Re: New Video Browser Plugin
MarkSewell:
I love the idea behind this tool and it does exactly what I have wanted for some time. However before taking the plunge can someone confirm the following;
1. Do you have to have your movies / recordings all in individual folders for this to work?
Currently I have one single folder with around 175 movies I've converted to AVI. I don't really want to split these up as it will be way too time consuming :-)
2. If it will work like this, through meta data (I will use metabable) will it be able to setup the genre data etc?
3. Looks good but a transparent theme / more VMC like UI would be a good option too.
Thanks
Mark
1. yes you would need them in seperate folders for the metadata to work, and possibly for the folder images to display correctly too, check my earlier posting which shows how to create a batch file for creating folders based on filenames (assuming all your video files have the correct movie name).
2. im not too sure about genre data as i havent looked into this yet, maybe somebody else can answer, but i am using metababel instead of mymovies/ruby script and it works really well correctly displaying director, actors, and description, runtime and year, make sure you grab the latest version of metababel (0.0004 preview 2)
3. i concur :-).

@ paulaeccleston; that screen looks quite nice! Where did you source your themes from?

Re: New Video Browser Plugin
the theme im currently using was taken from mediacenterfx website, signup and you can download themes from their site, you need their little app to install the theme, but to be honest all the app does is sorts out permissions, runs icacls, creates the ehres.dll and stuffs it in c:\windows\ehome\ so its easy enough to grab the dll after youve applied the theme and then ditch the app :-), not exactly sure legally where i stand with all this, but hey its only a patched dll eh. i have downloaded around 6 themes, and copied the patched ehres.dll files out and also print screened each theme so i know what they look like, if you want i can rar the lot up and rapidshare it?.

Yes, you have to have tour movies in different folders, but it'll we way worth it. As you can read in this thread there are tools that will do the hard work for you.
MarkSewell:2. If it will work like this, through meta data (I will use metabable) will it be able to setup the genre data etc?
Guess I can answer this as the author of MetaBabel :-) MetaBabel can be used with genres, but I have found it to be a little genre-rich, let me explain: MetaBabel scrapes DVDempire and DVDempire uses a lot of different genres. Right now I thingk I have over 50. That doesn't make it much easier when each genre have one or three movies in it. The good thing though is that version 0.5 of MetaBabel is very near release. In this version you will have the ability to set up a genre positiv list. Then only genres that are in your positiv list will be included.
MarkSewell:

Personel opinion, but I'm with you Sam could spice it out a bit. But I guess he'll have the functionality in place first.

Re: New Video Browser Plugin
Hi,
Thanks for this it is brilliant, using with metababel is really good. I have managed to get the ruby stuff working by running it in cmd prompt. One feature that I cant seem to figure out how to use is Fixnames, could someone please type a full string that I should use in cmd prompt to get this to work?
Many Thanks
Danny

Re: New Video Browser Plugin
Hey KingManon, great info and sounds like it will do exactly what I want.
I guess I'll only use this for my TV shows, as i've filed them away in a logical folder structure where as my movies are centralised and I just use the DVD library or the video library (for movies i've copied locally and got around to compressing to .avi).
What would meet all my needs is if there was a way of getting meta data for a large folder of files. It's a shame only dvr-ms has this kind of native meta-data.

Re: New Video Browser Plugin
To bad there isn't much posting in this treath. But i guess that's because this plug-in just does what it is supposed to do, and it works great.
However, after using for some weeks now i found that when after you watch a video and you return to the list menu, you can no longer use the quick navigation by using the number keys, nor can you select the <by genre> category.
Also the auto playlist (which is a great feature!) doesn't always work right. For example i got two files in a folder: Crash.2004.UNRATED.DC.DVDRip.XviD-ESPiSE.CD1.avi and Crash.2004.UNRATED.DC.DVDRip.XviD-ESPiSE.CD2.avi, but the CD2 file is played first. Maybe you can fix this in a future release.
Keep up the good work!

Re: New Video Browser Plugin
Hi DyStic, Thanks for reporting this. I'm having trouble reproducing the missing genre and missing quick nav bug. Can anyone else confirm this bug? I need to be able to reproduce it to fix it.
The out of order playlist is an easy fix. I think it could play up if you are serving your files from a linux box, cause I noticed smb acts a bit differently over linux. (I also noticed the sort by date behaves a bit oddly when serving files from linux)
Cheers Sam

Re: New Video Browser Plugin
by any chance have you had time to look at ignoring the "The" at the beginning of some movies.

Well it doens't happen all the time, i'll try to see if i can find a pattern to reproduce it and report back. sambo99: The out of order playlist is an easy fix. Yeah the sort by date doesn't really work out for me either, but i think that's more because of how linux acts. Don't know if you mean the same thing; I guess when using 'sort by date' in Video Browser it uses the 'created' date from the folders to sort, however in linux (or at least on my NAS) when i put a new file or change a file in a folder, this folder gets a new create date (instead of only changing the 'modified' date for the folder as it works in windows). So after i change something in an old folder it appears unfortunately back on top. But apparently thats more a strange behavior of my NAS.

Re: New Video Browser Plugin
hi sam i have been running your cool little app for a while now and have a feature request:-
feature request would it be possible to double click the sort types at the top of the screen in order to flip the order displayed, so for instance clicking on the <by name> field once displays it in the normal alphabetical order, but if you click again it flips the order, just would be a nice little touch i think, this could be done for all sort types i.e. length genre etc.
bug #1 i dont know if anybody else has noticed this but the width of the selector seems to shuffle around a little bit when scrolling up and down, also if you have 6 movies displayed in the list then if your scroll to the bottom or go to the top the whole list moves a bit, its a small thing but a bit annoying.
bug#2 im still getting issues with metadata not showing for my first movie in the list, if i select the second movie in the list and then go back to the first movie again then metadata is displayed, its a bit strange though as it only happens on two folders, the movies it does it with are "about a boy" and "2 fast 2 furious" i dont know if this bug is movie title related?.
i hope you keep up development of this app, as i think its a great replacement for mymovies.
paul.

Hmm on my linux box I have yet to find anything that plays out of order, will see if I can reproduce the bug when I have some time later.
As for the sort by date, seems to work fine, the only thing I've noticed is if someone uses the regular video browser in MCE then a thumbs file is created with a new date and that movie jumps to the top.

I think you mean the same thing as i described; DyStiC: Yeah the sort by

Makes the 'sort by date' kinda unusable on my box, too bad. An option would be to look at the create date of the actual media files in the folder, but i don't know of that is possible to implement.
