    HELP - EPG Not Updating

The MCE Machine I have here doesn't update his EPG..

I've tried several things w/o finding a solution..

I tried deleting the "OLD" EPG Files...

    Forcing Updates..

    Restoring a Ghost image..

    Reconfiguring the tv part..

    Nothing works..

Everytime the small Icon in the systembar starts to connect it keeps at 0%..

it even goes as far as creating a temp directory in the epg map.. But that's it...

Internet access correctly configured.. (BITS is active).. Downloading of updates goes on in the background...

    Thats it..

    Anyone...??

    Txxx

RE: HELP - EPG Not Updating

    Possible things to try:

Reconfigure guide settings (e.g. re-enter postal code).

Check any logs in the same folders as the EPG database for errors.

Check the even log for errors.

    Cheers,
    Andy

Tried it all (even the postcode).. as soon as it connects to start downloading the EPG..

    It stays at 0 %

About the logs... what do I need to look for ??

RE: HELP - EPG Not Updating

I also am having trouble getting  updates. Everything has been working fine for years, but then it looks like the last good update was November 6. I noticed today because there were no more listings available.

I kept a backup of my old EPG, but deleted it where MCE normally looks for it, and still have exactly the same problem. I also tried downloading manually, entering a new postal code, and can never download. Each error says to reconfigure the Internet connection, but I tried that and tested it each time, and the system reports success on the test!

The exact error messages I am getting are:

When I try to download guide information manually: "Guide information could not be downloaded. You need to set up your Internet connection to work with Media Center. Select Set up Internet Connection in Settings."

When I try to Reseet the Guide Lineup, it seems to work find up to the "Downloading Provider Information" section. Then it says, "We were unable to locate any Program Guide information for the following reason: Download error. The download will be attempted later."

I even found a Microsoft support article suggesting that you may have problems if you clock is set too far off, but my clock is set fine.

    Any thoughts? Anyone?

RE: HELP - EPG Not Updating

Do you have any unusual country settings?  E.g. are you set for downloading a guide in one country, but have your location settings set to US so you can see the US online spotlight?

Also, check the event log and see what the guide download error is in there - it's usually more descriptive than the error in the message.

    Cheers

RE: HELP - EPG Not Updating

    Nope.. No Unusual Settings..

I noticed that the machine wasn't fully updated, so I did that.. Incl Rollup 2

There's nothing left to upgrade (at the moment)

No change.. Still stays at 0% when downloading..

So I started sniffing around.. and found a file called DefaultDomain-SYSTEM.xml (somewhere in the epg directory..) its around 480 kb

I think it's a log file..?? And goes from bottom to top.. (I noticed quite a few errors in there)

    Here's what happened today

RE: HELP - EPG Not Updating

Have a look at the Media Center registry entries.  There is an entry under the EPG section that gives the URL of the EPG service. Copy that and paste it in to the address box in Internet Explorer, press Go and see what error you get.

    Cheers,
    Andy

RE: HELP - EPG Not Updating

I posted earlier that I was having the same problem, and I figured it out. Now the download is working!

If you have Norton Internet Security 2006 installed, give this a try. It worked for me.

I had earlier checked that the firewall was not blocking the download. I had checked the NIS logs, and saw no warnings or blocks. I found that I was getting error #14 when trying to download, according to the MCE error log. That has to do with https being blocked. I have had no problem with most websites going to https, but just for kicks I turned off the NIS 2006 Privacy Service. This blocks pop-ups and https under some settings. As soon as it was off, I could request a download with no problem.

Oddly, Privacy Service was already set up to ALLOW https, so I do not know what the problem was. Also, I have been able to turn it back on again and the guide download still works.

Symantec does not have any record of this problem on their NIS 2006 support site, but I figured I would share it here in case anyone is seeing the same problem.

Good luck getting yours to work!

RE: HELP - EPG Not Updating

    Txx For The info..

But we keep this machine free of extra software for demo purpose

So It's uptodate on windows & fixes - For protection it's all microsoft .. xcept antivirus which is AVG FREE..

    The Problem was solved btw..

    BY ITSELF !!!

Here's what I posted on MS OEM newsgroups.. (I Just copied and pasted it)

You seriously have to check into this..

Out of the blue the machine was updated during the night.. So I assume it
    was on the server side..

The big problem was that there was never any information about this..

The error claimed that MY connection was bad .. (Which wasn't) & there were
no error messages what so ever through the Mediacenter Shell..

I personally think this is a HIGH priority for a device like this..

There is no way you (or who does the EPG updating) can claim 100% uptime..
That's not a problem in itself..

BUT when mediacenter gives NO error messages whatsoever and after long
searching claims that the error is on the userside (which apparently was
    not)

That to me is a serious FLAW in the design...

Feel free to contact me for more info..

    Txx
