Vista RTM & Xbox 360 black screen after 10 minutes

I have just installed Vista RTM which is working great.  I can connect my 360 as an extender and this also works fine except for one little issue.

After 10 minutes of watching recorded TV the screen goes black and you need to press a button on the remote to "wake" the 360 up again.  I have checked and the screen saver functionality in the dashboard is turned off.  Any idea?

I have updated the Xbox software and this has had no effect.  Someone else must have experienced this...

I had the exact same problem.  It was a video card driver that was causing it for me.  I even had the same issue on beta2, I was using the Vista drivers since the ATI drivers were causing stuttering issues with HDTV channels.   I use an ATI 9800Pro and I'm pretty sure the windows drivers causes this.  I installed the latest drivers from ATI and it fixed the problem.  You might want to give that a shot!

I have not had this problem and I use two xbox 360 extenders with Vista 64 RTM. I have however had a couple of freezes and the only way to clear them was to exit media center on the xbox and restart it. These seem to be random and no set time. They are so far in between that I am not really concerned.

I'm not sure whether it is related to the graphics driver or not.  I have an ATI card but HTPC Manic has an nVidia...

I have however found a solution which may work for other people.  Go into the Xbox dashboard console settings and turn the screensaver ON.  For some strange reason this has fixed the problem for me!

    Thanks for the help.

Something else you might look at is the power options on your Vista PC.  Click the advanced button and go through the drop down tabs, there's one that disables the PC going into standby (screen, disks and power) when you are streaming.  This might help.

I have this same problem. I have tried to switch the screen saver setting on the 360 both ways, but it makes no difference. This is defiantly some sort of video problem, as the sound still plays while the screen goes black.

OK, this problem came back a couple of days ago for no apparent reason but this time I think I've fixed it properly!

The 360 connects to the Vista PC via a windows login that is automatically created on that PC.  I have fixed the problem by disabling the screen saver for this user but I had to change some registry settings to do it.  Only proceed if you know what you are doing!

1.) Turn on the 360 and load up the Media Center Extender frontend.
2.) Bring up a command prompt window on the PC and run the regedit utility.
3.) Browse to the registry location:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist

4.) Make note of the registry user key associated to the Media Center user (probably Mcx1 although I assume there maybe an Mcx2 etc. if you have more that one extender).  See this screenshot.
5.) Browse to the registry location:

    HKEY_USERS\[registry user key from step 4]\Control Panel\Desktop

6.) Change the ScreenSaveActive key to 0 by double clicking it.  See this screenshot.

I'm having the same problem.  It seems to go black at random times.  I tried the Xbox360 screen saver and I tried the Reg hack and no luck.  I have not tried the new drivers from ATI.  They don't have Vista Media Center drivers, just regular Vista.  Any other ideas??

If you have ATI hardware, check out the latest drivers released today.

Thanks, I'll try that.  Didn't see that they released new drivers.  I'll post back if they do or do not work.

I doubt we'll see anymore Media Center specific video drivers since it's built into the Vista sku now, try out the latest Vista drivers and see what that does for ya.

I got sick of all the ATI driver issues I've been having so I moved all my machines over to Nvidia and haven't had any video issues since.
