legal.

I agree with that.   its DMCA in case anyone is trying to look itup.  I always mess up it also.   Also there was provisions that later went into effect after research, whoever handles copyright stuff recently defined some other pieces of the law.  things like educational use of copyrights and such so just looking up the dmca will not give you all the rules.

Correct, the DMCA is just a list of ammendments to Title 17 of the USC.

PS. For the actual DMCA text search for: 105th Congress bill H.R.2281
