Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

I have been noticing this issue. I purchased a XPS 420 with 2 DCTs in August. I was not seeing a problem in the beginning but a few weeks ago, I started seeing an issue where the broadcast flag would prohibit a recording (event ID 8), it affected the live TV stream and no show could be watched or recorded until the VMC was rebooted. After reviewing the event logs, it seems that the NBC show "The Big Bang Theory" which records at 8pm on Monday in my area is the culprit. Once the failure happens in the midst of recording that show, nothing else can be watched or recorded from either cable tuner until the system is rebooted. If I go to live tv, i get a green/black pixelated screen. The reboot seems to help and the issue goes away until the following Monday. If MS wants to interpret the broadcast "copy never" flag and not record the show, then that's fine but why hose my tuners so nothing will record on any channel? Does the above update resolve this issue?

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

    TimSchreck-MS:

Today we released 2 udpates that expand the original solution released in June.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955519 applies to all Windows Vista Media Center versions.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956147 applies to systems with the Windows Media Center TVPack.

The solution in these updates apply to systems either with or without set-top boxes and address the scenario with incorrect or improper CGMS-A broadcasts.

These solutions do not apply to systems with digital cable tuners.  For digital cable tuners, the firmware of the tuner provides content protection.

While we know CGMS-A has been one of the reasons behind content protection errors on Media Center, we continue to investigate reports where these updates have not resolved the issue.

Tim, thank you for seeing this through and a thank you to whoever worked on the code.

I'll install the update and report back on how well the solution works for us.

Do these patches potentially fix the parental control issue also (where enabling DVD parental controls with Canadian Media Center PCs causes restricted content messages to flash on the screen during Recorded TV playback)?

Thanks, Tim! This fix is incredibly late, but still much appreciated.

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

I'm just now having the problem in MCE 2005 in the last month or so.  Why would it just start all of a sudden?  Pretty annoying to say the least.  Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon!!!!

    TimSchreck-MS:
It's still a bit too early in the release process to have a solid date for the Windows XP Media Center 2005 update.  Unless something drastic shows up in testing, I think it's safe to say that this should be available in weeks rather than months.

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

Thanks for the work on this. I'm running 2005 however.

Any solid plans for the 2005 update?

Mine has been working fine up until today...

My machine pulled down 6 or 7 new updates earlier and now I can't record.

I'm going to try to revert back and hope for the best.

I downloaded both and niether apply to my system, how do you know if these will work on your WMC version currently installed?

    Mark -

Would these have installed via auto-update?  Are they listed under Installed Updates?

    ***..

its says "The update does not apply to your system"

    .. this is not true.

I am so tired of having to deal with stupid ass who just don't give a *** about really solving the problem.. they can't even test it before sending it.

Could you just disable that fucking *** "cgms-a" control.. thats is not to be used here in canada ?

    It is said that :

These solutions do not apply to systems with digital cable tuners.  For digital cable tuners, the firmware of the tuner provides content protection.

How is it possible for other programs (sage tv, etc) to record from that same box then  ?

We can see who really  care about their customers.

Please just get rid of that cgms-a that does not apply here in Canada. Your program is violating our rights to records program that we should be able to listen to, as advertised.

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

Just touching base about an update for MCE 2005 - any news?

Don't know if I have exactly the same problem as described here...

Within the last week my recordings of regular network shows, from analog cable, have started to be "partially" copy-protected.  The properties of the files indicate no protection, but if I attempt to convert or burn a DVD to watch I get a copy protected message.  Sometimes it is early in the process and other times the message doesn't occur until the process is almost done.  Other forums talk about commercials that are protected occurring during unprotected programs.  The programs seem to be recorded correctly, I just can't move them to a DVD to watch on a TV as I have for the last 2 years.

No system changes or updates between working (i.e. no protection) one day and not working (protected) the next.  It was the day after the election...

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.  I have scoured the web for two days and this thread is the most recent that addresses something like my problem.

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

Thank you for the update Tim,

We have had and enjoyed our MC 2005 for years.  It was only during the last two months that we get this intermittent "Restricted Content" in the middle of a program, now with increasing regularity.  It we use "Up Channel" to go to the next Dish Network channel and then immediately return with "Down Channel", the "RC" screen clears and the program continues.  It appears to be a random, incorrect flag setting. This happens intermittently within a recording to where we can no longer rely on MC to record desired programming.  Once a program goes RC, it does not clear itself, unless you switch off channel and then back.  None of this is "Premium" stuff.  It happens on TV Land as well as local stations for gosh sakes.  I have not seen it on over the air digital broadcasts however.  Please provide update when you can.  This is STILL coming for MC 2005, right?  My wife is about ready to throw the MC out into the yard. Thanks! Steve

We are on track with the release of this update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.  We are targeting 11/25 and I will post information on its availability.  I do want to caution that this date may change for a number of reasons.

Re: Recording canceled/stopped due to Copyright restrictions (Part 2)

Well, that's confusing.  Chris's blog is dated today, the patch is dated today, but the description of the patch on MS is:

"Install this update to resolve an issue in which a Windows Media Center configuration that uses an analog TV broadcast without a set-top box, displays a protected content message when recording television shows."

... which is the OLD patch which did nobody any good, since the CGMS-A stuff pretty much exclusively hit MCE customers with cable boxes on the digital channels.

The "NEW" patch is supposed to address cable box customers, like the Vista patch.

Not sure what's going on here

The newest files in this patch are dated 10/10/2008.   Even more confusing.

The patch appears newer than the "described" (no set-top box) patch which was from around January I think.

Did Tim have the patch for MCE2005 a month early, and forgot to tell us?  With a wrong description just to be confusing?
