Re: RE: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

    Hi

I used your method i the following post http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/19295.aspx from cactus to install media center on 2003 server. Everything went well, although i cant get the Update rollup 2 to install. Windows flashes an error saying "The version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install".

I tried to use the Bart PE CD and change the SystemPrefix but i get the Access_violation error. Then i have tried to rebuild the eshell.exe file, but i dont have the corret eshell.res file, and i cant seem to figure out if that even would allow me to install Rollup 2.

I hope you can help med with the problem, og maybe you somebody that someway has solved the issue.

Re: RE: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

From the previous posts i understand that either you have to change the SystemPrefix in the windows registry or by modifying the ehshell.exe.

The first option is only possible if your windows 2003 server version isnt a VLK. Mine is not but it still doesnt work.

For the second option you need a special ehshell.res file, which i dont know where to get.

I hope some of the bright people that came up with the method is replying soon :-)

RE: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

just came across this post, before i test this out i have a couple of questions

    1. once MCE is on Server2003 will it work with the xbox 360 as a extender..(ex. that same functions- TV tuner, radio, etc as if i was just using MCE 2005)

    2. Windows Home Server (WHS) was released to the pubic (beta2) i believe its based on Server 2003?
Did anyone try this yet on WHS? If i have some free time i will see if this works

Re: RE: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

    CaMs,

    To answer your questions:

    1. Yes the Xbox 360 will work as an extender. (provided your TV card drivers work on 2003) however some people have reported problems with getting all the buttons on the remote to work.

    2. WHS supports the xbox 360 natively as it has the universal plug and play stack, which allows use on Windows Media Connect. See the following site for more infor http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/whs_preview.asp

    Cheers

Re: RE: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

Anytime I attempt to shut down or reboot my 2003 Server w/MCE 2005 installed, it ALWAYS tells me there are Extenders connected when I don't own a single extender.  Am I the only one with this problem?  Is there a fix for this?

About installing Vista MCE on 2003... that might not be as impossible as it seems.  I wanted Vista's Windows Sidebar on my 2003 machine and found this shell extension app called VAIO that makes it possible.
    http://www.fromvistatoxp.com/

Interestingly enough, it can patch and modify several Vista EXE files to run on XP or 2003.  Yes, it did let me run Sidebar on 2003 also!

Re: RE: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

t's because ehtray is catching the shutdown signal, if you kill it, it won't happen, however each time ehshell runs, it seems to be restarted.  I'm pretty sure it's because there's always an rdp session active in Server 2003 if you have it enabled, but unsure in reality.

Re: RE: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

Ah, I see.  Thanks thetoad, good to know it's not just me.
I run a shutdown/reboot script anyway because I run Exchange and it reduces shutdown/reboot to 5-mins from 15-20 so it'll be easy enough to add ehtray to the list of services to kill.

Could you send the file ehshell.zip to me please?  Or direct me to a location when it's uploaded?  My email is miamisplash01@yahoo.com

    Thanks!

Re: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

    Hello,

I realy like the idea to get mce2005 to work on a SBS2003 SP2. It worked on a SBS2003 SP1 but now it doesn't work on my new build fileserver with SBS2003 SP2 because I don't know hou to disable WFP on this new system.
Can somebody tell me how too do this?

    Thank,
    Edwin.

I cannot seem to find the ehshell.res file anywhere for my Window 2003 SP2 VLK. I am trying to install Update Rollup 2. Can someone point me in the right direction on where to find this.

Re: RE: Media Center 2005 on a Windows 2003 Server

It seems that you guys have solved the problem with ehrecvr, the media center receiver service? Mine still always throws 'class not registered' - can anyone tell me how to fix this? I must admit, however, I used a slightly different method, as prescribed by MSFN. The other thing is, how can you automate the killing of ehtray? It seems that the script isn't run early enough if you use gpedit, and the error still comes up. Any help much appreciated, thanks!
