    Turn off DVD subtitles

i don't know if this is a default feature, but subtitles are automatically enabled whenever I play a DVD movie and what's worst is I can't turn them off!!! I went to DVD settings and set Subtitle to "None" and set Closed Cpation display to "off" and in the options/language menu of the DVD menu I set subtitles to off despite all this, I still get subtitles.

Any idea how to turn off subtitles with DVDs???

    I'm running MCE 2005 (rollup 2, october 2006)

    TIA

Do a CTRL-U on the keyboard or use a universal remote control like the Harmony or Universal Remote after making it "learn" the CTRL-U shortcut from an MCE compatible IR keyboard.

CTRL-U switches between all available subtitle languages on a DVD including "No Subtitle"

Ctrl+U does nothing. I'm still getting the subtitles.

    Any other ideas???

No I still haven't found a fix for this.

I uninstalled all DivX/Xvid/MP4/MKV-ish codecs and uninstalled both PowerDVD and WinDVD which basically left me with a virgin video system and still I can't get rid of the subtitles! I even installed Windows Media Player 11 (I had WMP 10 before) but that didn't fix it.

this is very weird because when I boot (it's a dual-boot machine) into Vista Media Center there's no subtitle troubles, I can turn them on and off without any problems

does anyone have the slightest clue as to why this is happening and how to resolve it???

any kind of help would be greatly appreciated

    Re: Turn off DVD subtitles

I finally resolved this issue (which is a lil' too late since I switched to Vista Media Center already)... i uninstalled all DVD playback software (PowerDVD, WinDVD, TheaterTek, etc.) and all video codecs (divx, xvid, mp4, etc.) and installed the latest version of Nvidia Decoder and the subtitles went away.

Afterwards when I re-installed my video codecs I carefully made sure not to install any MPEG2 related codecs or codecs I wasn't too sure about.

I believe the problem was with the ArcSoft DVD decoder I had installed the whole time (which I believe is also built-in to Windows or something like that). I think it was the DVD decoder used whether PowerDVD or WinDVD was installed or not. Weird.

    Re: Turn off DVD subtitles

I recently had the same issues with subtitles only on dvd"s played through Media Center.  I was able to watch dvd's without subtitles using other media players though.  I finally used a program I had previously installed that would allow me to choose what video decoder to use.  The program is Microsoft windows xp video decoder checkup utility, this will allow you to choose a preferred video decoder to use that is compatible with MCE.  Mine was set to ArcSoft and a quick change back to my NVIDIA video decoder fixed it right away.  Here is the link to the program, or you can search the long name mentioned above.

Hope this helps anyone else who has this same problem.  By the way I am running XP MCE 2002 SP2.

Thank you for this tip!  It helped.  Would you know how I "lock" it so that I wouldn't have to hit "Ctrl U" each time?  Where could the root of this issue exist?
